I love how Josh checks in with EJ regularly to make sure he's at the right place in the song, so that they come in and off together. Beautiful synchronicity!
I just love seeing how everyone is just so considerate and normal. Like the interviewer actually looks at Josh when she's speaking to him, not at the interpreter (which is often how conversations with deaf people go) and Josh and EJ's friendship is so evident and wonderful. I adore this production!
I didn't think it was possible to have a deaf person star in a musical, but damn was I wrong! This was so beautiful and I pray i get a chance to see this company!
Check out Spring Awakening (Deaf West Cast). It was on Broadway a few years back and they performed at the Tony Awards. Josh was in the cast. Phenomenal production!! (I flew to NY to see it!!)
I recently discovered this... Whole thing really. And I have watched the video of "Out There" so many times.... I have actually learned a majority of his signs and I plan on learning all of it. This "retelling" (he was deaf in the book so it isn't but whatever) is just a beautiful thing and it was a huge step in including people with hearing issues into more beautiful things like musicals and theatre.
a few things things. 1) joshua castille is officially the most beautiful man i've ever laid eyes upon. 2) i'm very curious as to how josh is able to know what the choir and such sounds like? because at one point he's talking about how amazing their choir is, and how amazing his "voice" is. does he have a hearing aid? i also heard deaf people can "feel" vibrations, or am i just crazy? anyone with hearing difficulties lmk! 3) does his "voice" count for speaking, or just singing? i was watching a sizzle reel, and i could have sworn josh was speaking when he said "it's nice, the two of us sitting."
Josh has some hearing with hearing aids. From what I've seen from interviews and behind the scenes clips he is very into music. He is able to speak quite clearly using speech, if he chooses.
He does have speech, and speaks really well, and clearly. There's a lot of clips of him speaking in relation to his work in 'Spring Awakening'. He's really sassy and fun. :)
I’ve seen the production clip countless times and sob every time. The way Josh transformers into quasimodo on stage is amazing. And watching this clip with no costumes or makeup and still be completely moving and convincing shows how great the performers are
Its impossible to express in words how much i love this version of HOND, i just cannot take my eyes off of Josh and just how bright and full of life his expressions are. The use of ASL in this performance promotes a level of affection for the original Victor Hugo story and you can also feel how personal this song is to Josh himself. The line "if i were in their skin, id treasure every instant" has a whole new meaning to it. On top of EJs incredible vocals, between the two of them they create the perfect Quasimodo
AGGGHHHHH I wish I had been able to see the show!!! I go to school in Seattle but it was during a time I couldn't make it and I will always regret that. ASL is something that has always interested me so much as I developed mild to moderate tinnitus and have trouble getting words out of my mouth. It's so gorgeous to watch and has much more obvious emotional connections than just talking. That being said I always have to wonder what kind of vocal tone of people who speak ASL have, and lo and behold Josh's laugh at 8:08 is the CUTEST THING I'VE EVER HEARD MY GOD. He is a talented cinnamon roll and I wish I could have seen him on stage.
I was blessed to see Joshua perform in Spring Awakening on Broadway twice, and meet him afterwards. He is such a sweetheart and so talented... I was so lucky, but I will always be so sad about the fact that I didn't get to see him in this.
OMG! This is my first time seeing song as ASL. I feel like this is a new dimention of prose that I've never seen before and I am so sad that I have never seen this before.
I hope to see their company 😭 im so late to know about this... This is so so so beautiful and touching. I haven't ever cried a lot for a performance, maybe just a tear or 2 of happiness, but this just made me bawl... I NEED MORE INCLUSION
How sweet, letting a deaf actor portray Quasimodo because in the original novel he went deaf from the bells, and having a singer to work with him almost if the story was told by the mind of a deaf person wishing they could sing out loud and the singer’s character is another gargoyle in his own way translates what Quasimodo is saying
If y’all think the signing in this is cool then you should watch him do Satisfied from Hamilton because it’s seriously the coolest thing I’ve ever seen
RavensDryad it’s a retelling in regards to how the stage musical was originally set. The original had all the actors/characters singing normally, including Quasimodo (who is deaf). In THIS version however, this show is told through sign language, and both the actor and character of quasimodo is deaf. So that’s why it’s a retelling
altho the one who played Quasi before Josh, Michael Arden, in a production at the Papermill incorporated his knowledge of sign language into his performance after finding out that Quasi was originally deaf
I gotta say, not showing the signs clearly and then not captioning the video is pretty low key ableist considering what you are featuring is a Deaf performance
I love how Josh checks in with EJ regularly to make sure he's at the right place in the song, so that they come in and off together. Beautiful synchronicity!
me too
Josh's signing is the most memorising thing I've ever seen
Addison Clark Hello again! 😊
his expressions are also on point
RIGHT he's so incredible
Right
.. mesmerizing?
I just love seeing how everyone is just so considerate and normal. Like the interviewer actually looks at Josh when she's speaking to him, not at the interpreter (which is often how conversations with deaf people go) and Josh and EJ's friendship is so evident and wonderful. I adore this production!
My boyfriend is deaf and he loves this musical so we went to see it and it was amazing josh and E.J. really brought the character to life.
These two have some really cool connection.
when you have to decide between josh and michael arden and you just. can’t
They both are brilliant.
I didn't think it was possible to have a deaf person star in a musical, but damn was I wrong! This was so beautiful and I pray i get a chance to see this company!
the last production josh was in was on broadway and half of the cast was deaf and all of the cast signed all of their lines lmao
@@em-up2om Well I didn't know that so..
@@marisp2588 There's a bootleg online with subtitles. Go watch it! : D
@@xxdarkknight420xx2 Sweet! I will definitely check it out

