Are you wondering how to be a successful florist in 2023? This is the video for you.
In this week's CZcams video I'm sharing two of the biggest mistakes I made in my flower business. If I'm being totally honest, I made SO many mistakes but the two mistakes I'm sharing in this week's video are absolutely the ones I wish I had learned earlier.
So, if you're a new designer looking for tips on how to be a successful florist in 2023, this will definitely help. And, if you're a veteran designer but looking for a little reboot, a reset in your business, this is going to help you too!!
Also, if you're looking for ideas on how to set up a flower shop, want to start flower shop business in 2023, or tips for being a florist in general, this video will help.
My goal with this video and being open with my (many mistakes) is to help you avoid spending hours Googling things like "flower farm florist", "becoming a florist 2023", "online floral business tips 2023", "run flower business 2023" and "start flower business in 2023".
It took me more than four years to learn some of these things and I want to make sure every florist and farmer florist can learn from it - and get to success faster!!
This video also gives you a taste of what it's like to be a floral designer, passes along a few helpful flower business marketing ideas and gives you insight on how to start your own flower business in 2023.

A big big THANK YOU, KATHLEEN, for this video ! Today, and for the last few days, I’ve been in tears in my flower shop (opened 9 months ago). It’s extremely quiet, and some people think the shop is gorgeous, some people think that it is too grim, and I’m feeling lost (and I do let the rude customers get to me, which is not the best thing to do)… I am shared in between pleasing most people and trusting my own floral identity and go for it… But your video picked my mood up ! Thank you!
Hi Mina, This is so amazing to hear! I am so incredibly glad that this video was helpful for you! 🌸
Just remember it is your business and you get to create and do whatever you feel like. Some people will like it and some people will not and that's OKAY. We sometimes feel like we have to please everyone, but the truth is we DON'T.
There will always be room for improvement inside our business, use the unhappy and rude customers as motivation. 💪🏼
@@LittleBirdBloom thank you for your kind words! Actually, it is what I usually do (use the unhappy and rude customers as motivation) but there are times when it gets too much…. 😆
@@LittleBirdBloom + I do find your videos amazing and very useful! I saved all of them! ❤
This is my first search on starting up a flower business and your clip popped up. Thank you for sharing your downfalls. This is helpful to hear. I'm a senior and closed to retiring from painting houses. I love working with colors and the beauty of the flowers will keep me inspired. Thanks again for reminding me of cost.
Hi Larry, so happy to hear that you found the information helpful in starting your flower business. We offer a large sum of information that will help you along your journey. 🌸 Good luck!
I was introduced to floral arrangements when I worked in the floral dept at Safeway. 9 years later and it’s still on my mind. I love working with flowers and having a business one day working as a florist would be a dream.
Hi Rawan, you can definitely make that dream come true. If flowers are your passion I would definitely recommend pursuing something you love. 🥰
Thank you for your honesty! It’s helped me shape my business model and avoid expensive mistakes.
Hi Frances! That's what i'm all about.. we are no longer gate keeping the secrets of being a successful florist. 🥳
Our conversation today! Thank you!!
You are so welcome! 🤗
This was an amazing video. Ty!
Thank you! So great to hear 🌼😊
You speak english, and are so understanding. I am finishing my level 2
Hi Rachel, so great to hear!
Good afternoon Kathleen, I am wanting to makeup little posies for a market here in Christchurch, South Island, NZ. I was going to ask you the best way of wrapping, or easiest. I watched a video of yours from two years ago, which I did find helpful. Do you have any fresh tips. 🌺@@LittleBirdBloom
This is the first video I've seen of yours. I'm about to turn 16 and I have a dream of owning my own flower shop. I'm trying to learn as much as I can while I'm young and your production quality has been the highest I've seen so far. Thank you so much
I love this! It is so incredible that you are so dedicated to chasing your florist dream at such a young age. You have come to the right place! Consume as much knowledge as you can and when the time comes you are going to do AMAZING things! ✨
Ive been a florist for 48 years worked in flower shops. I graduated in 1977. I love designing flowers wedding work. I have had a a few weddings I've done but not getting recognition
You've got this! Sometimes we need to go back to the drawing board and pull everything apart, don't be afraid to make dramatic changes in order to get to where you want to be. 😊
Thank you so much, am practicing what you shared on charging :)
Hi Edna, that's awesome! Glad you found the video useful. 🌸
I’m really enjoying your videos!
