  • R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 was developed by Namco in 1998, and despite the fact that the series continued on until 2016, many consider Type 4 the pinnacle of the series. Let’s take a look as to why that may be covering everything from the stylish graphics, phenomenal music, and tight racing mechanics.
Let me know your thoughts on the game and the ridge racer series in the comments, and feel free to suggest any other games you’d like to see covered on the channel.
Thanks so much for watching and have a great day :)

The graphics, the style, the looks, the characters, their stories, their epilogues, the cars, the UI, and the MUSIC. This was and is still is one of my favorite games of all time. I still play to this day. Ridge Racer 7 is pretty good, runs 1080p 60fps.

is beautiful this game but the customization sucks, because is not for grand prix mode, is only for time attack
multiplayer or vs battle, and extra trial the ai in this extra trial mode is so fast than you by the rubber band
in grand prix mode you need to drive a car that the game say, and the team select, like a difficulty
and they change the physics making unfair to drive, i'm really sad because bandai namco never remake a game
like this with new modes, that made you not borring like quick race or free race that are my favorite

I felt like RR: Type 4 was the pinnacle of the franchise. I did enjoy the games that came after, but those all felt like mostly tech demos for the newest console. Type 4 felt like the last Ridge Racer game Namco really tried to add some depth, care, and feeling to the franchise.

Back when Namco was the king of graphics. This and Tekken 3 were the best-looking games for the PlayStation 1. Fear Effect's cell shading look was great too, and Legacy of Kane: Soul Reaver pushed the hardware too. But Namco nailed the sweet spot of maximizing graphics AND performance. Tekken 3 and R4 were silky smooth and made me doubt that the PS1 only had 2MB worth of RAM.

As an older millennial. I was 15 when this game came out. I remember playing it. The high contrast GUI was one of the coolest parts. Coupled with the music. Oh, the music. I remember putting lots of hours into this game. I wish they'd bring back the series for PS5 or PC using the R4 formula. I miss this series. Yoppi, you should review the original Wipeout. This was Namco's magnum opus when it came to the Ridge Racer titles. Everything else after just fell short. Also since you mentioned music, you might want to review Racing Lagoon as well. It was a Japan exclusive RPG racing game from Squaresoft that was in Japanese only text for 22 years until late 2021 when a fan translation was released. The music for that is quite on par with R4 as it's indicative of 90s jazz fusion. And apart from other racing games it has a compelling story that dives into some Lovecraftian levels of existentialism.

PS1 era soundtracks felt a bit more out there & experimental than the later generations. Too many memorable ones to list but my personal favourite's for driving games were the first 3 ridge racer & the first 3 NFS games. NFS 2 & 3 (Hot Pursuit) being particularly special to me. They both have music themed to fit the track which shifts in tempo & dynamics as the scenery changes. NFS 2 pushes this further as the tracks are more exotic loctions leading to very unique musical passages. A didgeridoo on the Austrailian track, German folk music in another, & the piece de resistance, Sitars, bongo's & other random percussion for the hardest track Nepal. Members of a Canadian rock Fusion band were hired to create the music for a bumch of EA games around that time including NFS, & it shows lol.

After that the series slowly lost its identity when they brought in the radio announcer in RR5, the boost, and later on damage. They need to ditch all that and get back to the basics (RR - R4) because that’s what made the series great.
