I hope your dog has learned something. It is excellent that you do the grand introduction of everyday Japanese life here in Japan, as well as introducing old cameras.

The top and bottom plates are made of brass. If you find a heavily used one you'll see the brass coming through the worn edges.
It is a beautiful camera and I couldn't resist picking one up after seeing it in one single article.

Maybe the last generation has plastic bottom plates. But yes most of the bottom plates are metal/brass.
Top covers are a kind of metallized plastic.
And in the beginning of the production even the battery cover was made out of metal. I have an early one that has that.

Came for the camera, stayed for the story.
The story of younger days gear lusting always make me feel wholesome.
Honest opinion is always the best sell point, i love it and keep up the good work.

I also have an A-1 with the 35-70mm FD lens. It's also fitted with the Canon motor drive MA. FYI, "Fix old cameras" on CZcams has a video about fixing the "Canon Squeal ". Best of luck, Tom USA.

Love these A1s ... I have two with motor drives ... love the sound and everything about them ... also there are adapters for various lens so you can fit lens other than FD type if you want to

I think I oiled mine from underneath the bottom plate and using an oil that was delivered through a long needle, I can't recall, but it worked fine and still does. Now the light seals are what I have to deal with now.

Ah. Great video and story. The only Canon I've ever owned is the A-1 and I *still love it. I recently purchased a 35-70 macro, which is turning out to be quite fun. Also in my stable is a 50mm 1.4. Quite the mainstay. Anyway, thx for the great video. 👍

The Canon A1 uses black painted brass top and bottom covers. It is only the other A-series models that use the plastic covers.

Which would you recommend between this camera and Olympus OM-1, sir?

I just got one, and I love it... but changing the battery and putting the screw cover back on is really tricky and a totally unpleasant chore! I've been trying for over an hour, and still no luck!

I like all the anecdotes. Specially when it's about comics. 😀

The lack of a metered manual mode made the A-1 and other Canon autoexposure SLRs clunky to use. Canon presumably thought that users would just only use autoexposure.

Sometimes he takes a couple of days to list the camera after posting the video, sometimes the camera of the video is part of his collection and wont be for sale, but thats rare.
