- The Futaleufu River lies deep within the Andean Corridor of Lakes (Region X - Chiloe, Palena District) in Northern Patagonia, Chile. The headwaters of the river lie in Argentina’s Los Alerces National Park originating from a hydro-electric station below the man made lake, Lago Amutui Quimei. On the Argentine side of the border the Rio Futaleufu is known as the Rio Grande. The Futaleufu flows southwest and empties into Lago Yelcho and finally flows to the Southern Pacific Ocean as Rio Yelcho.

Back in the VHS recording days I watched and recorded a video of a world-famous kayaker who gave up everything in the US to move to Patagonia just to kayak and raft on the Futaleufu. I put this on my bucket list at that time. Now finally over 20 yrs later I have booked a trip to Chile. Feb 2023 is not that far away, and I am coming to raft and experience this wonder.
OMG, how was it? im From Chile, i just rafting the Petrohue, but not this one, was too hard?
How was the trip?!
Yeah how was it
Guessing he didn't make it guys.
I believe that is the gentleman narrating this video- Chris Spelius I think.
I can never get over how clear the water is down there.
Great video! Thumbs up and subscribed.
What a stunning River, aqua marine water and rapids of joy.
Hermoso lugar en Chile🙂🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱
Hopefully be there anytime soon. Great footage of an amazing river. Can't wait until next video you upload. Thanks for sharing and let us know what we have.
Would love to do this river once in my lifetime. Ungodly great!!
Really great 🙏
February 1991, glad to see you're still there stud
as a novice, I took a half day trip with others that I was touring with (Intrepid tours)... I was expecting a normal roller coaster type of ride...we started off with class 2-3 rapids which then went to 4, and then class 5 rapids..I think we had to go through three of those....after flipping twice, (no one but the guide knew what they were doing), I was completely terrified...it was like a ride that you couldn't get off of until you finished the course....just be careful of what you wish for!
Mark Ferry great description, I could see how that would be a little sketchy. When the guide yells out “nice knowing you” you know you’re in big trouble.
LOL great description.
That's how I felt when I rafted on the mighty Zambezi in Victoria falls, Zimbabwe. I was thrown 3 times. I still recall the power of the water and the overwhelming noise of the rapids; once you get thrown in into a grade 5 rapid... it's akin to a religious experience.
Viva CHILE 🇨🇱.
Bellisimas imagenes , es un lugar de fantasias , lindo ! Saluds desde cba arg
Very inspiring love u from Bhutan....
Very inspiring shots and whitewater stretches. You immediately get pleasure. Greetings ronactive
This is amazing
what a dream!!
It really is a place painted by god😊
Magic Futaleufú ,
❤
Throne room was the only level 5 rapid I seen.
Cool
fucking brilliant.
This river is insane! How paddle-able is it with an open canoe? Can you portage anything above class 2+/3? Thanks for sharing this, really considering going for it April 2023...
EDIT : After watching this, you've answered my question, definitely too much to take on solo and in an open canoe!! Any other suggestions for a long touring river? THANK YOU!
Is this filmed in low water?
Ronan Shaw yes it's pretty low on this footage
ha I had the same thought.. For V and V+, it all looked preeetty mellow. I can only assume it's all undercut or something too.. though all the biggest rocks had some pretty hearty pillows on them.
the one and only from indonesia 2010.....
Im doing this!!!
None of those rapids where anywhere near V+.
A little bit dramatic with the music for Throne Room, and I don't think it's Class 5+. Look at what guys are paddling nowadays and ask yourself if this is a fair comparison.
those are not 5s
I don't think I saw a single class V
4+. The 4s looked like class 3
It's another price...
@@RichRich1955 nothing looked all that hard. possibly undercut or pinny?
This video shows the river at a low level. I kayaked it in 98 at a high level. My video is here, czcams.com/video/8ix5r3IYBo8/video.html
Even though Chris is a white water legend the descriptions and ratings are totally wrong. Rarely paddlers paddle Zeta since a death in1997. It is the most dangerous rapid on the river. My ratings are in order, Zeta, Throne Room, Terminator, Inferno Canyon, Casa De Piedra. I know Inferno Canyon has changed but the 1st and last rapid involves many moves with really bad consequences with a swim.

I’ve actually said that word accidentally, pretending to speak French 😂
In my mind it was spelled like this, foo tula foo. Wee wee!
No one cares...
me encantaría ir, si tan solo no fuera un argentino con un peso que no vale nada
Vamos amigo ya saldrán de todo esto.
