- Red is the most mysterious colour to me among the three primary colours. So I've decided to create colour swatches to see their differences.

I really like your videos, but there is always a lot of background noise. You should try to get a better microphone, I recommend you get a lavalier microphone or a shotgun mic.
Very cool❤
Thanks for a look at the reds you use! You can probably already figure out that I love seeing other artists pigment choices ;)
Oh? But my favourite part is to watch you paint the swatches!!! :-/
Mine too 😔
Me too!!!
yaay! I love color (and brand) comparisons. I hope you do this for the other primaries as well (and maybe secondaries too).
This was suuuuper useful *thank you* would love to see this for your blue and yellows as well. This helps in keeping my selection small while still being broad ranged, makes the decisions easier during painting.
Sad. I love watching "the paint dry" LOL love the color comparisons though. I do find myself coming back to your videos over and over again.
Thank you, this was very informative and interesting! The swatches on your blog were really clear and strong, some almost burnt the eyes.
Thank you so much! Because of your video I FINALLY was able to choose between quinacridone magenta and quinacridone rose. The rose seems more versatile for mixing.
Thank you for this video. I love Quin Rose, and I also love Opera. I tend to be a color hoarder and was looking at buying Quin Red, to replace pyroll red in my palette. This gave me a nice view of it along side Quin Rose and Quin Magenta. Thanks again
I enjoyed seeing your reds. The is something I need to do also so I can figure out what colors I want to repeatedly buy.
Thank you for the info Teoh, I am considering buying Daniel Smith products but just few of them so with this new info I can make a better choice. Thanks!
That was very helpful. Thank you, Teoh!
I really enjoy your watercolor comparison videos. Thanks for sharing.
+Winnona Carter Thanks 😁
Very interesting! Thanks, Teoh! 😀
Yaaassssss!!! I've been waiting for this!
Without this video I wouldnt have known quin rose was better than quin magenta for purples! Thank you! So now Ill add that one to my future list
+Winic Fernández Rubel I'm surprised with that finding also. I've always used Quin Magenta.
Thank you for very useful video! There's never enough of such thorough comparisons of paints including mixing... Invaluable source of information!
On a side note pr202 (DS quin magenta) doesn't mix as cleanly as pr122 (DS Quin lilac, new 2017 color) from what I see the shade out of tube is almost the same (purplish rather than pink) but pr122 gives crazy clean purples with ultramarine. :) and some nice muted skintones with cool yellow too. Not mentioning pg7 mixtures that give gorgeous purples and blue-greens as well with some cool toned very dark neutrals in-between :)
I settled down myself on pr255 (pyrrol scarlet) as warm red and pr122 as cool red, with "extra" quin red (pv19) tossed in-between of those for convenience (feels like I'm oversensitive on red spectrum perception T_T) as I have py110 as warm yellow (instead of gamboge mixtures) TPO (po71) feels to be a bit too close to yellow for widest gamut for me.
I recently swatched out my red paints also and my tube of Mission Gold Perm Red is REALLY really vibrant just an FYI its not dull like in the video..Its closer to the other Perm Red sample... . thanks for the video Teoh.
Very helpful video. Quin Rose has been on my palette for years along with Scarlet Lake. However, you've convinced me to give that neglected tube of Transparent Pyrrol Orange an opportunity to WOW me. Thank you!
+Margana Maurer Transparent Pyrrol Orange is also a warm red, but looks different from Scarlet
Indeed. It will be good practice to make swatches of each mixed with my favorite blues and yellows. Thanks for the inspiration.
Nice video. I have almost as many red tubes, heh. I also like to use burnt sienna or transparent oxide red as the "red" in a limited pallet.
thank youuu again a very nice and informative video :)
Like youTeoh, I have quite a few reds. I'm always trying to see the subtle differences in them. I was always looking for a real red such as the red in the American flag or a specific thing. I've found that to get the red of say an apple, you have to mix.
+Barbra Joan Reds would look different under different light too. So there's really no perfect red.
Try Grumbacher Red student grade. Surprisingly vibrant and cheap too.
This is very helpful! Thanks!
Nice last choices :)
I ADORE YOUR VIDEO!
+Svetlana Extra Light Thanks 😁
Thanks Teoh. I was just considering a third red for my new palette. I love the look at Transparent pyrrol orange to swap out my pyrrol scarlet. I think I'll try permanant alizarin crimson.
+Peta Hewitt Maybe go for Perylene Red which looks close but uses only one pigment instead of the three in Perm Alizarin Crimson (I forgot to label the other two).
