They were allowed to do any flavour, the only thing that was meant to be Japanese, was the steamed buns, which obviously, is the issue, since it is Chinese.
They didn't think that India is the same as Japan. They just chose an Indian filling.

With in reason you can? White beans actually hold a lot of different flavors really well. Green tea, coffee, chocolate just plain old red beans are good. They also have pizza buns over there as well as chestnut and probably a few other super experimental flavors because it’s Japan and they do that, a lot.

I would have made a pizza one. Creative by GBB standards, but relatively standard in Japanese convenience stores, so there is some authenticity. Also since the Japanese word for steamed buns is “man,” a pizza one is a “pizza man” and I just can’t resist that.

lol seriously, Japan has soooo many amazing desserts, from the traditional daifuku, nerikiri, and taiyaki, to the more modern Japanese cotton cheesecake, raindrop cake, and mochi ice cream. “饅頭(manjyuu)” might be the steam bun traditionally eaten at japan, although similar things are found in China too. They even share the same Chinese characters because it originates from China, but it came in Japan at around 1200 A.D. so they did develop differently. Sweet red bean will basically be the only filling since we didn’t eat meat (one of the big difference with the Chinese ones).
“酒饅頭(Saka-Manjyu)” is my favorite. Uses Japanese Sake lees to ferment the dough, so there is a slight smell of sake when steamed. Warm and delicious.
And no, we do not fill it with pork or curry😂

The theme was CNY so maybe the judge expecting sometime more to the CNY celebrations instead of a Chinese take out restaurant?
I don't know how Chinese in other country celebrates their CNY but in my country or maybe I should say in my family, we don't really use fortune cookies in any occasion? I've been celebrating CNY since little and I've never seen fortune cookies in anyone's house. Not many Chinese restaurant that I've been to have fortune cookies. Ikr? None of it seemed very Japanese to me. lol How can someone mix Chinese and Japanese up? I will never understand such a way of thinking. I'm from England and I love Japanese culture, fashion and food, so when I saw what they were making, I was so confused and disappointed. :'( I was hoping there'd actually be Japanese inspired food, but nope... I was wrong.
