- The Last Days of Little Italy: An Original Documentary Series.
Little Italy, a historic haven for immigrant families from the old country, was once threatened by an ever-expanding Chinatown. But now the fatal blow is being delivered by the gentrifiers. Corporations, yuppies, and chain stores all moved in. How did Little Italy transform itself from a working class neighborhood of tenement buildings to the third most expensive zip code in the United States?
Part funny, part sad, the series explores the impact gentrification is having on Little Italy's long-term residents. The striking imagery captures the neighborhood before it is completely erased by sterile trendy stores and upper middle class sameness.
Will New York City lose another cultural touchstone to the forces of greed?

Bravo Michael! His testimony brought tears to my eyes because although I am not a New Yorker, I was born/raised in what was then Chicago's "Little Italy" after WW 2. Many people lost their buildings and apartments after 1963 when I was in high school; the University of Illinois, with the [then] Mayor Richard J. Daley's 'blessing' confiscated and demolished entire blocks of Italian family owned row houses, small bungalows, apartment buildings, family businesses, butcher, baker, pork stores, even several churches demolished, [one was our family parish] all in the name of 'progress. Little Italy 'disappeared' and is now trendy, ridiculously expensive and a "United Nations" of people due to the presence of the huge University built over what were Italian immigrants homes and small businesses and apartments like Michael's. I am 3 years older than Michael so I share his memories and what we as Italian-Americans lost: the collective sense of community identity, fellowship and care for one another. Hang in there Michael!
@@sgiovangelo47 Thanks for watching!
I'm really enjoying this series. It's the same all over the world, same here in London. People who were born and raised here are being priced out and yuppies are moving in. The Landlords only care about money 🇮🇹
Wow Michael what a nostalgic apartment I would love to visit you . Little Italy is where my Great grandmother and grandfather settled . Little Italy has always been a favorite of mine .
Thanks for watching
Beautiful furnishings in the apartment, ❤what a story
It's extremely hard watching this series, it is so sad to see the end of Little Italy, I can feel it slipping away and I can feel life slipping away, this will never come back
Some funny episodes coming soon
Thank you for making this series. 🇮🇹🇺🇸 we appreciate you. 🤟🏼❤️ keep it up!
@@JoJo.Christmas thank you!
Again....same since episode 1...Standing Ovation,,,🙌 💯💯. The days of neighborhoods, community, pitching in to pick up your fellow man, woman and child (family).. Gone.. That is true value....wealth...the meaning of being truly Rich! Stand for Something or you are doomed to fall for anything!
Thanks so much!
Being an Italian who was born in America, I support you!
Thanks!
Mr & Mrs Scorcesse had the same painting of the Calmaday Sisters in their apartment as you do and I have it too handed down from my Italian, Sicilian grandparents😂 the original hangs in the Met
Fight the good fight. Seeing the inside of that apartment reminds me of my grandparents home in Cleveland. My uncle still lives in that house and I’m thankful that it’s still in the family with all the memories that it holds. Thanks for these videos. Enjoying the series.
@@markmerella3894 thanks!
I live off the grid in New Mexico. My mother-in-law traded the quarter acre for an oriental rug. There are no services, but it is totally self-sufficient with solar, and water catch. I pay 5 dollars a year for property taxes. There is no value in the land and house really, but it is my home and isn't that what we all want and what should be our right to have.
Unbelievable. This man has a Droste Cacao can. A former chocolate factory in Haarlem (Netherlands). This factory is now a monumental building
Amazing!
I just love this series. My grandmother and my great grandparents came from Italy in 1907 and lived on Mulberry street. It makes me sad that Little Italy has lost most of it's italians. Michael I wish you all good things in life and that you will always remain in your apartment. I wish time didn't change things. I always went to Little Italy every year but it has changed much. God Bless you.
Thanks for watching!
Good for you, Michael. You're right about the landlord having no right to evict; nor do they have the right to harass you. Be well and God bless.
🎉 This is Economy Wrong and that is it
Everyone needs to see this
That is a great law, what you are talking about here, the right of succession, that, when all is said and done,is the way things should be, unfortunately I've never heard of anything like that over here, IN London England, good luck to you
What an amazingly preserved apartment . It looks like it hasn't changed since the 50s
It hasn’t changed since 1898. 🤣
@PaulStoneFilms did you ask him about the apartments decor ? I mean, it looks like a museum 😀
What a beautiful story he doesn’t pay that much rent and he knows the system. He must be very proud.😂
Ah, you have the Seaman's Bank piggy-bank mate!
for $87 a month i'd happily take those inconveniences
Thanks for making this
$87.25 for rent in Little Italy, most peoples property tax is more than his yearly rent.
One good thing left about nyc is rent control.
@@PaulStoneFilms These videos are really good its insane they don't have more views already.
My property tax is 91 times higher than his rent.
His monthly rent, that is.
@@daveRap2272 So like 80 times higher than his yearly rent.
I’m all for tenants not being gouged by greedy landlords thinking it’s fair to charge 4k a month to live in tiny , outdated apartments but hanging on to a place for decades and getting away with paying $87 a month?! That’s called being a parasite. This is part of the reason why landlords in nyc have to gouge the young.
@@josephtomaselli9181 Michael didn’t create the laws so what you are saying is the politicians who created rent control are parasites. I’m OK with that. 👌🏻
@@PaulStoneFilms No Micheal didnt create the laws, but there is a lot of room for increasing at least for the sake of building upkeep.
"Location, location, location." 3 most important words in real estate. He is single, in Little Italy, and has a beautiful big home super cheap. No need for a car.
@@steveb9525 living the dream! Thanks for watching
❤️❤️❤️🥰💚💚💚
Can’t wait to watch in a few
He’s living in his home, a beautiful home
I'm not sure if this clip makes me a little happy or a little sad.
@@Kriti98 hopefully both!
The rent control laws were put in place in 1943 and it’s absolutely ludicrous that people are paying under $100 for an apartment in NYC. I don’t care how you try to rationalize it. I do believe in rent stabilized and “lottery” apartments, but rent controlled apartments need to go.
They have to get $6k from "transient" students to offset the $87.
epic
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
If you don't invest in your community; someone else will. Financial literacy is always key. Chinese neighborhoods are still Chinese, Indian neighborhoods are still Indian and Williamsburg Brooklyn is still Jewish. If families invest and stick together; the sky is the limit.
87 dollars good for you cuz
87 dollars a month for rent and you still complain ? ! Ask the Lenape Indians.
While I respect that this guy has a low rent.
But 87 dollars a month has plenty of room to increase upward.
I'm not saying it should be anywhere near the thousands but it can increase for the sake of helping contribute to building upkeep.
Anyway, bodbless this guy.
Illegal immigrants!
