How lucky are we as college basketball fans to get to see a matchup like this?? #1 offense vs #1 defense.
Going to be fun!
So lucky big 10 champs vs big 12 champs
Usually the team that is more balanced wins these matchups. Iowa state has the #1 defense and roughly 50th ranked offense. Illinois has the #1 offense and roughly 90th ranked defense. Iowa State will likely win.
Or how unlucky cause they're starting this game after 10 ET
Alabama has the #1 offense buddy
Excellent analysis hope Illinois and TSJ move the ball 🏀
Thanks!
Iowa state has 8 guys that can start and play defense. Foul trouble isn't a concern. If Illinois is hot-hitting 3s. That will be Iowa States cryptanite. If Illinois turns the ball over, ISU scores with fast break turnovers. This will be a great game to watch.
They may have 8 guys that can play defense, but the guards aren’t nearly good enough to win without Gilbert or Lipsey out there.
@@Nathan-ye5jni mean yeah but the same principle works for Illinois
@@Nathan-ye5jnliterally any team in college basketball 😂
@@Swiftyy68 I wasn't the one that claimed there were 8 players that could start for ISU. There aren't 8 players with no drop off on ISU.
You scenarios pit against each other one that will probably happen and one far less likely to happen. Iowa State is great at forcing turnovers and Illinois can be very turnovers prone. I find that scenario happening more likely than Illinois going stupid from 3 against the best defense in the country.
No mention that every starter on Illinois is 6’6” plus. With Dainja coming off the bench. Plus TSJ is an unstoppable force in transition.
I mentioned TSJ at the end, spent a couple minutes talking about him specifically in transition. Didn’t hit on Dainja but could see him having a big game again
Yes you did mention TSJ. My point was around his latest scoring binge. Also, I believe ILL will present size challenges along with Dainja and the many looks their roster provides. Great breakdown.
Great video. Appreciate the thorough analysis.
Thanks!
I want to see Illinois win this one because I think they are one of the only teams in the tournament that can actually go get UConn on any given night. Not sure anyone else can score with them. That’d be an exciting elite 8 game.
Purdue would be the one other team that I think could maybe keep up, but I agree. Illinois vs UConn would be a very fun matchup
Great stuff. This guy knows ball!
Thanks!
This is great stuff, thanks
Excellent analysis. Thanks.
Thanks!
Thanks for the analysis
No problem!
Illinois has had big turnover problems in the past but the last couple years they have really shook that reputation. I don't foresee it being too significant in this game anyways, since Illinois' transition defense is conisistently terrible because of the boards strategy. Iowa State will certainly get theirs on a few of those opportunities, but I don't think there will be that many. I think most of this game from the Illinois perspective comes down to can Domask continue to facilitate when doubled up, can the spot up shooters like Goode hit their 3's, and can Dainja continue his recent hot streak crashing the paint.
Dainja is an interesting guy. I didn’t talk too much about him in the video, but will be interesting to see if he could have another big game
If I'm Illinois I am extremely scared about turnovers. Iowa State forces the most turnovers in the country and constantly force 17-20 a game while getting 20 pts off of turnovers. Illinois hasn't seen anything like it before.
@rjonmars, well Illinois only had 11 turnovers so wrong there! From what I saw, Illinois wasn’t scared of ISU at all. If anything, ISU was scared of Illinois given their shitty shot selection.
Hason Ward might have 10 dunks in this game.
@drew1693, nope, like most of ISU, Ward was no factor fouling out in 10 min and scoring a big fat zero points…lol!
He had zero. 10 less than 10 dunks.
the math checks out.@@poopoomangione
Good point about making the skip pass out of traps. Which is something domask and illinois excel at. Watching this makes me think IL will get some good looks from 3 or open driving lanes. If IL makes the extra pass and has good shot selection, I like our chances.
That said, I don't really want to get into a 3 point shootout with IS, they have deadly shooters. Which is where Brad MUST insert Dainja and run the ball through him. If IL find themselves losing and the game in danger...they must fight back with the author of such challenges and introduce IS to the dainjer zone. But will stupid UW do it? Will he put them in the dainja zone? Sigh. I've been so disappointed in many games where DD sat and IL lost. C'MON BRAD GET DAINJA EXTENDED MINUTES...PLEASE!!!!!
So, on posting up...your examples use two bigs. If ISU doubles Domask, there won't be another Illini under the basket, it'll be an ISO. So, you will have a shooter or cutter open. I think ISU will limit Domask, but open opportunities for Guerrier and Rodgers. Hawkins is going to have open shots. If he can knock them down, ISU may have to change up their defense. Trapping Hawkins with small guards isn't going to work. If Illinois can get into transition, ISU is going to have to be careful keeping their guards out of foul trouble. It doesn't look like ISU has any depth at the guard position. ISU has a lot of big forwards. Surprisingly, they don't dominate the boards.
Yeah the post trap *can* open up shots for others because they are going to double Domask. Guys just have to put themselves in the open spots so Domask can see them. Easier said than done against this Iowa State defense though
ISU uses the philosophy of, putting their best foot forward defensively and just look for general trends of the opposing offense. They don’t change their defense. They also have a couple guards for depth but foul trouble is can always be an issue but typically not much of an issue with ISU guards. More of an issue with their bigs. It’ll be interesting to see if ISU will throw in a zone/man switch style defense into the mix every so often to give the offense a different look. They will do this on occasion to disrupt an offenses flow but will go back to their gritty defense right after. It’ll be a great game and if Illinois gives up midrange shots, look for Milan to drop 20. He is very similar to a cross between Dirk and Bird in terms of shot style. Gonna be a fun one and probably fast paced!
