  • In this next route learning video, we had back to Train Sim World for a fast run along the Great Western Main Line between Reading and London Paddington, calling at Slough along the way. There is unfortunately a major graphical glitch with the HST, which DTG are aware of and looking into.

      The issue really as more and more devs rely on game engines, like this one uses Unreal Engine 4, they are then locked into that Engines limitations.
      Mods are possible, but the core game has to accept them. And the modders will also have to use Unreal Engine to do so. All the scripting needed, will have to be written in a form that UE4 can understand and the game has to have been built with external commands in mind.
      Its a long, complex system that not a lot of people are willing to do. Heck if you know how to use UE4 then why make mods when you can make your own games? Of course not everyone feels this, but truth is. Casuals arent going to learn all of UE4 editing just to make mods.
      Their previous game TS20xx, was built using a custom engine, with a custom built editor for all to use. That's how modding works in that game.
      Not saying modding is impossible, just not very likley to happen in large numbers.

    Southall is pronounced as it's spelled (south-all). My parents are from there and lived not far from the station for some 30 years. Great video, man you learn routes quick! Sadly, I don't have a beefy enough computer to run this DLC even on the lowest of graphics settings, but at least I can watch these videos on it.
    Cheers,

      I was about to come out with some lengthy rant about the pronunciation of English place names but Matthew B got there ahead of me. He obviously took an earlier train. (Joke). I lived in and around Southall since 1951 and have never heard it called that strange version of events as you claim it to be. You gave me a good laugh though.

    A very nice video as usual, Peter. As a native of Hanwell, the next stop towards Paddington, I can confirm that the correct pronunciation of Southall is South_all as in North and South.
    Also the electrification structure is complete as far as Reading if not functioning west of Maidenhead, my local station. The new electric trains are already running from the new depot at Maidenhead to Paddington, to supplement the DMU services.

    Used to live at a place called Hayes End, a 10 minute bus ride from Hayes and Harlington Station. Lived there for 6 years, and I used to take the train from Hayes and Harlington into Paddington when I returned to adult college for GCSE and eventually for Uni in central London. I loved that train journey, just staring out the window along the way. Interesting to see it in the virtual world. I assume I must have seen that train dozens of times speeding past me as I stood waiting for my 'slow' train into Paddington. By the way, Southall is pronounced South-Hall (with no actual perceivable gap between the two syllables)

    Apologies if this has already been said, but if not...
    The line the train was on is actually the Up Main, NOT the Up Fast. The Western do not use the terms fast, slow, etc. From left or right, in direction of travel of the train, the lines are: Up Relief, Down Relief, Up Main, Down Main :)
    Besides that, thanks for the video! Nice to finally see some gameplay.
    Oh and it is pronounced south-all, not "suthal" :)

      The sim world moves at an elephant pace. This runs better than the older games because it's actually on a new engine.
      So no, it will run smoothly with a normal pc. Wanna run the older train simulator smoothly? Good luck with that!

    • @LupusAries
      @LupusAries Před 7 lety

      You can mostly...........if you pile on the power......and OC. ;)
      But yeah it is never fully smooth, even with the SSD, it runs mostly smooth, but there are the odd jolts.
      And there is the dreaded 3.5-4GB ram limit, which is a major pain in the bum!
      It's a bit like the old FSX engine, and what keeps it alive right now, is the sheer breadth of content, and the quality of some of the third-party content, like JT's Advanced series, especially the Kettles, Meshtools, Railright/AP, Waggonz/AP, APs Sound- and Enhancement packs, the SSS Sound and enhancement packs, Victoryworks, Railtraction, and Virtual Railroads.
      The engine of Railworks/TS 2017 though is almost as much a wreck as the FSX engine.
      The UE4, if it's well optimized can run much better and take advantage of the modern hardware.
      If it wasn't for the content, especially the third party one, we'd have jumped ship long ago. ;)
      The funny thing is, my GTX 970 didn't do that much for performance compared to my GTX 570, only the added VRAM helped a lot.
      My i5-6600k did something, a bit more than my old Phenom II X4 Oced to 3.8 ghz, it only truly picked up after I went and oced that to 4.3 ghz.
      The SSD though had an impact, made things more smooth, not fully though, and thankfully cut the loading times. On the rather infamous Northern Europe Route (that old one depicting the whole of denmark) it cut the loading times from over 2 minutes to down to around 30 seconds.

    Of the line, they could have at least kept the distance of the line for realism as class 166 very rarely only terminate at reading , also the hst is really quite useless if it only can go to reading, it would be fun to go to didcot parkway again,also the liveries on the trains it’s a bit boring only seeing the GWR green livery yeah it’s good but after a while it gets boring.

    Thoughts in no particular order: Next gen train simulator and ATP dosent function ... *sigh* .... Great video PTG, I saw that HST graphical glitch in the stream, I'm sure that will get fixed but the ugly stop markers and having to pull up that orrable TAB menu to unlock the doors are massive immersion breakers that could have been given key bindings ... BTW Southall is "south-hall", I lived and worked in the area for twenty years and I have been travelling the route regularly for nearly 50 years and I have never heard Southall pronounced "suthall" ... The GWR preservation society yard there played host to A4 Union of South Africa for a while, you can always see neat stuff there. ... lastly one thing i noticed about the route is a few fairly mundane buildings have been modelled exactly as they are while some stand out very distinctive landmark buildings have been represented with generic models ... Crossbow House looked like it was on the wrong side of the road.

      Whats wrong with them?