Thank you. I did not know that. I will try your suggestion. :)
Thanks Teoh. So timely. I've been trying to narrow down a red to buy. I'm leaning towards perm. alizarin crimson because it seems to be a middle of the road (maybe fire engine red RED)? I actually liked the mixtures you got with the Quin. Magenta, but then I prefer more muted colours (as opposed to vibrant colours). Great video and very helpful.
+Mary Algar You can also check out Jane Blundell's website for more info. She has a lot of colour swatches and explanation there.
Yes, familiar with Jane. Another good one, and she recently did her favourite five reds is Denise Soden of In Liquid Color.
This was very informative. I’m tempted to get Permanent Alizarin Crimson, because I’m never happy with the reds I get. I just got a tube of DS Pyrrol Red, I’m going to do some swatches like you did - thanks for the inspiration!
+mtsurikirsten Perylene Red would be better than Perm Alizarin Crimson, which is a three pigment paint. I forgot to label the other two pigments in my video.
Also, it seems PV19 takes on many forms. Surprising how many variations there are.
I wonder how come so many paints that are called red are really orange. Or is that just considered a warm red. Love your channel and thanks for all the info.
very helpful, thank you !
If I am not mistaken the DS Perm Alizarin Crimson is a 3 pigment mix (PR177, PV19, and PR149)
+Alejandro Morales You're right, I forgot to label the other two colours.
What paper surface did you paint on?
Hey! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on this. Please do the magenta vs red discussion someday :-)
+S K I should. People are too caught up with the VS. They are both colours with their own characteristics. If not, there won't be a need to have to many different colour options.
I think the only reason for that debate to matter is when someone is choosing a limited palette. If you are travelling or if you are poor, you need to choose wisely. That could be a helpful very discussion.
I have many reds, as well. The tube of Pyrrol Orange I have does not have the word Transparent. The pigment number is 73, so it is different from the DS Transparent Pyrrol Orange which you show in your video. But, when I mix it with New Gamboge, it makes a very nice orange. I like Quinacridone Rose better than Quinacridone Magenta for making purple. But, the magenta will work in a pinch if I only need a small amount of purple.
+Donna G There are two versions of Pyrrol Orange. But I don't know the difference as I've always used the Transparent version.
Thanks for the reply, Teoh. The Pyrrol Orange that I have right now is a replacement tube for the Pyrrol Orange that came with my Essential 7 set that I got from Daniel Smith. I didn't even know there was a Transparent Pyrrol Orange until I saw it in the video. The Pyrrol Orange that I have is still transparent, though.
It's interesting for sure.
Daniel Smith uses a different pigment for Quin Magenta than most others brands who use PR122. PR122 makes nicer Violets.
We want to watch the swatching! ☹️
Hey thanks so much. Could you pls tell if you can have just one red for a limited palette then what would you have gone for? Which one do you use in your micro palette?
I prefer warm red to mix orange. I don't really use much purple or violet so I'll skip the cool red. As for which warm red. Any scarlet is good.
Teoh Yi Chie thanks so much for your reply. I was about to buy a transparent pyrrol orange after watching this video as i dont like the opacity of my ds pyrrol scarlet but other reviews say that the DS transparent pyrrol orange has changed into more orange side now, is that true?
@@srabastibasu2 PO71 does look a bit more orange than red. Whether you like it really comes down to personal preference. I do like the more reddish version. However, I don't use that colour since I have a warm red that can be used to mix warm orange easily.
Permanent Red (PR209) is most versatile red color (at least in oil).
Hi Teoh.... i recently received the Daniel Smith Alvaro Castagnet Set. You may or may not be familiar with all the colors but i have heard you mention the DS Viridian. You say it doesnt reactivate well with water once dry in a pan. As i am wanting to put the set into halfpans..... does the viridian become completely useless once hardened or does it just require more work to make a wash?? These are my very 1st tube paints and i am unsure of what to do yet? If you or anyone else reading this can offer any advice it would be very appreciated!!! Thank you.... and love your videos, especially all of your urban sketcher symposium videos!!!
No direct experience with viridian, but add a drop or two of glycerine (or runny honey if you want) into pan and stir thoroughly with toothpick. It shouldn't harden to such a rock that way, becoming slightly better rewettable (glycerin and honey are humectants, keeps the paint more moist) Generally all tube paints that dry to rock or crack and flake can be treated this way :)
Still, it won't be next m Graham paint, but your brush should appreciate that small help getting the paint on :)
Another option is swapping the viridian for phthalo green (pg7) at the cost of granulation and liftability, hue-wise they are pretty much same.
