Biking Ohio: The Kokosing Gap Trail -- Tunnels, Trains & Trestles Await!

- Definitely a trail with a lot to see. Travel through a landscape of ravines and farmland, while you travel along the Kokosing River. The 13.5 mile trail runs between Mount Vernon and Danville, OH. Don't miss the Howard Tunnel -- an arched stone passage, or the two railroad bridges, more than 250' long. Take a minute in Gambier to marvel at an old locomotive and a bright-red wood caboose. Gambier is also home to Kenyon College and the Brown Family Environmental Center -- where you can take a break from the trail and visit the butterfly garden. This ride took place on August 24, 2022.
This trail is part of the Ohio to Erie Trail and the Great American Rail Trail.

@garyseckel295 I'm just moved to be closer to my folks in the dayton-nati area and ordered my first bike in 16 years. Picked up a belt drive Continuum Onyx by Priority and I plan to ride as much as I can. Last time I was here, I was a kid and didn't live near any of the trails. I think Loveland and Morrow are going to be great trailheads for me. I've just got to come up with a Doggie trailer solution because my German shepherd service dog gets tired after about 10 miles.

Hi. Funny you ask..... We have been looking at a European River Cruise in which ebiking is part of the package. We don't have time to do that this year, but it may be on the agenda next year.

Can you please do 200 to 300 rail trails to show show other seniors spots on the trail to stay overnight and eat ! Last year my wife @ I bought Ebikes after watching all your videos !
Hi Tony, I'm not sure I understand what you are asking -- you want double the amount of videos? We are working on it as fast as we can. We plan to get more rides/year in once we both retire in the next few months. Others have asked about where we stay so we will focus more on that aspect with the rides we take in 2023. Thanks for the feedback.
@@Adventuresonebikes 200 -300 mile rail trail trip over a single ride. We are interested in interstate travel on rail trails. Like the idea of biking multiple days then having to ride a train or lift the bikes back to the parked car , otherwise you would have to ride a long trail then turn around and go back.
@@tonysmith5507 Thanks for clarifying. Not sure if you’ve checked out our Great Allegheny Passage video. We went from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, MD - 150 miles over 3 days and stayed at B&B’s along the way - got transport back to PIT. We also have a short video on how to plan for that ride. We have been looking at the Katy Trail as a multi-day ride, but it isn’t on our agenda for this year.
That looks like a gorgeous trail, and the bridges or trestles, remind me of the ones that cross over Pine Creek, on the Pine Creek Trail in the Grand Canyon of Pa. Do you know which trailhead begins at mile marker 0 of the trail? I like that it's paved the entire way, instead of the usual limestone found on a lot of other trails, although some of the ones in western Pennsylvania where I live, like the Allegheny River Trail near Franklin, Pa., can have some pretty rough spots, due to the tree roots causing buckling of the surface. Does any sections of this trail, have any issues of this type? Which trailhead did you begin your ride from?
If you go by the way TrailLink describes the trail -- Mile 0 is in Mt. Vernon. We started in Danville and rode the opposite direction to Mt. Vernon because we were coming off of the Mohican Trail -- it's only 4 miles long, but we wanted to ride to the Bridge of Dreams (might make that into a CZcams Short). I can't recall noticing any rough spots. I think it was pretty well maintained. Thanks for watching. We hope to "see" you on our next adventure.
I always enjoy your low key videos. Can you very roughly estimate an average speed along the trail? There are times when you seem to be moving pretty fast, somewhere between 15-20 mph. Is that right?
Our average speed is between 10-13 MPH. The times when we appear to be moving fast are due to the magic of editing -- and speeding up the video. We would never go 20 MPH on any trail -- way to dangerous for both us and any other trail users. We always try to be as polite and considerate of others as we can. Thanks for your comments.

Do you guys use bike apps? If so which one?
We use the Rails to Trails Conservancy app -- TrailLink. I don't have it running while on the ride, but have been known to stop and check where we are on occasion. It does require a subscription, but I think it's more than worth it; and it supports a great cause -- trail growth and advocacy.

Do you just ride both ways?
Yes, we do just ride both ways on many of the trails. That does limit how far we can go in a trip, but we haven’t figured out another way for most of these shorter trails.
