Great job as always. Good to have you back. By the way, I have always been disappointed with tosslinks as compared SPDIF. Something mussing compared to digital coax.

James Patric , the received wisdom is that with Toslink being optical, it resists electrical interference during transmission. This is true in theory, however, in reality, the transmission via a normal optical fibre introduces artefacts which create a distortion of a different kind. This results in serious losses which in the digital information. Your DAC then does its best to fill in the gaps, which is never ideal, and this is why a good coax does a better job.
Another reviewer on this platform explained this and pointed to a company which specialises in muti-strand fibre optic cables to fix the issues with Toslink. I have no actual experience of this and no affiliation with them, but if you fancied giving them a go, the price seems remarkably reasonable. www.sysconcept.ca/product_info.php?products_id=364&osCsid=gk171sja8tvvsmig3kujt79465

It sounds like a nice peace of gear. If possible review Musical Fidelity m6si and the M8XI especially the M8XI since there are few to audition!

I studied English at University, a degree which involved reading (unsurprisingly) and analysing novels and textbooks in minute detail...for three years. This left me feeling like a burnt-out husk, completely and utterly unable to enjoy the written word, as I had all my life up to that point. Is it similar for you, I wonder? Does the long-term analysis of music's minutiae make it impossible for you to sit back and listen to a record, without feeling the need to "rip it to shreds"? (In the nicest possible way, of course). Just a thought, and thanks again for the interesting videos.

Yes and no. I've been a freelance journalist and editor for over 35 years and have always written about what I enjoy: aviation, computers and computer games, music, etc, etc. Because of that, I've had to be careful of burn out. Down time should be carefully managed because of that. There are periods when you need to do something completely different during days off to keep things fresh in music/hifi terms. So although I'm surrounded by thousands of books, I've never wanted to write for a literary magazine. I've wanted to keep books as purely leisure-based. I could write a large feature on this subject but that's the core issue.

and 3 years later this amp is still in production with a relatively minor price hike of £100.

Why is there a 3.5mm board mounted jack instead of a quarter inch panel mount jack for the headphones? If you use an adapter , you are begging for a broken jack or board. If they used a quarter inch jack to begin with, the adapter weight (strain) wouldn't be an issue. Equals cheap construction to save a dollar or euro. IT DOES RETAIL FOR 2400 SO NOT ASKING FOR TOO MUCH!

I would like to know the best way of connecting the Denon Anniversary edition of SACD player and Denon Amplifier together.
Would you use the digital or analogue connectors ?

If the difference is so small you can’t decide which you prefer maybe it doesn’t matter. But what I would do is decide which connection you want to start with and use that for a couple of weeks so you get used to the sound. Then switch to the other and listen again for a few days. You’ll probably be able to decide which you prefer after that. Switching from one to the other rapidly highlights differences, but if you’re like me you’ll need to listen for longer to decide on your preference.

All that's listed is Quad Electrostatic speakers. If that's the case isn't that a massive overkill for a 2k amp? I believe a amp needs to have sufficient control over speakers otherwise it can clip. I have the 1st gen Pulse with PMC TB2i. Fantastic combo.

My Quad's cost me £2.5k. I'm not sure that figure qualifies as "overkill" :) They are also a superb, insightful sonic tool for the hi-fi reviewer.

Are you confusing the 57s that I have with something like the more modern 2912s - as one example? You can't buy the 57s new any more. In fact, I bought mine second hand and had them refitted with new panels by One Thing in Leicester, UK. Hence the £2.5 tag. Otherwise, you can pick up old models for (sometimes under) £1k.
