Meh....I might have to disagree. I mean, sure, both bands weren't as confident in executing the music as they should be in late October, but most of TSU's selections required dynamics.....and KSU's (for the most part) didn't. I gotta go with TSU on this one. The musicality was there. They just weren't cranking like everyone wanted them too.....which may be a good thing. The SWAC has a reputation for sacrificing dynamics in alot of areas for the sake of a good crank. Simmons is healthy for that program.
I am an AOB alumni and forever will be TSU fan but KSU brought that heat in such a smaller package. Wow KSU! I give props where props are due and they earned it.
So, before the age of CZcams, there was the element of surprise that came with the 5th Quarter Battle. Nowadays, you can sort of know what your rival will play simply by looking at the videos from the previous week or so. I'm an 80s baby, and back in the day, the only way you knew what a band played at the game was either by being there yourself or someone telling you... I do, however, love the experience of sitting in my living room with the flatscreen and surround sound and enjoying the experience. So thank you for these videos, very nostalgic of my 1st trombone marching band days....
And by the way....A great assistant band director is at KSU now. Brother Will Brooks. I can hear his stamp all on this band! Very proud of him. And shout out to Al Level. Much respect always! We battled years ago and have had nothing but mutual respect since. Dream team in the making. Keep up the great work men. Chris Hayes

WOW!! KSU Im thoroughly impressed. That marvin gaye piece was incredible. Staff is doing a great job, one of my boys from Jackson State is the new trombone/low brass instructor and its paying off. 10 Tubas sound great..... That opening song from TNSU was Maybach Music 3 from Rick Ross and that was a very dope collegiate level arrangement. But overall KSU won even their energy in the stands
I don’t know what y’all watched but if you a real band head you’d know they TNSU was the clear winner. However KSU us so got damned good, and song selection is a beast🔥. They are definitely a problem for the reset of these band this season.
I think Tnst didn’t “wow” ppl. Especially if you’ve been following them they’ve been playing same songs weekly. Not as much energy as KSU. Yes Tnst sounds good but there is more to it than that lol … I think ppl expected TnsT to wipe the floor with them , I mean look at the size difference
Tsu always sound crisp and clear, immaculate really. I wasn't too thrilled with the song choice though some of those arrangements were a bit on the complex side and I appreciate that. Ksu had more energy and the sound has improved a lot since last season kudos for that. I was entertained more by KSU so I guess I will choose them with the slight W.

WOW KSU sound so good, I knew and heard every song they played, the arrangements were EXCELLENT great job. TNSU I dont know what yall was playing well, except for 2 songs, you guys did ok. Like someone mentioned, these small bands are blowing the big ones out of the stadium.

Love my AOB!!!! Meticulous cleanliness section by section, musicality still as technical as my 90s years and an enriching program. Shout out to my Sophisticated Sisters and Royal Elegance! To KSU .. excellent job.. no hate or negativity here. The battle was enjoyable. Great job to the K-Rettes and auxiliary. I agree with the comments about yesteryears when a bands songs were a surprise week to week unless someone shared a VHS or DVD from scouting which was a thing in the 80s and 90s.
I can tell most of the comments are from people with no idea of how a band runs. CZcams has ruined band in many ways. As an old school bandbead 02-05 A&T, I can say that we had a 50 song book which was mostly learned during band camp. We played the same songs every week adding a couple here and there. But never did we learn an entire new book in a week just for a the quarter. And guess what....no one complained! Over saturation, this selfish microwave culture make everyone think that things only exist in this virtual world. On the other side of this camera are real people working hard to master their craft. Once some(if) some of you become band directors (like myself) you will understand.
Thats why Southern and Jackson are better programs because they adapt to the CZcams era and will play new songs week in and week out! We know this is the youtube era so how it look you playing the same songs every week? Boring!

CLEARLY TSU has the much bigger band looks like an unfair optic (more money D1 school) BUT KENTUCKY STATES SOUND WAS UNMATCHED with half the students, they are just to talented and skilled. Hard work has paid off. They got more bang for their buck being D2. Hats off to the Band Director w these youngsters.
So Tnsu ran some of the same tunes, some. They played the songs expertly! They also played new ones. Their execution was more complex than KSU. Now, this didn't take away from ksu. Great job. But the bonus you all are giving, I e "for their size" bonus. Is it bit much. Size aside, they did great. I still give tnso and edge for a more complex approach. See the battle as a bran new match up, cause I'm sure ksu played some songs from last week too. Best job ksu. 👏
But what if you’ve played those same songs not 2 but 3 weeks in a row. Not only played them but played them damn near in the same damn order and against premier competition. This destroyed Grambling, ewww not so much against JSU and now a 3rd week against a band that came in hungrier than you. Recipe for a bad day. Blame the staff 🤷🏽♂️
I'm just saying, reguardless of when you first heard the song, it's not a deduction. Jau ran songs from 5 weeks, southern too. It's okay. I mean its not like they running songs from 15 years ago that they been playing 15 years in every 5th for 15 years like 2 new schools so chill. Either the song was good or not. Period.

