What about when you have a concrete wall behind the ledger and have deck to wall spacers behind the ledger? It extends 1 foot above the ledger and 6 feet below.
Simpson titan bolts
Good demo. These are also good for sudden shift of weight on a deck. Like if a group of people suddenly shift from the house side to the railing side to look at something. Also why the long shear nails/screws are important. Or you end up on a diff kind of youtube/tok vid lol
Kinda like if everyone on a plane get up and run to one side.
Do you have a link for your carpenter pencil magnetic holder. Thanks. Great instruction videos.
Good to see your videos. Always a pro.
Floor joists sit on top of the double plate. From your shot of the protruding floor joist it looks like you had to cut the bottom of the joist to match the deck joist. This means that your double plate is below that. When you installed the deck tie I think you were going into the rim joist and not the wall plate.
The U.S. produced 80.2 million net tons of steel in 2020. Code enforcement expects you to use roughly 97% of this amount when you build a deck.
This is exactly why im questioning if i should pull a permit for my deck
Simpson writes the code book to require their metal brackets. Only their stuff is approved.
@mxusa8383 yeah they studied the lateral force need to break the deck and they couldn't do it with 1000s of pounds of force. The house joist was fine and the deck was still attached.
Do these straps help with vertical support as well? Say if a ledger was attached directly the joists inside the house (no rim board on the house?)
Seems like there are a lot of screws/nails in close proximity to each other on a 1.5" joist. Seems like they should make a product that wraps around the joist also.
I love your videos can I use this to make my deck railing post stronger or is there another product? Thank you so much

Double the rim joist and fasten the posts with FastenMaster Thrulock screws. Use lots of blocking.
Why didn't you space that bracket 4 1/2" away from the ledger? Don't the specs call for that distance? Honest question not doubting you at all. Am I miss interpretating the specs? Great clip BTW.
If I were using a 2x12 ledger but 2x10 joist can is it ok in theory I would be attached to deck joist then go through ledger and then into top plate of house
Good shit bro
Things like this are the reason I always build freestanding decks. I'm replacing/enlarging a deck in the spring and I'm disconnecting it from the house. Initially it's a little more expensive (in material) but it saves a ton of headaches and labor.
It is more headache to make it collapse-proof if you don’t have these. Freestanding deck beeds all kind of tricks to get the same strength. This might be the easiest way to make the deck stronger.
So this video shows why attached decks are BETTER. The downside is that you opened up your house, and its water diversion layers. So freestanding decks are inherently weaker, in exchange of leaving the house protection intact.
@@juzoli
If your freestanding deck is weaker, you did something wrong.
@@toobad9946 Of course, I didn’t attach it to the house:D
Ours is free standing and attached to the house and now I will install these for some more insurance.
I believe that if your support posts are deep enough in in disturbed soil, the soil will supply the necessary lateral resistance. My deck has 6 ft. long 6x6 posts 36” deep and it’s gone nowhere in 35 years.
Thank you indeed
everybody is going to be happy :)) inspectors
Doc, can you use the LedgerLok screws?
“If there’s a hole that can be filled I am going to fill it” -what she said
wouldn't it be "that's what he said!?" lol
@@chuly740 Yeah, if she (or shim, they or whatever is politically correct) said it, I am the hell out of there.😁
What if you have a concrete block building?
What if you install it for every joists? Will this deck qualify as a nuclear shelter? Your decks are pretty close already, so…
Why can you not use them on the side of the joist?will do same job if you need to move it from bottom so you can finish the under side of joist
You can. See installation instructions. ssttoolbox.widen.net/view/pdf/z4eaffenlu/T-C-DECKLAT21.pdf?t.download=true&u=cjmyin
You can also use them on the face side of the joists. Check Simpson's web page.
