I love how Thomas DeLauer is willing to let his health and nutrition philosophies evolve based on evidence, such as how much protein you should eat per day or meal. He even acknowledges that his old videos may say something different. He doesn't stay biased or resist changing his opinion. He even gives credit to the people who helped change his mind. That's awesome. We should all be that way toward everything in life.

Simply eating less or zero processed foods, reducing carbs especially sugar and increasing protein will fix 'skinny fat'. Doing some body weight resistance training for 15 minutes every morning would be a bonus. Also walk more, particularly after meals. If you go too hard on the workouts too often, you'll just increase stress and increase hunger.

Great video, few new things to implement for myself. I exercise Mon-Fri, exist in a caloric deficit, heaps of protein (1g-1.2g per pound of weight) and I am quite lean everywhere (visible muscle striations and definition) except for my torso, although my top abs and ribs are visible. A recent DEXA scan said I was carrying 21% body fat, which is hard to believe, but I seem to carry it very evenly throughout my torso, so I don't even look fat. I am the perfect example of skinny fat. Working on it!

I've found the opposite, due to misinformation on eating trying to address some Dr recommendations on heart disease I found myself dropping weight, about 60lbs over 2 years close to my HS weight. I had always been a strong guy with a large frame. After the weight loss I realized that I had actually caused myself to loose much more muscle than I would have liked and now find it hard to motivate to get that part back given where I was which my age also contributes.
As a side question, I had always thought the extra muscle mass would aid in the weight loss? Build muscle up thus would help more quickly produce weight loss once you switch?

If you are skinny fat you can do body recomp , building muscle at the same time you reduce body fat. If you just focus on losing weight when you are skinny fat you just become a skinnier skinny fat and you won't be happy with yourself in the mirror. I did a re comp as a skinny fat when I was 50 and got into the best shape of my life. Unlike when I was in my 30s II tried the lose the fat fist thing and it didn't matter that I lost weight my body looked like shit. So workout to build the muscle and change your bodies lean mass to fat ratio and you will be much happier.

I was looking at the Bowmar nutrition protein ingredients/labels and noticed a few red flags I was hoping you could clarify/touch on:
    1. Most flavors contain a gum blend. Didn't you mention before that these are not good for gut health?
    2. #1 ingredient is WPC. This may be a concern depending on the level of whey protein, but to be called WPC, it can be as little as 30% whey protein according to the FDA. As mentioned in Jake Tran's recent documentary on protein powder, many companies use WPC-30 and add nitrogen containing compounds to get a higher protein reading than there actually is since the FDA only tests for nitrogen to determine protein content. Researchers have also found that brands using WPC or protein blends claiming 25+g of protein might actually have as little as 12g.
    3. Only for cookies and cream flavor, but it contains seed oils. Also many of the other flavors contain soy lecithin. Both of which aren't very good for you.
    4. "Natural Flavors" are not always "natural" or good for you and can be any number of different chemicals
    5. I don't see any third party certifications, so how do we know if they're tested for heavy metals, banned substances, etc?
While getting rid of artificial sweeteners is a start, I really wish there were some brands that took these into account as well

The latest revised & increased general recommendations are for between 1 & 1.3g per kilo, so you can eat at the upper end of that & still be within the safe parameters. There was also something that high carbs led to earlier death.. & it could be that many eating excessively high protien also eat excessive carbs, (& over eat, & poor quality food, generally)

at the end of the day, and you said it first, right at the beginning, it all comes down to behavioral choices.
To give yourself a direction. Exactly!!! ... but how to do that?
2 principles: First: without measurement there is no management. Second: measure your capabilities, and celebrate when you achieve them.
Which capabilities? For instance, not eating for 12,13,14,15, hours, then try to do 20. going through, and thinking positive about it. Just like in exercise: how many km you run? What is your VO2max? 40,? Then go to 45, or 50. Then celebrate. Or: measure your food, anything... how much protein or how LITTLE carbs, or sugar. How many avocados last week? and how many next week?
Introduce a polyphenol scoring... etc etc etc This will build habits. Setting directions, goals, measuring, managing, and celebrating.
All the rest is almos arbitrary and will rectify "by itself"

Yesss! My midsection grew last year. Being female I looked pregnant. 2024 started off loosing 12lbs on keto ❤ I overate 2:25 protein last year! Gained 3-5lbs a month. Up to 186lbs in December. I think I was having too many carbs along with it. Being keto has shrunk my stomach so I’m able to get a feeling of satiety.
Thank you again❤ for your recommendations.

It's the one synthetic thing it seems you need to consume to get to optimal levels. Maybe you could work on overall diet to increase availability, so isn't needed. Either way, if you do decide to use, it's best to try to make what creatine you get from diet as available as possible, and to do that, I think taking 5 grams will impede, so take as little as possible, probably like a gram.

There are toxins in kitchen pots pans etc. it depends on the type of kitchenware you use some have toxins in them. What kitchenware is the best to use that keeps absolutely all toxins out of their kitchenware? Can you rate these I know they have different kinds? They have copper, a blue pan color, I think they have something called diamond kitchen ware. Can you do a side-by-side comparison of healthy kitchenware to eat from?

The decision is of course based on your specific situation. In my mid 60s I gained 50 lbs quickly while hips and shoulder replacements were performed. Once I determined to lose the weight I found I could not exercise it off. I went with getting the fat off and gradually increasing exercise. Keto faithfully followed was the only thing that worked. I lost 40 lb and feel much better. I had a lot of elder care going on and I didn't loose weight for 3 to 4 months. I'm back on Keto and am aiming to lose at leas 20 lb more. And increase exercise. Also, I find protein and fat work best for me. I followed Atkins back in the 90s and his comment about protein was to eat as much as you want to be satisfied, not as much as you can, lol. It worked then. I like how you strive to continually improve and investigate new developments and present then to us. Great work!

    • @brucejensen3081
      @brucejensen3081 Před 5 měsíci

Terrible idea. Diluting stomach acids for starters. Your body has to rid the alcohol before absorbing the nutrient. Could go on. If you want a drink, eat and when your stomach has pretty much emptied, then get on it.
