This is the full size key version of the original iRig Keys, which of course had 37 mini keys. It's still lightweight and mobile, and I really dig the key action as a person that plays light on the keys.

I had the original irig keys, I sold it for $80 and found the pro version on ebay for $75. It's so sweet. The finally have a bag for the keyboard. This instrument is great!!!! Thanks to the review.

+Saalik Z is there a big difference between the two cos I'm really hesitating between the two, I already got a CME VX5 (49 keys) at home and an M-Audio Axiom 25 ( I could sale that one , but that will be a waste of money considering its current value)!
I got an Alesis IO dock where my CME is connected to the ipad! But I want a portable keyboard without the hassle of the camera adapter!
The irig keys seems already nice, that's why I don't think I need the pro, but I heard it feel really nice with the keys, so my question is, 'is the irig keys feel enough alright to not upgrade to the pro?' Especially considering I already got keyboard at home!

Good review!. Would you use it as your main controller to more than iPad if it had some knobs. Would you use it to Mac/PC too?
I like more keys personally so I wouldn't use it as my main controller.
Great review but I'm confused about sampletank 3.
I'm looking into buying iRig Keys Pro with SampleTank 3 but then I noticed there are different versions of SampleTank 3. I see the one that comes with iRig Keys Pro, another called SampleTank 3 Crossgrade and another called SampleTank 3 SpecialEdition.
So my question is should I buy iRig Keys Pro with SampleTank 3 or should I buy them separate from each other? I'm worried that if I buy the full kit that maybe I'm getting a light version or not my moneys worth.

+SpiderWayne I'm not sure which version comes with the iRig Keys Pro but I would assume if it doesn't say Crossgrade or SpecialEdition that it's the full version. Even if it's a lower version you can usually purchase an upgrade later.

Question - when you initially connected the keyboard, prior to playing it with Sample Tank, did you have to do any manual configuration, i.e "set the MIDI Transmit Channels" to allow you to play multiple parts/instruments on different channels --- or "tap LEARN at the bottom of your SampleTank window, to map the VOL/Data knob to the volumn faders within the software to enable it to control the volumn of the different parts ---- or map the "PROG" buttons to allow them to move up and down the instruments list? It seems something is not working with my keyboard; and IK support is telling me that is what i have to do to get it to work; and I thought it should just work since it was natively designed to work with the SampleTank software.
Any feedback from you would be appreciated.

Velocity-sensitive keys and weighted action keys were all concessions to acoustic pianists who used those characteristics as part of their artistic expression, and in the early days, many pianists rejected any electronic keyboard because they lacked any type of “feel”, and many were in fact insulted by the manufacturers who implied that a key on a piano could be replaced by an on-off switch, with its attendant finite output states - wow... all two of them! On or off, yes or no, 1 or zero. This is why many pianists in the early days categorically rejected all electronic keyboards, regarding them as toys, noisemakers, things that could never be regarded a serious musical instruments. When they finally realized the volume of sales this was costing, besides the hindrance to such devices ever growing in popularity in the music industry, people like Korg, Kurtzwiel, Arp, Fender, got to work trying to simulate the analog nature of an acoustic piano’s ‘feel’. This EXACTLY what held back electronic drums in the early days. Traditional drummers counted on the feedback coming back through their sticks to get the exact sound they wanted from the wide variety of surfaces they were striking, from a drum head, taut or loose, thick or thin, rough or slick, to a brass cymbal, bell, bow, or edge... you get the idea. Despite how well companies like Roland and Yamaha have conquered these problems, there are still an uncanny number of purist drummers who absolutely refuse to play an electronic set, despite the advantages regarding transport and setup logistics, the time, trouble, effort, and expense of miking an acoustic set - gone, yet with an enhanced consistency of sound .. on and on. Even worse than keyboardists. At any rate this is what drove the efforts to make key response into the big deal it remains to be.

Hi! Is there any option to have sustain sound without using a sustain pedal? I mean not in GarageBand which has the sustain mode, but in other programs such as Fl Studio, SampleTank, etc... Many thanks
You'd need a pedal or a different controller most likely.
Nice demo. Interesting toy. A lot of amateur musicians like myself would prefer something with 61 keys or even a full 88. As a midi controller for inputting music into a computer is OK but definitely not a keyboard for the concert stage. A lot of full-size 88 keyboards comes with a MIDI cable you can plug into a computer. You can do serious playing with them besides using them as a midi controller.
Doesn't look like this one has touch sensitivity like a regular keyboard (you can play softer or louder with finger pressure). Would be nice if you can at least plug in a sustain pedal that works like the R pedal on a piano.

