The first season of the American superhero television series The Boys, the first series in the franchise based on the comic book series of the same name written by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, was developed for television by American writer and television producer Eric Kripke. The season was produced by Sony Pictures Television in association with Point Grey Pictures, Original Film, Kripke Enterprises, Kickstart Entertainment and KFL Nightsky Productions.
The first season of the series stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Kapon, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, and Elisabeth Shue. The story takes place in a universe where most of the superpowered individuals are recognized as superheroes, but in reality abuse their powers for personal gain, information the public is kept unaware of. The series follows the eponymous Boys (led by Billy Butcher), a group of vigilantes looking to bring down Vought International and expose its corrupt superheroes. When his girlfriend is accidentally killed by A-Train, Hughie Campbell joins the Boys to get revenge against the Seven. Meanwhile, Annie January is forced to face the truth about those she admires, after she joins the Seven, led by Homelander. The Boys attempt to stop Vought from receiving government support for superheroes by uncovering the company's secrets. When Hughie and Annie begin a romantic relationship, the conflict is muddled despite the two of them initially being unaware of each other's affiliations.

The flying dolphin cracks me up so damn much. And then boom! It gets turned into tuna salad.
I've loved every episode. But The Oak has now met my favorite character, and I'll leave it there until you learn her name on the show. Thanks guys for doing this show.

That whole scene with The Deep and the dolphin is one of the funniest scenes in the whole show for me.
Me too, I actually laughed until tears when I first saw that. It's so obscene and just establishes the dark humour of The Boys so well.

I want to say, I really appreciate how you give a refresher on how blind each person is before each episode. I didn't need it this time, but sometimes when you're watching a bunch of different reactors watching the same show or movie series, or you take a break before continuing watching a reactor, it can be easy to forget or mix it up. So it's great to get caught back up like this.
On your point about Superman saving a plane in Superman Returns, I think the show directly addresses that. Maeve suggests that he try to fly out and stop the plane, and he says he'd just punch a hole right through it if he did that, which is true. His surface area is too small.
Superman realistically shouldn't be able to stop planes or buildings from crashing the way that he does, so in a certain point in the comics, they started explaining that he actually creates a forcefield around things he touches, allowing him to stop large objects without just destroying them.
Exactly this. To provide a simple example, imagine stepping on a nail. Now imagine that instead, the nail is going upwards into your foot. Same difference.
Yeah, they had to give Superman the magical telepathic force field to justify him not breaking stuff.

I speculate he could lift the plane in the air. If he gently let it rest on his back or at least slow it down.
That is how he flies. The plane stuff is a totally different power. It also requires plenty of concentration to use it to hold the plane together.
If a villain attacked Superman, it would unfold how the plane ended here.
Fortunately, Supergirl has the same ability, and is a main reason for sidekick superheroes.@@MrSqurk

You guys know way more about the Spice Girls than I do😂 Butcher’s speech was quite funny. Apparently, Mother’s Milk OCD isn’t a character trait. The actor has it. I think he said something about the director reacting to how believable it was. Anthony Starr plays Homelander so well it’s scary!
He has OCD in the comics too. IIRC Butcher warns Hughie about making sure he uses a coaster for his coffee at the office, or MM will go ballistic.
Anthony Starr deserves an award. he is bar none one of the best acts in this show.

I thought Quinn was almost there with Homelander's speech. It was almost note for note the speech that George W. Bush gave on the wreckage of the WTC. It led to the Patriot Act, the surveillance state, the war in Afghanistan, eventually the war in Iraq, the rise of ISIS, and....well, the division of today; the show parallels this pretty well. Especially with the introduction of a new character in s2: Homelander's continued shift towards authoratarianism and supe-supremacy leads directly to the themes of the new member of the Seven.
The Boys is incredibly graphic for a live action series😂
That's why it works so well. Because a world where super people are always on a powertrip and just so corrupt, they wouldn't hesitate from inflicting harm either intentionally or unintentionally

Notice how episode 1 homelander can control how far his lazer goes (when he lasers the guys weapon and hand) and 9:37 too but then just lasers through the guy , knowing full well behind would damage the controls of the plane lol , was clearly his Plan all along to not want to save them , savage

Eh, don't think that's necessarily it. He and Maeve had thought the crisis was over after taking out the first hijackers (as shown by him celebrating and boasting off).
I rather think that shows that Homelander is lazy and doesn't take seriously the scenarios he operates in: initially, when he lasers the other hijacker, he does control it likely to ensure not to kill any passenger behind him, cause that would be terrible PR and whatnot. But once he's in the cockpit he doesn't even consider to take any precautions, he goes full in and fries everything up, when considering his strenght there wouldn't have been a need for his lasers to begin with. He just didn't think nor care.
That's a possibility but I think he just didn't care and fucked it up. We've seen that Homelander is clearly the strongest person in this universe and he's not an idiot but he does make mistakes. I think with the first guy he lasers in the plane he's very aware that he's being watched and that if he hit a civilian behind the guy it would be a big problem, but with the guy in the cockpit I think he just over reacts and thinks "fuck this guy I'm going to cut him in half" which is why he sliced across him rather than just a single beam through the chest.

