I started streaming art on Twitch in February 2021. After my dad passed away in 2020 due to Covid, I took the leap by making him a huge motivation & inspiration to get started! What stopped me was really just me and my fears but my dad believed in me and what I could do with my art. THIS is why I decided to finally face my fears and explore the new possibilities that I'll find in streaming and I have to say, the BEST so far is the community and friends I've met and will meet in the future. Thank you for this video 💜

You can always start once a week or twice a week and try to dedicate to it. You don't have to do long streams too. You can do some night streams (if you work during the day) and start off with 1 hour streams. That is how I started off.

im on a spare, sorry for my weird username lol. start whenever you feel comfortable. if anything, try and focus on certain points on your art.(im still developing my style btw) lets say you want to focus on anatomy. what do you want to do? try narrowing it down to something specific. try something like hands, arms, legs, etc. about hands: i know it seems like a struggle. drawing finger and/or palms suck. try practicing palm shapes for a few hand poses, then practice fingers. the more configurations and shapes of hands you discover and learn, the easier it will be to draw hands. respond to this comment if you ever have any questions!

Appreciate these tips but I feel these are quite, uhmm, high level and applicable to most other streamers. Don’t get me wrong super helpful and right on the money, but also the same type advice gaming streamers give out too (maybe sans the “sounding like a professor” one). Would love a “102” version of this video that really narrows down on artist specific tips:
How much to talk while drawing
Incorporating audience feedback vs author intent (do they feel not heard if you don’t incorporate? Does that hurt retention?)
What kinda of art resonates well?
Do you only use the “art” tag? Or if I’m making aet of a game am i better off using that game’s tag?
What makes a “clickable title” for art making streams?
Do you only ever stream art making or other things too (just chatting, playing games etc)?
Would love a video that digs into those kinds of questions

What’s stopping me is that the only equipment I have is an IPad, my ability to think on the spot and be charming and well talking.
I would like to stream on my IPad showing my digital process but I felt that would be boring if there wasn’t a discussion.
Instead of having to show my face, I’d like to show mini drawing reactions on a corner of the screen instead, as what you’d see in a video tutorial/discussion where an artist talks as their persona, while discussing a topic. I have no clue how to make that come true yet.
I have however set up goals and a starting date after watching tips on this streaming topic.
Reason for wanting to stream : Establishing a small community to follow along as I will one day create, and publish, my future comics. To gain acquaintances, and perhaps to even learn from one another.
    Starting date : April 15, 2024
    Goal 1 : getting 2 viewers by June, 2024
Goal 2 : getting 20 viewers by the end of 2024
    Requirements :
    - Further research
    - Minimum Editing skills
    - Learning how to stream ( choosing an app compatible on the IPad, for now I’m going to try to work Streamlab on the set date )
    - Learning how to save the stream ( I have no clue on how to save the stream as a video and how much memory that’ll require each time )
    - Being comfortable with talking ( in general and by myself )
    - Having a topic to talk about
    - Streaming Safety Issues : Turning off notifications when streaming, changing the home screen just in case and the time difference)
    Extra :
    - Loading screen before starting the stream (….what is this and is it possible to implement with limited resources )
    - Knowing if saving videos…will have a strain on memory storage

Dave thank you for the video. I have an additional question though... I tried streaming and.... well... I had crazy levels of performance anxiety and stress. I simply couldn't do even simple warm up to start. So darn nervous that I had to stop after an hour and pick myself up over the course of two days. I really wanted to stream, to hang out with people to let them know me better but it seems I am too shy and introverted to do so.
Please do you have any tips or advice to help me with my issue here? Or do you think it's simply not the route for me?
I don't mind recording videos - timelapses of my process since I can easily forget I am being recorded and just flow into the zone but I am unable to do it live.

    • @katiecanine4548
      @katiecanine4548 Před 4 lety +5

I don't have any experience so I don't know if this helps but maybe you can work your way up? If you have anxiety I think you should start slow and not overdo it because like that it becomes a negative experience. Maybe you can just begin with shorter streams and end when you feel unwell. And if you can, include your fears and talk about them. Maybe I am wrong and I am only talking garbage but I think there are many people out there who would totally get you and connect with you. This way it would not only let you share your art but also your journey of overcoming fear and I think people could really like to be a part of that.
(Also, I don't know if you showed your face since people usually really like that but staying incognito can really help as well since it makes you a little bit more untouchable. I even don't use my real name here on CZcams and it makes me a lot more free to give my opinion somehow.)