THOSE TWO ARE THE ABSOLUTE CUTEST I CANT
This is beautiful. Wherever they are, Victor Hugo and Lon Chaney were made proud by this.
Especially Lon Chaney :D

yeah, almost right after this vid i did some research & i saw he uses a hearing aid and can speak clearly!!
He does have speech, and speaks really well, and clearly. There's a lot of clips of him speaking in relation to his work in 'Spring Awakening'. He's really sassy and fun. :)
almost right after this comment i found a vid of him doing a testimonial about his hearing aid! he does seem like a ball to be around :)
I love that they choose super attractive people to play Quasi. The irony
I could never sing Out There in this scenario. I would burst into tears every 15 seconds.
I’ve seen the production clip countless times and sob every time. The way Josh transformers into quasimodo on stage is amazing. And watching this clip with no costumes or makeup and still be completely moving and convincing shows how great the performers are

Watched made of Stone and he is perfect as quasimodo I love the extra element him signing adds especially since quasi is deaf in the book

Rip josh's pants the entire time.

I was so lucky, but I will always be so sad about the fact that I didn't get to see him in this.
I don't know why, but this is making me cry.😭
It is currently 2 am and I'm crying
josh's expressios alone are enough to give me chills
OMG! This is my first time seeing song as ASL. I feel like this is a new dimention of prose that I've never seen before and I am so sad that I have never seen this before.
I'm dying for this! I want to see this love so bad! This truly changes this character for me forever.
It would be so cool to learn how to sign this song 😍
they both so wonderful!!!!! I love josh!
This is so absolutely amazing and beautiful! Such a wonderful performance! Absolutely AMAZING!!!!!
I’m living for Joshs nails!!!!
Also is that a piercing at 1:14 or is it his hearing aid I can’t tell
Leah Thai A piercing 🙂
I see a hearing aid on left ear
Leah Thai and I think he has piercings too
So the black circle is a piercing and he has a nude color hearing aid and clear ear molds..
A piercing and stunning nails!
This is soooo awesome!
I hope to see their company 😭 im so late to know about this... This is so so so beautiful and touching. I haven't ever cried a lot for a performance, maybe just a tear or 2 of happiness, but this just made me bawl... I NEED MORE INCLUSION
im amazed how his difficulty doesn't let his passion stop him from doing what he likes and being normal, he's is such an inspiration
I hope to see more like this ❤️
That was so amazing!!!
Im crying i love this so much
There both adorable too god bless them.
What I would give to see this show

So cool and cute 😊❤
I might have cried a bit at that now...
If y’all think the signing in this is cool then you should watch him do Satisfied from Hamilton because it’s seriously the coolest thing I’ve ever seen

He was deaf in the book so it's not a retelling???

Mmmn, I feel like it's just gone and added a lot more depth rather than a retelling but I get what you mean.
RavensDryad ahh ok lol. I coulda just said that instead of typing a whole paragraph haha
altho the one who played Quasi before Josh, Michael Arden, in a production at the Papermill incorporated his knowledge of sign language into his performance after finding out that Quasi was originally deaf
You are kind of right but originally he was deaf because of the Bells so he could therefore still talk because he knew how already.
Is this in the original key? What key is it in?
Original key.
I think it’s slightly different from the Disney movie but same key
Lucy Lucy her
I gotta say, not showing the signs clearly and then not captioning the video is pretty low key ableist considering what you are featuring is a Deaf performance
She literally asked deaf person how are they. I’m dead
I know they have an interpreter.