The dolphin scene so far has been the only scene in any show or movie that had me cracking up to the point where I had to pause cuz I couldn’t breathe and was wheezing. At the same time In This episode that plane scene has me emotionally drained

The entire point of this show is, that most of the shit Superman does wouldn't work and that if you had power like Superman, it would be incredibly unlikely that you would become even remotely close a good person.
Really love watching The Boys again with you. Such a good series.
First: Hot Pockets are delicious.
Second: Looking forward to next episode. It's my favorite of the season.
Third: What always gets me about the plane scene is that Homelander is right. The show payed homage to classic arguments about Superman. Homelander could have taken out the last terrorist in a way that gave them a chance; but once the controls were destroyed it, it was over for those people. The amount of force necessary to adjust the flight of the plane, when applied to an area the size of Homelander, no matter how gently, would have ripped the plane apart. An airplane simply doesn't have the structural integrity to withstand that. And flying them down? The speed he would have to fly and the abruptness with which he would have had to stop to make return trips in time would have produced fatal g-forces.
Homelander tried to save the plane in the comics.
His size and his super strength ripped the plane apart and it crashed on the Brooklyn Bridge. Also, the setting for that scene is on 9/11. Yeah, the author is a very topical man.
Judging by the the guys' reactions, I think they're the first reactors I've seen that realised that Homelander's "I hear you brother" speech is nearly a direct quote of George W Bush's post-9/11 speech. I'm not the only one who saw them recognise it right?
I respect the decision to not really follow up on it. Who wants to make their comment section political, right? That being said, the show is outright and unabashedly political. It's going to get harder and harder to not talk about such topics as the show goes on; Particularly beyond the first season.
I've seen too many reactors cut some of the most interesting scenes because they're clearly avoiding talking about the political comparisons that the show is making. I hope this reaction series doesn't go the same way.

Antony Starr and Karl Urban are both from NZ, and before The Boys and Banshee Antony Starr played identical twins in a nz cult classic called Outrageous Fortune. They were very different characters and he was always amazing!

I think Homelander set his plan for the hijacking as soon as he heard the time frame for the fighter jets/no other witnesses. Why would he even need to use his lasers in the cockpit either? Guns literally do nothing to them lol. It’s his first real attempt at trying to gain more control at Vought

Ep 4 of season 1 was brutal. The plane scene got to me.

This was always a rough watch and its gets far worse... This show is brutally emotional at times, one of the best shows period.
Homelander was right about not being able to save the plane, and the scene from Superman Returns you referenced with him saving that plane over the baseball field was....um.......bullsh*t.
Just basic physics, you can't save a plane or stop a falling object like that.
PArticularly one made of a flimsy body like an airplane's light aluminum alloy body is.
He would fly right through it or completely mangle the hull if he tried to stop it with the bulk of all his force concentrated in just his hands (point-distribution of a large force onto a large surface area. Think : What would happen if you tried to stop a balloon dropping to the ground using a needle?)
Homelander may be lazy and he may have been unwilling to try, but he wasn't wrong about why it wouldn't work.
That scene was a dig at everytime they've ever show Superman saving large falling objects like that.

If you lift the plane with your hands the plane will just crumple at that point. a six inch point wont have the strength to hold the weight of the entire plane.

When I saw this episode, I knew that this show would be amazing. So many times you see the troupe of the superhero saving the plane. Home lander handled it recklessly, and then just left. It would be extremely difficult to resolve that situation easily. Honestly, they should’ve brought a train because he could’ve speed run through the plane. The Homelander is an amazingly brilliant villain, and Anthony star plays such a good job portrayed him.

Love your reactions to gems like Arcane, The Boys, Midnight Mass, etc. You guys seem to love true quality storytelling and movie making. As such, one of the best recommendations I can give you guys is a gem of a movie that has been a favorite of mine since I watched it and to any friends and family I have even shown it to. "One Cut of the Dead". It's truly a unique experience. 100% RT score. However, the rub is how easily this movie can be spoiled. It's best to go in completely cold. No viewing the trailer or reading a synopsis. Just a single word can spoil what this movie is. There is no nudity or sex, so safe for a CZcams edit. Best viewed with English subtitles. I hope someday you guys get to enjoy this amazing watch.
Just know there are no CGI edits, pan cuts, splicing footage, etc. "One Cut" means exactly that. It's a single take/shot!

The plane scene in The Boys Show was WAY MORE gruesome in the comics and it took place on 9/11. Instead of the Twin Towers however, the Brooklyn Bridge was destroyed.
