- I’m starting to harvest some of my Southern Cowpeas - Zipper Cream Peas and Black Eyed Peas. I will continue harvesting the peas over the next couple of weeks and then will cut down the pea plants to clear space for my fall crops. After my harvest, I show how you can tell when the peas are ready to be picked fresh or dried.
These were planted from seed the last weekend in June, as a cover crop for the summer. It is now the first weekend in September and the first flush of peas are ready for harvest.

Thank you! This is my first time growing peas and I picked a few pods but it was way too soon. Some of us noobs really have no idea what we're doing and need all the help we can get.

Hi! Sorry you weren’t able to hear me well. Thank you for letting me know. I hope there isn’t a problem with my upload. I am able to hear the audio good on my phone and also could hear it on my computer at work, so I’m not sure what the problem could be. There are 2 places where you can adjust the volume - one is on your phone/computer and the other is in the CZcams player itself. Did you check the volume on both?

I have planted cow peas and I cannot wait to harvest them. My plants are still small with green pods
Thanks for the information. I've got White Acre Peas growing now, and later today will be planting 3 rows each of Zipper Cream and Mississippi Purple Hull. I'm trying to determine which is best for our purposes. I'm in Volusia County, and wondering what part of the state you are in. Also, I just ordered an electric sheller after realizing that if I'm going to be growing and eating field peas, then hand shelling may not be the best choice even though I remember shelling peas on the front porch as being quite the social event.
Awesome! I'd like to get an electric sheller too. I do usually enlist help from the family to do the shelling and it is definitely better as a social event :). I'm in Northwest Hillsborough county.
My zippers have just taken over and the rows have all grown together. I’m about to have an unexpected hernia surgery and the peas are just starting to bloom . Can I just let the vines grow all they will and let them dry on the plant and get them later all at once . Will they be good to eat dried like other peas and beans
Yes they should be ok to dry on the vine for awhile. I have harvested mine dried before, but if they go too long and it gets rainy they can start to get moldy and then they won’t be good. Try not to leave them too long if you can help it, but you can only do what you can do. Maybe some friends or family would come harvest them for you. My nephews used to think it was fun to help me harvest them. I hope you have a quick recovery from your surgery! My Mom just went through that a couple of months ago. No fun.
Very interesting. I am trying to grow stuff. I live in south fl. Where do you get these seeds? I am not familiar with these type of pease and many fl veggies. Can you tell how you cook? Do you know where to get malabar spinach?
This year I got the seeds from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange but I have also bought them from Baker Creek in the past. I bought Malabar Spinach from Seed Savers Exchange but it is not my favorite summer green. I prefer New Zealand Spinach or Green Callaloo as a Spinach substitute in the summer. The same seed companies usually have those too. These peas are types of “southern peas” and I think they are actually a bean even though they are called peas, so you would cook them similar to how you cook dried beans, meaning you soak them first, discard the water and then simmer them in fresh water until they are tender. If cooking fresh peas then you don’t have to soak them first. There are a lot of good recipes online. I cook mine southern style with ham or bacon and onion.

Do you know where I can buy conks and black eyes to put in my freezer? There was like a co-op up there somewhere that I bought peas from two years ago but I lose my contact information. Do you have any idea what place I’m talking about? Or of any place around there?thank you so much.
I’m not sure. I wonder if you might be thinking of Sweetwater Organic farm/co-op? That’s the only place I know of in my area but I am not sure if they are still open and operating.
Is there another "official name" for zipper creams? I'm looking for the white-yellowish peas that are larger than your average black-eyed pea? They re softer.
I'm having trouble locating them.
I don’t know of another name for them. You could try googling “zipper cream southern pea seeds”. I got mine from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.
@@floridavegetablegardening Thanks. I planted what I thought were zippers and they've made and I did find the right ones apparently. They are called cow peas in my area. Anyway, they are so delicious. My grandmama and dad grew them for years and now I can finally continue the lineage.