Calamity Jitt thanks for the tip... i am considering purchasing another green that is similar... sadly viridian is the only green that came in my set
bretking1978 it can always be used straight out of the tube, albeit it's a bit inconvenient... Plein air wise :) but phthalo green I think is available in 5ml tube too and is from price range 1 - the cheapest ones. So it won't break your bank (unless you are from Europe like me XD) if DS is too expensive in your country, pg7 is pretty much always the same through the brands. Just check its just the pg7 pigment and go with it :)
+bretking1978 You can still rewet Viridian, but it will take more time because the harden form is really hard. It is best to use DS Viridian only from the tube.
+bretking1978 You can just finish using Viridian and switch to other greens. Phthalo Green (Blue Shade) is good but does not look exactly like Viridian (which is also granulating).
Can you review a Scanner that scans 11 X 14 paper?
i've been looking for a large format scanner for months and i can't find any?
please help
+TheMasterOfAllStuff Scanners at that size is usually very expensive. And the cheaper scanners are not good. So it is best to get cheaper A4 scanners and stitch your work after that.
damn, but thank you
Thanks for the video, Teoh. Very interesting! 😊 Hope you do the same for the other primary, or all the colors you have 😅
+Azzu Paris Maybe the future, you can check out the limited colour palette videos I've created
Teoh Yi Chie I love those videos!
Mission Gold's Permanent Red doesn't look like it looks on the swatch you painted, it is really vibrant and it is similar to quinacridone red in hue, maybe your pan was contaminated because permanent red is not brown-ish at all
+Daniel Morales Yeah, most likely contaminated. I've been using that pan for long time.
I think you're right about your Mission Gold Permanent redR being contaminated. PR112 is a very bright Napthol red pigment. Many consider it to be the closest you can get to an un-biased red. Your swatch doesn't look anything like that. ☹️
+bastet469 Yeah, I should have cleaned my paint and brush 😅
Teoh Yi Chie If you haven't already done it, you should do a vid on how to clean contaminated paints. Or did you cover that when you did the moldy paint vid? If so, I'm sorry but I couldn't watch it. Images of mold, mildew etc. are to difficult for me to look at. Lol. It's like a horror movie!😱😱😱
There's no easy way to clean paint. You just have to use a brush, clean the paint, clean the brush, and continue. As for the moldy paints, I used a paint knife to cut away the affected parts. The paints are fine now. I keep them dry and well ventilated. They haven't had any mold attack since. But I'm sure if I keep them damp for a few days, the mold will be back. That I'm very sure.
hmm your mission gold permanent red is very different to my mission gold permanent red. Mine is very much like your shinhan red
+THEMAYQUEEN1 I probably contaminated it. The pan I have looks quite dirty.
So disappointed because I love watching you paint out the swatches (I could seriously watch all day!) but you completely skipped it... noooooo... 😩
Lol, ok I forgive you.
No but really, I love your videos, thanks for making such great content for us! 😁
I thought painting swatches is quite boring 😂
You mentioned some artists believe that Magenta is actually one of the primary colours. I was not aware of that until I recently watched a video about it and read John Muir Law's article: johnmuirlaws.com/color-theory/
Rather interesting I thought.
+Mary Algar Some artists regard the CMY model as the three primary colours. But within that model, there are many variations of primary colours. There's no perfect primary colour model. I don't think you can mix a bright orange with magenta. I may be wrong thought.
You know much more than I do Teoh. I merely found it fascinating that some go with CMY model.
Mission gold's permanent red is definetely contaminated
:)
I really like your videos, but there is always a lot of background noise. You should try to get a better microphone, I recommend you get a lavalier microphone or a shotgun mic.
+MIguel Crespo Because there is really a lot of background noise. This video was made in parts over a few days because of the on-and-off noise. I've gone through several mics already and they can't block out all the noise.
Have you tried a lavalier mic?
I'm using a lavalier mic for almost all my videos. I can close my window to block the noise but that will mean I can't get good enough natural light to make any video. So it's a compromise either way. I wish I live underground. There's crazy amount of construction going on around my neighbourhood constantly. I hi-5 myself whenever I can successfully make a video in a day.
Try closing your window and get one of those Valtrex led light panels to compensate for the light lost. Also clip your microphone as close to our mouth as you can and speak louder. Hope that helps, keep up the good work.
Teoh, I'm sure i'm not alone when I tell you, I kinda like the ambient noise. It makes me feel like I am in the room with you and we are just sitting around chatting.
