From 1966 to 1989 The South African Defense Force (SADF) fought a war on the border between Angola and South West Africa (today known as Namibia). This 23 year conflict is today referred to as the Forgotten War.
The 'Kaplyn' (cutline) was a thin strip of land cleared of any growth. This was the border.
During this period every single white South African son was forced, through the Conscript System, to serve a minimum of two years as soon as they left school. A total of 715 South African Soldiers gave their lives to protect their country.
Footage and photos courtesy of the SANDF Archive and Veterans.
    Translated lyrics to Kaplyn:
    Between bushes and trees.
Between borders where we all were killed.
But at 18 we were all lost.
    How could we understand.
    And for whom we live.
For God alone knows what we live for.
Because at 18 we all just wanted to live.
Just one shot and your life was over.
    Are you calling to me?
Are you calling me back to the "Border" my friend?
Through the years, the world turned.
When we were young, how would we have imagined this.
    Are you looking for me?
Looking for me in the dust and your blood?
You said you could hear God call you.
    Then it was all over.
    After all these years.
Long lost, we suffer under our deeds.
With the bodies of soldiers my borders drawn like scars.
    How can we understand?
For that bush eats your tracks.
In the dark bush as brothers and words.
In the dark together we prayed for a tomorrow.
Just one shot and your life was over.
    Are you calling to me?
Are you calling me back to the "Border" my friend?
Through the years, the world turned.
When we were young, how would we have imagined this.
    Where are you now?
Is you name retained on our walls?
You were never honored and nobody will now.
Write about your life and what you wanted.
And at those walls I stand for hours.
But where is your name now my friend?
    For understand, your soldiers perish.
Without reason they carry the blame.
And at those walls I stand for hours.

I am an American veteran who served during the Vietnam War era, even though I wasn't in combat itself. I breaks my heart to think how quickly our veterans and yours are forgotten and sometimes looked upon as of no impotance. Now, in America, at least, we veterans have more support from the general public. Hope your veterans get the credit they also deserve, regardless of politics. Found the video very moving.

      4 years late but nevertheless.
We are more the same than you think. We have always had the same enemies. We both hate dictatorial government. We both have a strong independent pioneer spirit. We both love the wide open spaces. You make jerky, we make biltong. You make barbecues, we make braais. We both love sports with oval balls. We are the last two nations that still honor God.
Our only differences are, you beat the British, we lost. You are still a mighty nation. We have been consigned to the pages of history.

This is a wonderful tribute to courageous men who fought so bravely for their country and were a credit to the SADF. As a Rhodesian (partly of South African descent) I also want to pay tribute to members of the SADF who fought side by side with Rhodesia's armed forces in the 1960s and 70s. For example, three members of the SAAF lost their lives in September 1979 when their Puma helicopter was shot down during a joint SADF/Rhodesian operation against terrorist bases in neighbouring Mozambique. Alles van die Beste. Baie dankie, Bok.

I don't know if you are still on here..your comment is quite a few years old, but thought I'd reply anyway. There is a a very special respectful bond between us us Saffas and you Kiwi's (And Ausies, if I might add). The Southern Hemisphere 'Colonies'. Our cultures and lifestyles are similar..and I am not even going to mention our passion for rugby. Myself and my NZ mate always cause chaos when we walk into a pub here in London wearing our Springbok and All Black jerseys..even if we are playing a game against each other...the punters in the pub just cannot comprehend that! Most of them actually feel a bit offish to be honest..especially if England is playing one of us. Kiwi's, Saffas and Aussies Rule..

At 3.40 is Charlie section platoon 2, Alpha Co. 4 SAI, During operation Hooper, somewhere around Quito Cannavale. Ironically all but one of them English speaking. Rip David Hobbs and Mark van Skulkwyk. Mark was only 18 in this photo, the youngest in our platoon, by then we were all combat veterans and were in the field for 4 months on the front at Cuito Cannavale. During this period we would be subject to mig bombardment daily.

The is a lot of divisions in our country where each and every race wants to be the best and it causing us not to move forward
First thing we lack is respect for another and our differences and cultures
We need to learn to stop criticising each other we can use the energy to build and make South Africa great again regardless of everything that is happening

Yes, we made mistakes, big ones at that. Today however, I will not get in bar fight for all of South African soil, after trying to rectify the past, it was all taken for granted and now there is nothing left and still getting worse.

Best thing for South Africa at the end of apartheid would have been for the homelands to keep their governments, but to become part of a Federation, like the US. Every State has its own government so they can listen to the concerns of the local people. Better separation of powers, more power to the provinces. Now, people in Bop and Venda want to secede because the provincial authorities ignore them. Every people (volk) has a right to self determination and the ANC is immorally denying them this.

I realise that many people viewing this video does not speak or understand Afrikaans. So here are the lyrics (translated) and a brief explanation of what the Kaplyn and the Bush is:
    - Kaplyn - a strip of sand, completely cleared of any vegetation and heavily mined (landmines). This was the border between Angola & South West Africa (Namibia).
    - The Bush - our war was fought is the dense African bush. A dry, harsh, unforgiving place, with almost every plant, shrub and bush covered in thorns.

The significance of the kaplyn (apart from cultural influences), was it had no local population in it. There used to be a kill-on-sight rule in the Jati, (by my time, it was no longer strictly enforced). The Jati was a critical feature of hot pursuit (hakkejag) operations - our race was always to catch up with the fleeing terrorists before they could cross into the shallow external region of Angola. That was never a guarantee of complete safety for them - we would frequently cross over as well.

So sad there is no Suid Afrika that it was before- As far as I can understand those soldiers are practically forgotten by contemporary authorities ( not by relatives if any). Sorry, but my country was at SWAPO side, together with Cuba,.At that time we had Afghanistan and thousands of our 18-19 year old boys, who were sent to war by the Kremlin rulers for some political reasons, known only to them, were killed, are forgotten now too. Only grave stones left.
