A person has not lived life to its fullest until he has gotten Portuguese Man-O-War tentacles wrapped around him. An experience that you will never forget; 60 years in my case.

I had my last stung about 40 years ago, I think it is memories I could do without. It's truly excruciating, my mom used to wash it with vinegar too but only when we got home, they always acted like it was no big deal and that we all go through it. I once saw a woman step into a pool between rocks right into the middle of a few of them, they wrapped right around her ankle, I really felt sorry for her. In South Africa we call it Blue Bottles.

My father was in the military and he always told me when they open beaches do not go, wait 1 month and a week, because as soon as they open, there are fish there that came to the edge during winter, wait until they go back to the sea and you have a month to swim, after a month do not go to the beach because they come back to shore.

I snorkeled the reefs off the lower keys for years and many times when the man o wars were thick their tentacles would break up into small fragments over the coral. Swimming through these Portuguese smithereens was extremely uncomfortable and would leave welts all over your body and if these fragments got into your bathing suit it was painful to say the least.
