Indian South Africans: The story of indentured labourers

  • Durban, South Africa is home to the largest concentration of Indians outside India. Today the diversity within the coastal city is celebrated, but it was not always that way.
For centuries, Indians were taken to South Africa as slaves and indentured slaves.
Indians spent years living under strict rules stripping them of their rights and freedoms.
As Nelson Mandela became an icon for freedom and justice for Black South Africans in the mid-to-late 20th century, there was a similarly popular figure who travelled from India to the African nation half a century earlier to become an icon for indentured labourers.

just wanted you to know, i think you might find it interesting, if sookram is your family's real last name, than you can search on google, the name of the villages where the people has your surname. most of the surname in india, are linked to specific villages (where the surnames might have originated) which has "devtas" (your ancestors) shrine.
this is a very ancient custom in india, going on from generation to generations, where we pray offerings to our ancestors, keeps us connected to them. so if you ever come to india, for vacation or anything, i think you should check your home village out and must take a visit to the shrine. 💖

Try the bunny chow which is our national street food (invented by us charous). P.S. South African Indians refer to ourselves as Charous, it's an accepted slang word and something we embrace and hold very dear. We often joke like "Hey I'm not an Indian, I'm a charou) lol. Which is not an act of denying our roots but rather a statement that we are South African Indians. You can't be called a charou if you're an Indian from any other country. Love from South Africa

These people (which are my people too because my parents are from Mauritius and I'm from Botswana) and Egyptians, Moroccans, Algerians, Tunisians, Libyans.etc who are arab/berber and any other race from Africa are Africans. Tired of people telling me I'm not African. It's not like we chose to be forcefully moved as slaves to Africa centuries ago just like how black people didn't choose that for themselves to be moved to America. His company, Statesman Towncar, always contracted to drive around officials from India when they came to Oregon. Indians come in all shades. I saw a documentary once of people living on an island in India and they were still living untouched by modern civilization. They looked African including their hair. The Indian government was keeping their lifestyle intact and not allowing outsiders to mingle with them. From this I concluded that during some ancient age, Africans got to India and mixed with the population there resulting in the various shades of Indians.

More politically correct nonsense. India was never a country before the British came. It was a dirt poor land with illiterate farmers. The British came and for two hundred years significantly IMPROVED the lives of Indians. The British developed roads, infrastructure, a system of education with schools and colleges. Introduced the English language. Introduced sports like cricket, field hockey and track and field. Later the British helped developed a government and finally helped India become an independent country in 1947. I should know I am from India, I was born there, both my parents were born there and all four of my grandparents and all eight of my great-grandparents were born there.
