    In every video I've watched - the .40 has taken the cake. The .45 expands larger, but the .40 utilizes its energy better, therefore, creating a greater wound track. You're also getting higher capacity in a more compact gun. Everyone who despises the caliber needs to take another look!

    Good test, AZ, but a sub 1000 fps 185 in 45 ACP is downright pitiful! A 185 should be doing close to 1100 fps or more, which would probably put it close to 1000 or so out of a short barreled 1911. Not that the frangible Silvertip bullet would have done any better, it would have maybe made a slightly larger stretch cavity but penetration would have been just as poor! The 40 is a much better choice than the .45 in this case!
    My Speer 185 Gold Dots are doing very close to 1200 fps out of my 1911 Govt Model, which is the velocity a good 185 should be getting! None of this watered down junk for me!
    Cheers,
    jc

    The 40 checked all the boxes pretty well. The 45 did really well all things considered. It would be better if it could penetrate a bit more but the stills tell a story also and the big bore didn't disappoint. The permanent cavity may not have been as large as one might desire but it wasn't insignificant for sure. If these are available and reasonable they wouldn't fail to be effective for purpose IMO. Thank you. Good comparison.

      short barrel .45 does absolutely awful most of the time. .45 is already moving slow, and it suffers MUCH more from velocity loss in a short barrel

    • @nokoolaid
      @nokoolaid Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@acid6urns A short barrel will have an effect, but Federal HST works pretty well in a short barrel. Some ammo makers really drop the ball here. for instance, Hornady Critical Defense in 45 is supposed to get 1000fps out of a 3" barrel with a 185g bullet. I've seen videos where it doesn't make that with a 5" barrel. That's a problem and it's not because it's a 45, it's because the manufacturer is screwing over the customer in not delivering the performance as advertised. Buffalo Bore and Underwood generally perform very well by comparison.

    • @acid6urns
      @acid6urns Před 4 měsíci

      @@nokoolaid i don’t think you understand what i’m saying. even good ammo from a .45 in most 230gr loads that’s just shy of 1000fps out of say a 4 or 5 in barrel will see MASSIVE velocity drop going from a 5”-4” or 4”-3” in comparison to basically any other handgun round. .45 acp as a round is just simply more susceptible to bleeding velocity when shortening barrel length than other calibers are.

    The extra velocity in these light-for-caliber makes a difference. 45ACP's historical effectiveness is based on the subsonic round's huge expanded dimensions plowing a wide path. Shock-wave tissue disruption is velocity-based and exemplified in 357S/MAG crossing into hydrostatic shock territory. Ballistic studies have established the 125gr/1450ftps=583ft/lbs as the Gold Standard of defensive rounds dumping this energy in 12-14 inches and causing central nervous system (CNS) damage from the ballistic pressure wave. Water is not compressible which makes it an ideal medium to transfer energy to the brain.

    People are obsessed with over penetration, you dont need 18 inches, the idea is for the round to dump the energy inside the body, not blow out the back. Your heart and aorta are about 3.5 inches deep from the chest. yes 3.5.
    Human bodies are frail, take a ruler, measure on the body just how thick it is. 10 inches is more than enough.
    The .45 was designed to leave a big hole and dump all its energy.

      Gelatin isn't tissue and has no bones. It's merely a consistent test medium that is a similar density to relaxed muscle.
      Not all defensive gun shots are over the heart, at a 90 deg angle, and unobstructed.
      That's why more than 3.5 inches of penetration in test media is desired.
