Fly Fishing the SAVAGE River & North Branch Potomac (Western MD)

  • As two of the top 100 Trout Streams in the United States (according to Trout Unlimited's listing), both the Savage River and North Branch Potomac are truly excellent Tailwater Fisheries in Western Maryland on the border with West Virginia. With cold and consistent year round temperatures, the Wild (and in the case of the N. Branch - stocked as well) Trout are abundant. As both streams are incredibly remote and surrounded by scenic mountains and forests, this is genuinely a special place. That said, both (at least for me) have been somewhat difficult to fish. Over the course of two days, we managed to catch 3 Wild Brown Trout on the Savage River while fly fishing and a nice healthy Stocked Rainbow and Wild Brown Trout on the North Branch Potomac River using my Spinning Reel and Single Barbless Hooks Trout Spinners (have I emphasized that enough?). With my yearly pilgrimage to this area now over, I cannot wait until the next time I have the opportunity to fish these exceptional Eastern US tailwater fisheries.

Fish those rivers all the time. Knew every spot that you were. My biggest trout in the Potomac were in the high 20 ‘s. I’ve had days where I got multiple 20 inchers.

Great meeting you at the north branch of the potomac. You are my kind of fisherman as well. I definitely need to try the savage in the future. That brown was awesome.

Great vid, the only nymph you need is a dark brown waltz. Try it as a dropper from a size 14/16 BWO or adams dry!

I wouldn't be surprised if that Rainbow you caught on the North Branch are stocked as fingerlings. There is a big difference between trout stocked at catchable size and those stocked as fingerlings. Most of the trout stocked in PA are catchables, so they have the beat up fins and the drab colors. I've caught Rainbows in the Yough in SW PA that almost looked wild, but were stocked as fingerlings. I think there are a few streams in PA where they stock fingerlings, mainly the bigger streams and rivers with lots of holdover potential like tailwater fisheries.

They have nets up at the Dam where they raise fish up that section you can't fish about from the dam to mile downstream they leave alone for fish to spawn!I have caught tons of small Rainbows and Browns was there while back net broke and all the fish abou 3-4in got out were everywhere! Also it's heavily Stocked from Md and West Va!

There is definitely wild rainbows in savage and north branch . Water stays well under 70 degrees year round and tons of rainbows are stocked so some make it to spawn . They haven’t stocked fingerling fish in over 10 years . Although the Maryland stocking lately has been very small catchable size fish . Wv puts in way better fish up in Barnum area .

Pro tip: Measure the opening of your net and use that as a gauge to know how big of a fish you're handling. That net opening is probably 18 or 19 inches in length.

Hey dude, I’m a fan of the channel. I have a drift boat and regularly float the nbranch,
Lehigh, lower Potomac. If you ever wanted to get together and get some more content I’d be glad to help you out. Not looking for a shoutout or to charge anything, I just enjoy sharing the experience that usually costs an arm and leg.

Dude that'd be awesome, I'm planning to hit the N. Branch Potomac again late this summer - let me know how we can link up. I've never been on a drift boat and that sounds great. Appreciate the offer.

Instead of going back in forth between dry and Nymph set up a dry dropper rig best of both worlds fish with small Nymph underneath dry is used as an indicator for small Nymph!
