  • In this week's video, the goal is to break down which of the adaptation got which of the aspects better. I do a Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 vs Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood review, and compare both the anime adaptations based on Source Material, Pacing, Tone, Character Development, Impact and especially, the Ending!
There are some glaring differences between FMA '03 and FMAB, like the differences in the origins of Homonculi and the Antagonists. But there are some subtle differences which make the two adaptations vastly different.
Which one did you enjoy the most? Please comment below whether you're Team FMA '03 or Team FMA:B. Do like the video if you enjoyed, and share with your friends. For other videos on anything and everything related to anime, do check out our channel! You won’t be disappointed.

0:40 this isn’t really true, 03 never adapted the manga faithfully. As was requested by the manga author, Hiromu Arakawa, it was always intended to be a loose adaptation as such even in the early parts that have overlapping stories 03 heavily recontextualized and changed these stories to better set up its themes and foreshadow the later events of its story.
As for the debate about the endings, I agree with you on which was better, but for some slightly different reasons.
Among other reasons the main one is that I appreciated 03’s ending a lot more with how the conflict with centered around Ed’s character conflict and the philosophical examination of his character, while by contrast the fight with father feel very disjointed from Ed at a character level with the fight lacking a character-driven conflict.

I like and am fond of both series. I think FMA03 is good and FMAB is very good.
But considering you talked about the ending, why didn't you mention that the FMA2003 has got a second ending with the "Conqueror of Shamballa" movie? A movie which is only half successful to me, it's a shame they had to cut away important character interactions when they decided to switch from a 13 episodes second series to a movie. Mustang and Winry storyline needed some closure...

    FMA03: let's make everyone sad

Brotherhood has far better social commentary and the ending makes perfect sense for the theme of the series. Fullmetal Alchemist is an exploration of power. Ed sacrificing his power to get his brother back is a direct antithesis of Father's ambition, who represents basically every warlord, king, dictator, politician, corporate executive, etc.
Father sacrifices entire nations to fuel his ambition. To Father, humanity is literally just a fuel for power to achieve his goals.
Meanwhile, Ed sacrifices his power to save just one person. This also happens after Al gives up the power keeping himself alive to free Ed and give him a fighting chance.
Brotherhood's climax is a thematic conflict between people as a tool for power and power as a tool for people.

While I prefer Brotherhood/manga (it just better resonate with me), I'll always like 2003's version for it's darker, grounded and pessimistic, bitter-sweet atmosphere...and for it actually demonstrated this setting this very setting to me.

There’s obvious bias here as well as misinformation. Not to mention how you didn’t even include the actual ending to 03 which is strange, no matter what people claim about “open endings”, CoS is the real ending.
