    As a veterinary professional, I really enjoyed your video and your nutritional information. Only one minor correction that I think you would like to know: dogs are omnivores not carnivores. Their intestinal tract is actually longer than obligatory carnivores like cats but shorter than an herbivore's tract like a sheep or horse. That extra length allows them to process plant material as well as meat. There have even been studies of wolves in the wild that have found that they regularly eat plants, berries, and grains growing wild in addition to the plant material in their prey's stomach. You're absolutely right that meat should be the # 1 ingredient in your dog food, but vegetables and a small amount of carbohydrates are also important for dogs. Their carbohydrate requirement is much lower than what is in most dog foods, but some whole grain ingredient is important for fiber and digestion. But yes most dog food companies use carbohydrates as cheap fillers (and way too much of it) and if it's not a whole grain variety it does not have any nutritional value. Thank you for all the research you put into this video! : ) ♥️ And I love the way you broke down how each type of food is processed!

      @LC what are your thoughts on Stella and Chewy’s wholesome grains? 🐶😃

    • @LC-1748
      @LC-1748 Před 2 lety +14

      @@user-ew3sp1hl6q Did you have a specific formula (flavor) in mind? Each recipe has different ingredients... If your sweet dog has any health concerns your vet can help you pick a diet tailored to his/her needs. And the first thing I ask a client when they want a food recommendation is what brand they are partial to. We can often look through the ingredients of different recipes to find one that their pet likes and avoids ingredients we know the pet is sensitive to. Also be aware of brands who's recipes include all life stages. Puppies, adults, and senior dogs all have different dietary requirements and their food should reflect that. I hope that helps. : ) I'm sorry if this answer wasn't specific enough, that brand makes several varieties of dog food. They seem to have quality ingredients, and I like that they are pea and lentil free for the ones I saw. Some studies have suggested that peas and lentils can contribute to canine heart disease (DCM). However I am also concerned that the ones I saw were for all life stages... Unfortunately without knowing the pet requiring the food it's difficult to make a recommendation. But during your next vet visit don't be shy to bring a bag of dog food (or the label) and ask the vet or a knowledgeable technician if they think these ingredients are right for your pet or if they recommend something else. Most staff are happy to give a recommendation and tell you what they fed their pets. : ) And believe me, anyone in the veterinary field learns quickly which foods create problems and which foods have a positive affect. As a pet parent it's wonderful that you are your pet's advocate and you take their food choices seriously. I'm sure you'll make a good decision for you baby. : )
      Edit: after doing more research, I did find that many of their recipes have specific life stages. I'm by no means saying I think it's a bad food. I like many of their key ingredients. Just check with your vet to be sure and check any labels for life stage to make sure it fits your dog's stage. : )

      @@maureenpiccirillo1586 I'm not against raw feeding at all. I fed my own dog a freeze dried food that I rehydrated before feeding until recently in his old age (he's 13) he now requires a prescription diet. I don't understand why you thought I would be against raw food... I'm just cautious of any food cooked or raw that is labeled for all life stages. People have to live with their pet, and with the decisions they make about their pet's diet. Unless it's obviously harmful I don't try to sway owners either way. I offer the pros and cons of each diet and help them come to an informed decision. After all, they are also the ones paying for their pet's food. So I don't pressure them into foods that are not in their budget. It's all a balance of their pet's health, the owner's budget, the owners comfort zone and preferences, and the pet's preferences. : )

What i love about this guide czcams.com/users/postUgkxKkYeOoCV_w2vPX0CSyVWkhew2c4FYk0d is that you don' need to read the whole book cover to cover ... You can skip to the chapter (lesson) you want to read about. The book is arranged almost as a problem-solving guide ... Here is the problem and here is what you need to know/do to correct it. This was fantastic! Love love loved this video! Thank you for going over all categories. I had switched my morkie poo around 3 months from science hill kibble, to DIY homemade, to now dehydrated food. I didn't have any time after awhile in making his food and buying raw was getting a little more expensive. For now, my 11 month old pup has been eating dehydrated food. Keep in mind, he WAS a picky eater. It really helped get super informed about dog food. People would tell me, "He's a dog and kibble cleans their teeth." When in reality, he's a dog that needs attention just as humans in regards to their diets.
    Keep these coming - these topics are sooo important now more than ever! BTW - I got the yak milk treats BEST thing ever! My dog is 15 pounds for reference and has never chewed furniture or anything in the house because mental stimulation is KEY along with training. Those yaks are worth it! 😁

I started her on that at eight weeks and she is now 20 weeks old. I have been very impressed with her overall performance all the time. Her mood is great. After i bought Blue Buffalo i learned about DCM linked to peas, lentils and potatoes. I thought it was good food but that and 15 other brands contributed to DCM mostly in grain free as a filler. So i did extensive searching for dog food with no filler, high in protein and low in carbs. Raw is expensive and freeze dried was still pricey. I found Essence kibble to be the best kibble high in meat protein, legumes free and somewhat low in carbs compared to other kibble. But im checking for freeze dried or raw that i can add as a topper to make it last.

    Up here in Alaska, mushers prefer a high fat kibble for working sled dogs. I hunt my labs every weekday from Sept thru January and feed the highest fat/highest protein kibble on the market. I like kibble where the first ingredient is Menhaden such as Red Paw Power Edge 32 k. (32%Protein, 25% Fat)

    I know this video is from awhile ago. I was making fresh cooked food for my 2 year American Eskimo. Then started adding bone meal and dried eggshells for calcium as instructed by recipe in book. My dog developed sores on muzzle and ears. The vet felt it was due to to much calcium due to her breed and I was told to go back to kibble for 80% and a couple tbls fresh cooked meat. After a round of antibiotics and steroids she recovered. I now give her Nulo brand kibble, how do you rate this kibble. Also she gained weight on the kibble even cutting her quantity in half. She always seems hungry, I add vegetables to try and fill her up.

    Thank you for these vids. Amazing! Ive been using Northwest Naturals. Ive been using for about 9 years or more. When my local feed store changed owership they lost there contract with NWN and i couldn't find NWN so i had to change to Stella frozen raw while the new owner worked to get a new contract with NWN and get set up. Unfortunately because of that change in food my pitty became very sick and had to be put down from some digestive problems. It was a horrible lose for me. My other 2 dogs made it threw it. We are now back on NWN and i have a new pitty pup i have him on NWN .

    I just went to the VET for the first time and was not given a consultation to speak about cooking for my dog that I don't have yet. They told me to keep them on puppy dog food until slowly we could come up with a good recipe; however, my breeder is feeding them royal canine and I don't want to give my puppy that, what would you recommend for my one month old puppy bernedoodle (bought food)until I could slowly integrate a homemade meal that I got from Dr. Judy. Please need to know by the time I pick up my puppy December 9th. Thanks in advance.

    Liked your video but one point. My kibble fed dogs, both lab rescues, lived to 17 and 19 respectively. Because they weren't purebreds and that will have a bigger bearing on a dog's lifespan than whether you feed kibble/raw.

That is what I’m feeding my dog (I think… what I feed her is called FreshPet and it comes like a giant sausage?) as she has a sensitive tummy and has struggled to remain on a raw diet for long periods of time (I occasionally will feed her raw). She loves both, but I was wondering if it is actually any good?
