I just learned Yoshihiro Takayama suffered a spinal cord injury awhile back and is paralyzed from the neck down. Don Frye's message to him was incredible:
“Takayama-san, God gave me the greatest opponent anybody could ever ask for, you. You made the greatest fight the world has ever seen. You are the reason that our fight beat the World Cup of soccer head to head on TV. You are the image of Bushido and strength and triumph. You are the first person everyone asks about when they meet me. You are the warrior we all look to be."
That wasn't just consolation either.Sorry to hear of his paralyisis - may that warrior spirit sustain him.Props to Frye for his empathy and respect.
Damn thats sad. Both fighters have amazing hearts and Takayama never backed down once
Jeezus that's horrible. If there is any such man who's heart could carry him through such tragedy it's him. I wish him all the best and hope by any miracle he can overcome it.
What an absolute fucking legend

This is pure primal art, 2 men, not relying on techniques, not relying on defense. The most primal, most manly, most aggressive fight ever created. 2 men, No defense, no dodging, no blocking, just 2 men hitting each other until the other goes down. It’s horrible but it is also beautiful.

Takayama was given only two weeks to prepare.
This was because Don Frye's opponent was suddenly unable to compete.

Honor, humility, good sportsmanship, and a hell of a show. Thank you Don, and thank you Takayama-san.

Like rock em sock em robots hahahahahah
You could see by the look in their eyes before the fight they both agreed to do exactly that
Frye's ridiculously good, but you do have to wonder if at some point he was thinking, "What the hell do I have to hit this guy with? A brick?" Takayama took more punishment in one round than many people take in their entire careers!
You can see Don clearly frustrated by the way Takayama still get up and fights.

Don had his mustache for defense and Takayama had his inner mustache for his
Takayama was a beast. Imagine if he had started sooner. You can see he can barely deliver knees or punches due to inexperience and he was still facing everyone. Legendary.
I also imagine being that big causes more stress on the body so he probably gets worn out a lot easier
@@doomi_nukem Same can be said with having a lot of muscle mass, the bigger and wider you are whether that be from pure muscle or just from weight/fat it will drain your energy tank quickly. I felt bad for Takayama at the end, you can see the welt, the bruising and the blood on his face but he was a warrior for sure.
I was thinking the same thing. He would have been unstoppable if he'd begun with boxing instead of other martial arts. Plus, his height put him at a severe disadvantage when standing toe to toe and throwing like that. His long arms simply needed more room to deliver their full power. Keeping him close and trading like that was a good strategy, as he could only punch at 50-75% efficiency.
@@jamescard299with that soccer mom technique, he won't last one round in boxing.

Don during this time period is still one of the most crazy physiques I’ve ever seen
That man looked like a real life action figure/video game character
Not sure I've seen a guy take more shots to the face and remain standing than Takayama did in this fight. Broken cheekbone, orbital bone and nose and still throwing and taking shots. One tough dude.
Amen to that... The guy took like 45 blows to the face from Don Frye... Meanwhile, any of us could just barely take one lol
Don Frye absorbed that massive knee to the head, too. Most people would be in the hospital after that.

I like how Don tapped on Takayama's chest after referee stopped the fight as if he said : good boy, good fight
I have no idea how Takayama remained conscious. He gave as much as he got, but his skull was in pieces - shattered. I don't know if it was a difference in bone density, or maybe Don's punches were just faster or from better trajectories, but the damage to Takayama's skull would have killed any other man. What a battle. It's so terrible that either of these men ever had to fight again - they should have both been able to permanently retire after a fight like this. Ambo gladiatores sunt.
I think the biggest difference in the result was compound damage:
Takayama hit different parts of the body whereas Don almost entirely focused his strikes one side of his opponent's jaw.
I can't imagine how painful it would feel to keep fighting under those circumstances. Takayama has an unbreakable spirit.
Takayama was a (catch) wrestler while Don was an MMA fighter. Takayama had little to no combat sport experience and was essentially a card filler for a freakshow fight.
But since the first three matches on the card sucked the energy out of the audience; Takayama went up to Don with a gentleman's agreement. Let's wake up this crowd and go for broke.
Don thought Takayama was crazy, but this was going to be Frye's last fight with Pride FC, and said "fuck it, i'm in" (Pride renewed Don's contract after this fight with a massive bonus)
So not only did Takayama survive it, he asked for it to entertain the crowd.
"his skull was in pieces - shattered"- what are you mumbling about you clueless moron!? He had facial bruises and swelling, nothing more. I can't believe I have to actually say: 'his skull was intact'. Stick to the kitchen. 😮
Well, maybe Takayama has a secret superpower we don't know about - like an indestructible skull made of vibranium or adamantium. Or maybe he just has a really thick head, both literally and figuratively. I mean, the guy took so many hits to the dome, he could probably audition for a role in a zombie movie without any makeup. But seriously, watching two warriors like Takayama and Don Frye battle it out is like watching a medieval joust - except with more blood and less horses
I don't know how Don survived the knee blow from Takayama right after they fell to the ground, it was a knockout shot that actually made a hole in Don's frontal skull :)

forreal tho ahahaaa
This WAS A GLADIATOR MATCH!!! GIVE ME MORE!!!!
I watch this classic fight at least 5 or 6 times a year. I must have seen it hundreds of times by now. Yoshihiro Takayama and his family are always in my prayers. He is definitely a warrior of the highest order and no physical challenge in his life will ever change that.

Why? You have some kind of memory loss syndrome or some shit?
“Takayama likes to collect American cars. He only has one. A chevelle.”
That’s not a collection 😂
Kansas Geoff oh for sure. From now on whenever I have just 1 of something, it’s a collection.
Lol

I've watched two of his fights and all I see him collecting is American ass whippins. 😆
Let our thoughts and prayers be with the mighty warrior Takayama, May a miracle happen in his life and may God bless his loving and supportive wife who is always by his side ensuring he receives love and care and respect.
22 years later and still one of the top fights ever. don fry and tank abbott are who got me into watching ufc when it was a blood sport pretty much and almost anything went. Now its mainly ground and pound and rolling around.
This man's moustache have more muscles than me.
Keanu TM LoL 😂 no shit
I
They literally tested each other's DPS on their faces

Good one
THEY NEED MORE VERSATILITY AND CRIT. STRIKE
Underrated comment of the year! Hahaha
what a beautiful fight
20 something years later and still talked about
Yes, Americans and the west have never forgotten Takayama as well
Amen. God bless that man.
He gave us everything he had..he is a legend
That saddens me. That was one of the BEST fights I have ever seen. I hate to hear that happened to Yoshihiro! One helluva man. I hope he can recover as well. He was impressive!
18 years and counting, still talking about this and we still should
Takayama is the text book embodiment of bushido and never giving in. He is someone All men should aspire to be like.
That stare down was unreal. Then explosive rage unbridled
If Takayama hadn't gone for the throw they'd still be pounding on each other. You'll never see something like this again. What an amazing war. Never gets old. I've probably watched it a dozen times.
Mencari.imformasi .
Theyd still be going at it today tbh