This is so awesome to hear! 😀
This was extremely useful!
This makes me SO happy! 🥳
Superbly useful, thank you!
I'm so glad you found it helpful! 🥰
thank you so much cathlyn ♥️ you remindse me a lot in terms of pricing I'm from Philippines
You are so welcome! I'm so glad it's helpful 🎉
Hi. I think the benefits of getting ones pricing right is that ones cash flow is more stable which gives one the ability to purchase the material and equipment that is lacking to make the business function better. It is a huge problem not having the required tools or rather insufficient tools and material because of the lack of funds. Thank you, your advice helps me greatly.
Hi Jenny, Yes I agree with everything you just said. That's why once we get the pricing right and the cash starts flowing everything else improves as well. It's a domino effect and it's super IMPORTANT. 🎉
I'm glad you are finding the videos helpful!
This was SO helpful
Hi Elizabeth, so happy you found it helpful 😀
Thanks
could you talk about what to do when feeling stuck? for example, a rough couple of weeks with sales has me scared of working on new pieces while others are still on the shelf, but if i don’t work on new stuff i run out of content for instagram.. do you see my struggle here? 😂
Yes!!!! Totally! Two things have really helped me navigate the "no one is buying from me" seasons (days / weeks / months):
1. Practice delineating between "data" and "drama". Our brains have a really good way of telling us all these stories when in actual fact, that data helps cut through that super quickly and then we can reframe the story in a way that helps us make progress. So, instead of my usual story of "No one wants what I have to offer" I will go back and look at the actual sales data.
2. When things feel really really hard (and yes, we ALL have those seasons), I go back to three super simple beliefs (a) People want what I have to offer (b) People are waiting to work with me and (c) What I have to offer is of value.
These two exercises are what have helped me pick myself up off the ground 100s of times.🥳
Can you walk us through the set up/install/breakdown?
Definitely can do! Are you looking for something along the lines of setting up for a wedding ceremony (or reception) at a venue?
Omg I tried to start a business for mothers days and it was a total failure cause I was literally given away my flowers. I tough they were way to expensive 😭
I'm sorry to hear that your first experience didn't go as planned. Use this as a lesson, go back to the drawing board. It's so important that you don't undercharge your work, your work is worth it and the right customer will pays the right price. 🥰 Check out some of my videos on pricing that will help you in the right direction:

Hi. What about arranging 50 roses wrapped up but having the stems exposed out ( no wet paper towel or no water vase ) for a customer. What spray would be better to apply in order to last longer until they get home and place it in water. Thank you
I've never used sprays for flowers so I can't suggest any. (We never had access to them in Australia so we learned to go without it.) Some florists will spritz a little water on the rose faces. I've found that with high-quality roses they can be out of water for hours and still last a long time once they get home + in water. 🥳
That's my issue afraid to put a fair price on my work
It's so important to know your works worth and charge what you deserve! 🥰
Would you price your work like you would in a flower shop
Hi Lynda, I would price my work the same regardless of if I am working from a flower shop or from home 🥳
@@LittleBirdBloom thank you
@@LittleBirdBloom I've been designing flowers for over 40 years
what about if you have been under charging for 37 years and in the middle of the game you raise your prices? now you feel the need to explain yourself to your longtime clients/customers?
One of the best lessons I learned is to be matter of fact in the communication with your customers. We don't need to apologise or over explain ourselves. And, with all the rising prices around us, it's like your customer are expecting it to happen - so maybe today is the perfect day to jump in and make it happen?
If it helps too, I had this same story going in my head - I literally thought we'd lose ALL our customers and I'd go out of business. Turns out we only had a handful of customers even remark about the price increases and they still kept buying flowers😀
At the end of the day, I wish someone had told me that my clients will be better off after I raise my prices. It's like we can actually serve them even BETTER once we take the leap.
why would you spend so much time talking about the pricing equation being proven and necessary and then not give the equation?
You are totally right! Check out some of my videos where i dive deeper! 🌸
