It's for putting your fingers in so you can pick up the stool and carry it easily.
(I would have routed a rounded edge on the bottom of the hold as well.)

Инструменты остались от деда , кое что остались и от прадеда . Парнишка берётся что то делать , получается , но многое не знает .
