- Titanfall 2’s campaign is a wall running, robot battling, first-person shooter masterpiece.
It may be relatively short, but most games struggle to pack half the excitement of Titanfall 2 into double its campaign's runtime, and the outrageous amount of ingenuity developer Respawn Entertainment constantly displays is frankly extraordinary.
Yet for all that, the story of Titanfall 2 is also a sad one. Overlooked by many on release in 2016 and undervalued by Respawn Entertainment and publisher EA since, Titanfall 2 may never receive a sequel despite its incredibly high quality and is part of a series which, at the time of recording this video, is practically dead in the water.

A good sign for the game going forward, the multiplayer just got genuine proper updates that fixed all the ddos problems, broken maps, fixed private matches, and fixed matchmaking! Absolutely wild that it’s finally playable again without Northstar.

Unless you’re talking about the Northstar core, because nothing happened to that. Northstar was the name of the alternate client people used to play the game which didn’t have fucked servers.
When I heard this news I was so doubtful, and I yelled when I loaded into a match for the first time in forever. I was devasted when I wasn't able to play Titanfall 2 anymore.

I usually despised gimmick levels in the past, but by the time TF|2 came out, these missions were a breath of fresh air. Also it had been a very long time since we got a dual world level a la Link to the past or Ocarina of Time.
Someone cooked past perfection. Honestly there’s even a subplot of BT surpassing his programming, gaining emotion and calculating harder and harder calculations (like the explosion of the ark which I doubt any other Titan could have calculated in his situation)
titanfall 2 is coming back in popularity, this video couldn’t have come out at a better time
I played this on a fluke, randomly searching for a new game on game pass. When I tell you I was emotionally spent after the story...whew. fantastic game

I love that Titanfall 2 is getting the full love it deserves, people have talked about the game as some tragic tale but it's great people are playing it again and starting to figure out again that it's an all time great game!

About the dificulty, i dont know if i remember correctly but i think that if you are sliding or wallrunning the grunts and specters will always miss their shots, so even though master dificulty may make you think playing more reserved is the right call, if you are good enough with the movement system you can just jump into action and still survive.
that cinematic trailer is so good, i still go back and watch it every once in a while

Two of the best scifi FPS campaigns of all time both came out in the same season and are only truly appreciated years later.
It drives me crazy how good this game is and how many people opted for the same old crap that EA and Activision put out Every. Single. Year. This was fresh, fun, original, well-written, well-designed, and just a banger of a video game. The people who throw top dollar out for the exact same crap every year are ruining this industry by giving them the message to keep the status quo.
I was blown away when i first played this on my PS4 when it was free for PSN in december of 2020. The campaign and multiplayer were incredible. Everything i did in the game felt like i was an action star. I do hope we get titanfall 3 soon, Titanfall can't join the games that havent gotten a 3rd installment (battlefront, half-life, etc)
I always found the movement and the overall feel perfect. Speed, fluidity. Really hoped other games would try to adapt this in similar games. The Titans are fun too for sure.
Besides this the time travel level is residing in the gaming Olymp.

That thumbnail. If Titanfall 3 happens I would like a open world game in the sense of metro exodus with It's partial open and closed maps and storytelling. It would fit Titanfall perfectly to keep a story going.
Just imagine customizing your titan and exploring the frontier worlds in multiplayer. Meeting players and forming groups.
Massive open world maps with traveling being a big part, never knowing what might happen. You could be ambushed by hostile players or meet friendly folks.
Some kind of planetside 2 would also be awesome

I hopped on the game after a long time with some friends and I couldn’t shut up about the movement. Being on grappling hook and jumping off the walls felt so good to play again.
The movement is SOOOO ADDICTIVE

This is a more general video about why it's so amazing. Less focused on individual bits of design and more on the campaign as one package. They're completely different, promise!

