Engineering manager interview process can differ a lot from company to company. In this video I'm sharing what are some common and less common questions and how to prepare when interviewing for engineering manager position.

Cool man! I have an interview in about a week and as I'm much more team and management oriented than technical you video makes me feel more confident! And cheching my accomplishment throughout the years also helps, there were a number of situations I had forgotten! Thanks!

How to manage under performer.. attitude is good. Punctual at office timings n meeting timings. I can not spoon feed
How would you prepare for to switch from soft engineer to engineering manager? How do you relate your current position which is not management with the new role? This is more with the people management part of it. Do you have any input on how companies treat internal candidates applying for an open engineering manager role?
Hey!
That's a really good question. I have a video recorded on this topic, it's still waiting for editing and hopefully I'll publish it in June (and I made a video about becoming a leader that has some related content, it's already on the channel)
From my experience people are excited about internal candidates becoming engineering managers. I've seen a number of such transitions both in small and large companies. As an internal candidate you already know the company and the people there, and if they have a good community of EMs you should get good support that can prepare you for the new role.
My suggestion is to start by telling people around you that you're interested in becoming an EM. Your manager should certainly know it, so that they can support you by providing opportunities and help you grow into the EM role. Additionally you can start looking for opportunities to lead some initiatives - it can be some bigger feature that requires working with multiple stakeholders, it can be some less technical work like running a community of practice, or more technical like running a cross-team project. If your manager does their job well, once they learn that you want to become an EM, they should suggest you as a leader when such opportunities appear. On top of that you can start taking care of some meetings, e.g. I've seen people runng retrospectives as their first step into taking more lead role.
thank you very much for this video, its the key!!!, please for the next speak slowly ;) I needed to put in 0.75 hahaha
Thanks, I'm happy you find the video useful! And yeah, I'm going to try to slow down a notch, that's a fair point 😅
The background music is a bit too loud
Thanks for sharing! I hope it's a bit better in my newer videos
I've updated the list of questions on www.notonlycode.org/engineering-manager-interviews/ - it has 70 questions now.

Thank you for the feedback, that's very helpful! I always thought I speak too slow, that's why I started speaking faster 😅