Iowa State is the best defense in the country. Illinois is the #1 offense in the country but a lot of that comes from transition. All Iowa State needs to do is limit Illinois in transition. Illinois isn't going to do anything to make Iowa State have to change their half court defense. A lot of Illinois halfcourt offense is Domask backing down and as this video covered, Iowa State has a good plan and great execution of that very scenario.
If Iowa State can't contain TSJ or the offense, Illinois could walk away with this if they play their game
I just said the same thing.
As a cyclone fan. I don’t know who the heck is Terence Shannon jr but people tell me he’s good and we’re might lose because of him, but go clones
The best thing about ISU’s defense and what I think can make the difference here is that their 1 can legitimately guard a 5 if he needs to and their 5 can guard a 1
In the first 2 ISU trap clips the opponent had a big just hanging out in the lane allowing his Guy to help ant the Illini has Hawkins that will not be in the Lane.
If Rodgers is in he’d be in that spot most likely
When Illinois goes 5 out, then yes Hawkins can be space on the perimeter. Houston I assume would adjust just by playing the gaps out there
Excited to watch this one as a Wisconsinite! We have Domask and Milan going. My prediction: Illinois by 5-10.
UConn got the shaft of all shafts. 3 conference champs in their region and they’re the number one overall seed. If they go on to repeat that would an even bigger accomplishment than last year.
The seeding definitely was unfortunate, but how the tournament has played out, they’ll have one of the easier paths I’d say. 16 seed/injured Northwestern team/San Diego State isn’t too bad of a path. Obviously either Illinois or Iowa State would be tough but almost everyone would have to play a tough team then
Oh Whatever. Isn't half their roster made of SportsCenter anchors out in Bristol? Oh I'm sure ESPN would love for them to win
One more point....So you got Dan Hurley this Dan Hurley that. Dan Hurley wasn't no Scott Skiles or John Stockton but lets just give Dan Hurley all the Praise in the world
Or Domask can have a hot night with his turnaround fadeaway jumper, then he doesn't have to always kick-out during a double team.
True
do tennessee v creighton next !
Iowa State fans - Let them play
Illinois fans - That’s a foul
Officials - TBD
Depends if Green is referring.
Stripes are great.
Iowa State = constant fouling
Illinois = missing free throws
This comment section is heavy Illinois bias 😂
I am a Big Ten channel to be fair
From my heart.., I really think Illini can get hot, and YES, take Uconn.. its gonna be brutal but that's when they shine
@@randpherigo9724but defense wins championships tho
@davidschmid3821, well Illinois led the entire game and if they had made FT at their season average, it would have been a double digit win. So yes, heavy Illinois bias for a reason.

TERRENCE SHANNON JR
Illini definitely needs to rebound
Should be a great game between 2 evenly matched teams. Unfortunately, the winner gets UConn…….and then they get to go home.
now now... Illini got this.. they just gotta want it
Hawkins can have a great game if he is on. Hawkins Demast Shannon need to step up with help from DAINJA Rodgers Guierre and Goode
Illinois better not let Dumask tire out. If he can't bring ball up have Shannon or Rodgers bring up. If Illinois makes adjustments and limit turnovers I think will win
So you had some great things to say but you have to understand Iowa state has 10 guys that can score. If we stop “booty ball” Iowa state dominates like they did in big 12 championship.
Not discrediting Iowa State at all, but Illinois is far more than just Marcus Domask. Shannon is liable to go for 30 any night. Hawkins has had big games. They have other dudes that can score. Will they? We’ll see but just stopping one factor of the offense doesn’t immediately shut this offense down
@RawlingsRedsox00, well ISU didn’t dominate in any stat except for tears cried…..
Iowa State scores 69ppg 🫠 they clearly don’t have 10 people who can score. Their leading scorer averages like 12ppg.
Anyway, ISU lost.
I'd like to see shannon dunk over Bob Hurley. lol
Sorry Dan. lol
Turnovers. If Illini limit turnovers we win, if we dont we won't. Simple.
Illinois is 2-6 when facing top 25 defenses. Iowa state is top 5 lol. If Iowa State gets out to a good start offensively, they will win no doubt.
@HP-es8ek, puleez, ISU never even had a lead for even one second. Wisconsin was better than ISU….🙄
@@donrichter3523 no Wisconsin isn’t better lol. ISU shot the second worst % all season and still somehow only lost by 3. That speaks volumes. They stared off too slow. They’ll be back next year.
I toke Iowa to go to top 2 am I cooked
Not for sure. Should be a good game
If illinois turnovers are high then iowa state will win
Most likely true
The same can be said for almost every game for almost every team.
@@Shan_Coxand in any sport lol
@@mikesul16 and on every planet in the solar system. :)
If Illinois can hit enough 3s, i think it'll keep them in the game even if they turn it over a lot. Baylor beat Iowa St turning it over 20 times compared to their 11. The key was Baylor shot 12-23 from 3pt range that game. 70-68 final. Iowa St's offense typically isnt good enough to completely pull away on its own
An absolute travesty if Dain Dainja doesn’t get 20 to 25 minutes in this game. BU has hamstrung his minutes because of poor defensive effort. That being said…Illinois as a whole hasn’t played very good defense. Just let the kid play.
dont be fooled, isu by 12
@cashmoneyt3866, don’t worry, we weren’t fooled, ISU are always a bunch of pansies, never once had a lead…hahaha!!
Winner will get blasted by UConn.
Nah either team will match up well actually
Iowa state has been shooting phenomenal from 3 and Illinois has been hot on offense, whoever plays UConn will give them a good fight
Gotta love UConn fans. Come to watch a breakdown of an Iowa State/Illinois game just to say this.
@@Shan_Cox Mildly concerned no doubt! ..lol Were gonna separate the men from the boys.. Illini by 10., maybe less but i highly doubt it
Doesn't matter on paper, what matters is when the games played.