Master difficulty actual encourages constant movement. Theres a hidden accuracy debuff for enemies while youre wallrunning. That paired with the fact that health doesnt increase, the game is just challenging you to nail your shots while never sitting still, like a true pilot.
Which is so nice compared to other games that just become sponges with less ammo
I'm glad to finally say after 2 years, titanfall 2 multiplayer is completely fixed (Respawn itself fixed it)
Yup. Ironically, I was too busy playing Call of Duty to truly appreciate the first Titanfall, but I definitely enjoyed Titanfall 2 multiplayer that made me realize how frustrating playing FPS like Destiny and CoD are, that Titanfall 2 doesn't have. Their maps have the kind of verticality and tactical and strategic planning to combat enemy teams who are doing the same, allowing fluidity of movement and firepower that never feels arena-like and restrictive. Respawn have FPS combat down to an art.
Fantastic, Ben. Any chance you would do a Titanfall 1 retrospective? Though it was experimental, I loved the immersion the multiplayer campaign had. The Battle of Demeter cutscene from militia and IMC perspectives were revolutionary
I reinstalled this game after you did the stream to capture footage for this video. I think the part of the game you mentioned here I need to pay more attention to is the soundtrack. If anything, perhaps Jack is a bit underdeveloped compared to BT, but it's also true BT is the veteran in combat while Jack helps him grow in down-to-earth humanity.
I love this game. I bought it the day it released, and played it until I couldn’t find matches anymore. Very happy to see it finally getting love.

There's literally only one thing i want from Respawn and it's a patch so you can play Custom games on Titanfall 1. Just let us set up our own games with our friends

You just briefed touched on it, but the dialog (incl. options) is one of the things I thoroughly enjoyed in Titanfall 2. I like dialogs in games, but I hate RPGs. My dream game is an FPS (no upgrading mechanics) combined with branching store lines in part affected by dialog choices. This is the closest I’ve seen to this (though, still far away).
By the way, don’t you think between the sci-fi setting, set pieces and level specific gimmicks that there’s a lot of Half-Life 2 in this? Not to mention the game engine, AFAIK Titanfall 2 uses Source (or Source 2?).
Agree regarding length! Not only do they not need to be that long if the content can’t justify it, but the idea that games have to be long to ‘provide value’ is absurd.
Anyway, I think both gamers and games journalists need to take some responsibility for this as well. For as long as I can remember, if a game wasn’t really long, it would get panned by gamers and reviewers alike for its lacking length. Hopefully, this might be changing too.
One more thing about length. I think the correct way to combine a lot of content yet be focused is to have optional stuff that truly feels optional. I actually think some Bungie era games sort of do this in some missions. You can ofte skip through sections if you like. So I think big missions (not open worlds) with a linear golden path that’s not too big could work well here. (And no collectibles or upgrading, leave that to RPGs).

Also I have to add this a bit later since I’m at work lmao but the reason people praise the gunplay so much I believe is simply because you never get punished for firing from the hip too much. Because of this you can squeeze every last bit of speed out of your gameplay

Mk5 smart pistol had disable able aimbot so it’s just a vestigial sight

I have an idea for a Titanfall 3, how about an enemy Titan that force you to get out of yours so you can attack his weak point? Also you could give simple orders to your Titan like "distrac enemy titan" so you would able to mount him

Never played the storyline of this game. If it gets too interesting sounding, i might stop watching this to avoid spoilers! looks nice already
I'd argue once you enter hard, you either aren't skilled enough and start slowing down, or you really come into your own amd embrace the speed. Every enemy has a weak spot of some kind, and you're quickly incentivised to get accurate at identifying them, moving to a position ro capitalise and then being accurate to exploit them as fast as possible, reapers also really emphasize movement on harder difficulties xause if you try to just run or hide, they will easily catch up and hit hard, and titans, their red zones regardless of what loadout bwcome very, as well as utilising that loadout well. You also learn to mix it up between missions understanding that in some missions while the loadout you get given might be good, you already have a better one for the scenario as a whole. EG. Kane, yeah tone will win, its so overtuned it will wreck him anyway, but expodition offers you more mobility to deal with his Scorch's close range menace.
That dead in the water comment thankfully did not age well. Servers are back up and we have frequent player counts of over 10,000 per server
I’ve beat hard and master difficulty, I say hard is pretty fun but master was just a pain

If only Titanfall wasn't owned by the same publisher that's killing Battlefield. Could you imagine what a stirrup in the FPS genre it would be if Titanfall 3 dropped and was at least as good as Titanfall 2 right now? It would absolutely dominate!
If Titanfall 3 online is just a copy paste of Titanfall 2 then so be it if it means we get more story
not the focus of the video but i really think that in terms of campaign, moh aa was much better then cod 1 and 2. i think it may have leaned a bit to heavily into focusing on the spectacle around you and less like an actual game. at the time it was novel to feel like your part of a war, but i think the level design was much better in moh aa and frontline. i know frontline is a different dev but its quite a similar style of game.