    • @volatus_sim
      @volatus_sim Před 7 lety +2

      Erik Piussi Signalling = the aspect should change to danger after the train has entered the track circuit for which the signal is protecting. This would normally take a few seconds after the rear of the train has passed. Headlights = the 166's appear to have both daytime and nighttime headlights on. Trains in the UK only use one bright headlight at a time, designed to be seen by track workers and not to light the path like car lights do. In the unreal engine I expect see accurate lighting effects with one shining bright light and position lights much duller, not two lights of the same intensity.

    • @erikpiussi2960
      @erikpiussi2960 Před 7 lety +1

      oke thanks :)

    • @mumrarmatt
      @mumrarmatt Před 7 lety

      Erik Piussi your assumptions regarding track circuits aren't correct, there is no fixed distance between the signal and track circuit to mean it occurs at the same place, some change the instant one bogie is past the signal, some change when the front of the train is some 20 to 30 vehicle lengths past the signal, and it isn't identical for every signal. In TS20XX this can be replicated by moving the positions of the track link so hopefully the same may be said for TSW when we get editing tools.

    • @erikpiussi2960
      @erikpiussi2960 Před 7 lety

      I did not have any assumptions. ;)

  • @Robbedem
    @Robbedem Před 7 lety

    I hope DTG will be able to improve the performance so that you can get a framerate of at least 60 FPS on fast track sections (these can included pass-through stations) and at least 30 FPS at end stations.
    30 FPS when going 125 mph is just not enough. When the next frame is rendered, you travelled almost 2 meters further, so you can't even see the signs properly! (f.e. try to read the sign at 30:09 *)

    Have been watching your videos for a while now and have found them all to be very informative and enjoyable. As you note the Ammeter isn't accurate but then the braking characteristics for HST's under train sim have never truly reflected real life. Brake application and release on the real thing takes much, much longer. HST's under train sim have always reacted to brake application/release almost immediately. If they could work on improving that, it would make for a much more realistic drive. Keep up the good work.

    • @volatus_sim
      @volatus_sim Před 7 lety

      Jason Cressey a number of TOCs have simulators, matching real life behaviour of their HSTs. It feels like DTG haven't bothered to approach them. I'm not sure what simulation engine the real sims use but the routes and driving characteristics are 100% accurate.

    • @TheMarsupial1974
      @TheMarsupial1974 Před 7 lety

      Volatus Sim, I agree entirely with your comments. I drive the HST's on the Midland Main Line and have used the East Coast HST simulator which is remarkably accurate. I know that a major player in the commercial simulator market is a company called Corys. Having said that if real HST's were able to work like that and have the ability to have almost immediate brake application/release then my life would be made a lot easier. That's the nature of air brake and part of the reason why drivers love them as they require skill and judgment to get the best from them.

    • @volatus_sim
      @volatus_sim Před 7 lety

      Jason Cressey presumably you sign 222's as well, and if so you know just how poorly Just trains have replicated the meridians. It seems theres just no one out there willing to make an accurate commercial train simulator.

    • @TheMarsupial1974
      @TheMarsupial1974 Před 7 lety

      Volatus Sim, yes I do sign 222's. I know there is a lot of demand and expectation from people that the train sims offer realism but to what extent? When all is said and done are the software houses target audience, game players who want an element of reality that they can relate to? I would think that R&D time and cost to generate a truely accurate physics engine would be disproportionate based on their target audience. Then again I guess you could argue that that type of demand is out there if you look at flight sim as an example. If what you want is an immersive train driving experience on routes that you know or are interested in then I guess it ticks that box!!!!!

    • @volatus_sim
      @volatus_sim Před 7 lety

      Jason Cressey, I agree entirely. I personally enjoy flight sim because I was a budding pilot before the medical put an end to that. I know there are people out there who have grown tired of non functioning buttons and switches in DTG train products, combined with their lazy, recycling of sounds etc. To me train sim World has been marketed as flight sim standard train sim. Clearly though, they are just upgrading their earlier product. I bet if DTG reached out to you you'd have little difficulty testing products for them right?

    The graphics look very nice, and the number of different scenarios is very impressive......but 40 miles of track between London Paddington and Reading is nowhere near good enough (particularly for the HST 125). Someone let me know when they have extended the line to Bristol Temple Meads (which would be more like 120 miles).

  • @MarkHewitt1978
    @MarkHewitt1978 Před 7 lety

    I know you don't drive with the HUD but from what I've seen TSW doesn't have the same notification of upcoming signals and speed limits, or does it? And if not how's someone who doesn't photographically memorise the route going to manage?

    • @JohnAlanSlavin
      @JohnAlanSlavin Před 7 lety

      There are notifications, like little bubbles that appear in the HUD to tell you about signals and limits. But they can be switched off, so you can use them to learn the route but switch them off later.

    Very nice! I notice at the end of one of my HST services it asked me to unlock the doors at Paddington. But for the life of me I can't find the control or keyboard command. Do you know if this is possible on the TSW HST yet?

    • @emardis8982

      Jeff Skiba I had exactly the same problem earlier! You have to press the 'tab' key and select the option to unlock the doors.

    Just for info the AWS has a fault at the moment (as stated by by Matt Peddlesden of Dovetail Games in his stream). He recommends not to use it, as you can get random warnings and emergency brakes being applied for no reason. They know what's wrong and it will be fixed in the next patch. Also for those that don't like motion blur, they hope to be adding a setting within game to enable/disable it. You can disable it now if you add a couple of lines to one of the .ini files. In the class 166, I activate the AWS and DSD as instructed in the manual. The AWS works perfectly. But the train stops automatically. There is no buzzing sound. It just brakes by itself. Please help .