Great review, thanks. For the Pro version, aftertouch really should have been the thing. In the 37 key keyboards, there is no model with aftertouch right now (other than the one that is more like a computer keyboard)... only 25 and 44 (and up) models have it, strangely; yet 37 is a very portable size; such a shame.

I’m currently trying to find a controller keyboard that I can use easily with my mac. I’ve been playing the guitar for about 14 years and I’m finally wanting to branch out and try piano. So being a noob on the piano would you suggest this as a great beginners instrument? I have no knowledge of the piano beyond what I’ve learned from playing the guitar but I know I can learn it quickly. (youtube, book, etc) If you have ANY suggestions anybody please help me out! Thank you very much!
this is a pretty straight forward controller without a lot of settings so you can just plug up and use it with your software
Some problems Iv found with them is the chord supplied is quite short, the keys can feel slightly loose, no after touch although its not nessasary to have it, can't leave any weight ie book on the keys as they will slump over time. Positive things include lightweight, stylish, low latency, good software.

I am beginner in recording. Maybe this question sounds stupid. If i use software like cubase or Ableton live 8, can I record the MIDI by using USB without going through the interface? If using USB in directly, will the quality worse than regular MIDI input?

1. How would this hook up to a sound module such as a Virus TI Snow. USB (B) to USB (B) if there is such a thing.
2. Also, how easy is it to change midi channel on the fly in a song (to access a different patch for say a chorus)?
I'm not sure if you can hook it up directly to the Virus as the Virus isn't a USB host that I know of. You can quickly change MIDI channels using the function buttons shown.

I've never used an ASR, but I've seen it in action and would love to have something like that since it's hard to find
WIllThaArtist Thanks for the comment man. and ASR is a workstation, not simply a MIDI keyboard, so in that regard, no I do not know any MIDI controllers that work like an ASR.
So then are there any keyboard workstations similar to that or any out there for a decent price for a guy on a budget?
WIllThaArtist You could try finding a used ASR, or another used workstation on ebay, etc.
The used ASR is still pretty out of my price range. I don't know of any others though
WIllThaArtist Dunno, guess you can look into older motifs, tritons, etc. Or an MPC, I don't know your price range or what you're specifically looking for. I can definitely tell you that you'll want more than a midi controller as it will not make any sounds on it's own.

yeah you can plug it up via usb to your computer to use with any software you're running

Excellent reviews. I have recently bought this product. It works perfectly fine on my iPhone, but it doesn't work on my Mac computer.
The following apps were downloaded on my computer: 'Authorization Manager', 'SampleTank 3', 'SampleTank 2.5', 'SampleTank Custom Shop,' and ''SampleTank Free Sounds' for both SampleTank 3 and 2.5, 'AmpliTube 3', 'AmpliTube 4', and 'TrackS-CS', but none of them works. The piano is just not connected to the computer. It has no sounds, no music instrument options, no patterns nor any functionalities on the SampleTank apps. What have gone wrong?
And, do we really need so many apps to connect the piano?

You need to install the programs on the computer in order for the keyboard to work with them. Similar to how you install apps on the phone.
I have installed the above mentioned apps/programs but it still doesn't work...

Ahh ok, yeah not sure if you can do that or not, never tried it.
The keyboard is fine for the money you pay. The problem is the Sampletank software. Every time you hit the low c, whatever loop pattern stars during the gig. And there's no way to turn the function off by default. Another problem is the customer service. It is hard to say that they answer sincerely on the discussion board or on their website to the questions that many of you probably will have if you use their apps. Their acoustic piano app is fine. It's clear and it responses to your performance well. But the keyboard patches on Sampletank weren't clear enough to monitor them during my rehearsal.

I don't know which other keyboard you're referring to, this keyboard is a controller, it doesn't have sounds, it needs to be connected to a computer or ipad/iphone.

I guess that would depend on what app you're using, this review is on the keyboard which doesn't have it's own app it's just a controller.

It is just a midi controller, no sound comes out of it, the sound is coming from the ipad in this video.

Mi Picasso Thanks for watching, well, it's powered by USB so I don't think you would be able to hook it up via regular MIDI, there are no MIDI outputs on it so you couldn't use USB to power then use MIDI output.

how can you expand garageband why is itso limited... logic pro is uggly and nasty... i use ableton live but if garageband would expand i would go back to it.