Streaming isn't for everyone. Which is ok. I think most people enjoy streaming, because it's a very genuine experience. I think Dave described it best in his video. It's a very chill and fun experience. It can be tough starting out. But you get used to it with practice. I suggest just drawing what you enjoy most. Or dive more into recording.

@@katiecanine4548 Thanks. Well I dont even have camera so it was just my art and chat but there was just one person watching me, not interacting whatsoever. It was really bad experience because I felt unwell for two days or so afterwards. What also frustrated me was the fact that I somehow forget to draw during the streaming. Like I couldn'T even draw the basic pose I was used to drawing with ease or thinkign about it and I simply couldnt do a bloody thing. I dunno maybe I'd be able to push through it but I'D probably would have to go through the few months of feeling unwell, I dunno. In the past it took me years to not be overly nervous to do basic prezentation in highschool or elementary . Well now I am startign to soudn liek I'm whining. @@thunderdumpling3528 Thank you! Yes I believe Dave described it great. It'S probably chill for most people like hanging out. For me it isnt, well drawing with peopel you know irl like in school or something used to be tough for me as well. Like once everybody starts mindign their business and stop staring at what I'm doing, then I can start easing out and geting into the zone. Sigh. I guess live is not for me then.
BUT I'll do some recording, I don'T mind that. Heck I even used to do machinimas so it doesn'T feel so bad and I don'T get unwell during or after the session ;)
Either way, thank you it helped me out.

@@debilita9999 we all make mistakes. It's apart of the game. The best thing that can be done is learning from mistakes and improving your self. We are our own worst critics. Don't beat yourself up about it. It sounds like streaming is a bit much at the moment. But I believe that being apart of communities is important. Try watching other art streams and learn from them. Cubebrush has a really friendly forum where you can get feedback for your artwork. Or give feedback to others. It's easier said than done. But being yourself is really important when getting involved with any form of social media. Just ease into things, I doesn't have to be immediately into steaming.

Lol after reading some of the comments where people were saying they would stream for hours and nobody would show up in the chat (I’m old so I didn’t even know that was a thing lol), I had a neat idea. I want to start streaming and, as I’m sure would happen, I’ll just talk to myself the entire time. And call the stream “Talking To A Brick Wall” and have a brick wall as the backdrop lol fun

whats stopping me...man ? insecurities ...debts to pay.....the know how to build an audience....age....so much stuff to solve...and i really cry because all i can do i to procastinate and feel guilty to sell my dream over stability ..which is perfectly logic for the society where i live in...

my favorite art tip has to be the 20/80 rule, where you fill the first 20% of your work with a boring ad and introduction and the other 80% with the actual topic. i know its a rude tone, but its my greatest pet peeve has to be endless intros. i can only hope that it was the advertisers fault this time around. i simply will never accept an ad from anyone and when it conflicts with my ability to receive free informational content, it feels like my brain is draining out of my ears.

I am 51 and consider myself to be just learning digital art. I am more used to painting portraits traditionally. I am keen to push myself to evolve my digital art and learn more along the way and I thought twitch might be a good way to start to build up a community and learn as I go by streaming and sharing my journey. Do you think twitch is over saturated to start or could this be a good opportunity for me to start on twitch? Or is it a young persons game? I work shifts as a nurse so could potentially find it hard to stream the same day, same time every week. I appreciate the time you took to read this comment. T x

Great video. I'm luckily over the hump with a scheduled stream time (every Thursday at 9PM, have been doing it for the past 12 weeks so far) and small but dedicated fanbase.. but I only stream on FB Live. I've been hesitant to make the jump to Twitch, even though I've had a lot of people telling me to do it, as I don't feel like my illustration ability is up to snuff yet and I'm kinda afraid I'm going to get eaten alive over there. :/
Any advice on how to overcome that?

    • @DaveGreco
      @DaveGreco  Před 4 lety +1

Taking the leap is worth it! And don't worry about being eaten alive.. the art community on twitch is super welcoming.
