How to make a vocal booth at home (5 min to set up)

- How to build a DIY vocal booth at home for recording good vocals. You only need a blanket/duvet and a pair of acoustic walls.
Alternatively you can hang blankets on a door and create a space where the sound will not be reflected. The most important thing is to have something to absorb the sound in front of you and behind you.
All the things in the video can be bought at Thomann:
- Acoustic walls: www.thomann.de/dk/clearsonic_...
- Microphone: www.thomann.de/dk/neumann_tlm...
- Microphone tripod: www.thomann.de/dk/km_210-2.htm - Hudba
A low budget solution for beginner artists is a closet with clothes in it!!
Not only is it considered free (given you already own a closet and some clothes), but it doesnt take extra storage. Hang blankets or curtains over any doors/opened space (maybe you dont have a door and have an archway instead for example), and if the floor isnt carpet, cover that with blankets too! It may sound crazy, but it gives the same affect when theres a budget.
Unfortunately, a big issue with this setup is vocalists cant always stand up when singing due to shelving or general closet layout. If its too constricting, it can always be the temporary solution until you can upgraded.
Other than that, hope this helps!! 😁
Thank you for sharing! I’m sure this is Very helpful to a lot of new artists
Thank you ! I have a big ass closet and I’ve been thinking about just recording in there
That will work as well!@@MIXXBABII
You come across like a hater. Sad
@shan5445 ? I'm all for dream set ups like the one shown, but not everybody has money. Absolutely no hate. Just a possible start up solution.
FYI everyone, this set up is about $3,000 to $4,000 🥵
The panels and mic and everything yes, but you can totally make great vocals with less expensive equipment! I made these purchases as a long term investment for myself and my career :)
😂
Can't even find similar walls for cheap, that's all I needed...walls😢
Every vocalist needs a great mic. In this case a TLM103 which costs over a grand.....great investment....
@@christine_bulow
FYI everyone, there's a MUCH cheaper version of this that involves a "skeleton" made from PVC tubing and ceiling/walls made from a single mover's blanket. Whole booth should be less than $200.
Even a thin blanket over the top will do wonders, brilliant touch. If you can swing it, a second wall behind you, 3-4 inches of thickness is MAGIC, especially with mixing. Cool thing with that is you can move the wall behind you as far back as you need to control the "openess" of your sound, I personally start with the dampening 4ft behind me and move it back if it comes through boxing, bassy, etc. Sometimes purely tight clean takes aren't what the track needs. This wall is far better than gimmicky vocal shields.
Yes you are correct! And Thanks for all the good tips☺️ I Also often feel Like my vocals Can sound too enclosed
He's right.
I wish that the wall came with thiccness options. Anyone know where to get this btw?
Vocal shields actually work, though, but it depends on your environment.
What are these walls “technically” called?
Great microphone, but those panels, or some kind of room treatment, is the real secret here. You could pair those panels (and another, suspended from the ceiling to allow for taller people under it) and a $150 Audio Technica AT2035 and it would sound incredibly professional. That mic you have is a lot of people’s “dream microphone.”
Show some details of the panels you are using for everybody.
Great setup.
Closet + blanket = the best isolation
Yes that's a solid solution!!
I normally just go in the shed since it’s compacted inside with tools and things to block out the surrounding
Ahh that works as well
I did that once. I got scabies 😃

Glad to see someone not using those silly shrouds. Anyone using a dynamic and/or cardioid mic is spending a lot more than those help the recording quality
That makes no sense. Dynamics are often cheaper than condensers
@@Davo198 I think you misunderstood my comment. I'm saying that the shroud costs more than a lot of dynamic microphones and has basically no benefit (bc dynamics aren't very sensitive to room noise anyway). That vs a spending that money on a condenser, which would be very noticeably more detailed but actually needs the room isolation (which, again, the shrouds do NOTHING for)
Thank you for sharing these helpful tips. Great idea to do. This provides good sound quality and is cost effective . 💖🌟👏🏼💖🌟👏🏼💖🌟👏🏼

The floor is still going to make it into your recording when doing that, also the walls are way to close to both you and your mic, you still have the reflections, they just happen faster.

Thank you for your idea, i have made some vocal booths but were strugling finding the way to make them stand (should i buy tropid for each 4 of them? i thought) my are 4 units 1 mt tall for 50 cm, since the top of them must be at 2 mt i think the best option is to make them some foot and they will be portable as yours .
If you have 4 seperate walls then tropids might be a good idea, because mine are only two double folded panels. Alternatively you can find a corner in your home and place two of your walls there, and then you only need two tropids? Sorry for the late response, I overlooked your comment

Bonus points for using FL studio😂
Who can suggest where to get the fabric and which one?
I prefer to mix out in post. I cannot stand the feeling of being closed in like that. Even in some pro studios. I like the live sound approach that people used in the 50s
I totally get it if it's a stylistic choice
This is a little harder for those of us who are tall, though I guess you can mount it all on some Ikea boxes etc.
Yes you will have to place the acoustic walls one something, but it makes the setup a bit more complicated
Damn the 103? Pops hooked it up
Yes, i prioritized my money on it 2 years ago. The best investment
No, just use software in 2024. OBS is free and it cuts out all room noise. That Neumann mic is still bringing in every noise for 2 houses down the road with that set up.

We actually have a lot of of the same equipment as far as the KRKs the Mac but I have a MPC and a MPK keyboard but honestly, none of that matters when it comes to making music, because there are so many great keyboards and equipment out there, the only thing that really matters is your portable booth and one of my microphones is the TLM 103 and I have a couple more but I wanna know how much did it cost you to make the booth. I use mogami gold chords for everything but I love your portable booth and would love to know the price minus the microphone and everything else because I have everything else😊

How well do those walls work, in terms of sound dampening, compared to a closet full of clothes, blankets, and foam?
If you have a closet where you are able to stand inside it, then that will be as good I believe. But many people forget to have sound dampening behind themselves and this is where these acoustic walls are really effective :-)
@christine_bulow Hey Christine, great video and setup :) Im looking at getting these, but i am 6 ft tall so would be peering over the top. How can you record vocals and use your daw at the same time? 😮
When I record vocals by myself, I run back and forth between the daw and the booth. No ideal aha. But otherwise my producer will be there.
So did you need to buy 2 of these jointed wall panels? I see one goes for $205 but am guessing you had to spend twice in order to make the booth? Thanks!

@@christine_bulow no definitely not! how do you like the quality you’re getting? I also use a TLM103 with an iso vox 2. But the acoustics are so dead and muffled that it’s hard to get a natural recording :/ Way too much low end build up