If there was no internet and I was at the battle, I would feel slightly different. That Marvin Gaye is hard and TnSU should absorb into their book. And there lies the problem. This damn internet lets people see what you play every week. Schools know exactly what TnSU is going to play. Doesn’t matter the arrangements are better or if there complexity/range in the TnSU band, people are predicting the next song. I enjoyed it. I am cool listen to Loki on repeat!
I'm reading these comments from the Haters from small bands that don't have to deal with the issues the AoB have to navigate, so let me give you a run down of the last 3 weeks for the AoB. 100 new freshman, battle of the bands n Houston, Hof game n Ohio , Shc n Memphis, add n a NFL halftime show and an appearance on First Take. They battling with the book they left camp with and they added new songs and formations every week. AoB 4Life! cRat 4Life!
We had the Classic in Columbus vs our rival Central State on Aug 28th, Pre Labor Day Battle the next week in Cincinnati vs Lincoln on Sept 3rd, First home game Sept 11th then this game Sept 18, next week we have Benedict in Indianapolis Sept 25th, both bands have been busy

KSu had song choice and for size was very strong. Tnsu Really hit those dynamics and technical things just right. Very clean and TNsu ish. Power was real and very balanced as always. Winner? not really a comparison. Because the styles were totally different. Like JSU vs NCat! I enjoyed both and thought JSU Won, but the more I thought about it, it had to be preference.
As a former FAMU Marching 100 Alumn, congratulations K-State....I must admit, for a small size band, you guys do pack a punch. Tenn St and KSU's band were both good.....

KSU is a trumpet section away from being a problem (mellos way too strong for them)! Most improved award is theirs for the taking.

CLEARLY TSU has the much bigger band looks like an unfair optic (more money D1 school) BUT KENTUCKY STATES SOUND WAS UNMATCHED with half the students, they are just to talented and skilled. Hard work has paid off. They got more bang for their buck being D2. Hats off to the Band Director w these youngsters.
So Tnsu ran some of the same tunes, some. They played the songs expertly! They also played new ones. Their execution was more complex than KSU. Now, this didn't take away from ksu. Great job. But the bonus you all are giving, I e "for their size" bonus. Is it bit much. Size aside, they did great. I still give tnso and edge for a more complex approach. See the battle as a bran new match up, cause I'm sure ksu played some songs from last week too. Best job ksu. 👏
But what if you’ve played those same songs not 2 but 3 weeks in a row. Not only played them but played them damn near in the same damn order and against premier competition. This destroyed Grambling, ewww not so much against JSU and now a 3rd week against a band that came in hungrier than you. Recipe for a bad day. Blame the staff 🤷🏽♂️
I'm just saying, reguardless of when you first heard the song, it's not a deduction. Jau ran songs from 5 weeks, southern too. It's okay. I mean its not like they running songs from 15 years ago that they been playing 15 years in every 5th for 15 years like 2 new schools so chill. Either the song was good or not. Period.
KSU was simply better on this day. The same songs is just a minor excuse. TSU slept on KSU…it happens

Not to mention they were the more exciting band here in this video with a more aggressive sound. TSU sounds awesome as well but they have been better even this season. KSU was well prepared let’s stop playing. I am entitled to my opinion.

If there was no internet and I was at the battle, I would feel slightly different. That Marvin Gaye is hard and TnSU should absorb into their book. And there lies the problem. This damn internet lets people see what you play every week. Schools know exactly what TnSU is going to play. Doesn’t matter the arrangements are better or if there complexity/range in the TnSU band, people are predicting the next song. I enjoyed it. I am cool listen to Loki on repeat!

I'm reading these comments from the Haters from small bands that don't have to deal with the issues the AoB have to navigate, so let me give you a run down of the last 3 weeks for the AoB. 100 new freshman, battle of the bands n Houston, Hof game n Ohio , Shc n Memphis, add n a NFL halftime show and an appearance on First Take. They battling with the book they left camp with and they added new songs and formations every week. AoB 4Life! cRat 4Life!
We had the Classic in Columbus vs our rival Central State on Aug 28th, Pre Labor Day Battle the next week in Cincinnati vs Lincoln on Sept 3rd, First home game Sept 11th then this game Sept 18, next week we have Benedict in Indianapolis Sept 25th, both bands have been busy

KSu had song choice and for size was very strong. Tnsu Really hit those dynamics and technical things just right. Very clean and TNsu ish. Power was real and very balanced as always. Winner? not really a comparison. Because the styles were totally different. Like JSU vs NCat! I enjoyed both and thought JSU Won, but the more I thought about it, it had to be preference.
