90년내중반 우리들의 음악적 오아시스였죠
아... 언제쯤 김동률의 음악을 리뷰하실지 기다리고 있었는데... 드디어 나왔네요.
대학때 건축공학을 전공하고 있었지만, 어릴적부터 피아노와 음악에 심취해 있던... "김동률"은
친구 "서동욱"과 함께 출전한, 대학가요제에서 대상을 수상하게 되었습니다.(1993)
개인적인 음악적자질(클래식+피아노+보컬)을 대외적으로 인정받게된 그는, 서동욱과 함께 "전람회"라는 그룹으로 3집까지 활동하였습니다.(1994 ~ 1998)
그 이후로 지금까지 솔로로 활동중입니다.(잠깐 프로젝트 그룹을 하기도 했지만요.)
"전람회"의 해체 이후, 버클리음대에 입학해 작곡/영화음악작곡을 복수전공했습니다.(1999)
버클리음대를 다니기 전에는 "브라스"정도의 소규모 악단과 협업하는 정도의 음악이 일부 있는 정도였으나,
버클리음대를 수료한 이후에는 본인의 곡에 오케스트라 연주를 접목시키는 일이 많아졌습니다.(특히 콘서트 때)
그래서, 그의 콘서트에는 언젠가부터 오케스트라가 협연을 합니다.( czcams.com/video/voOaE6kql7I/video.html )
- 2000년 이전 : 전람회부터 초반 솔로 활동 당시에, 댄스음악과는 결이 다른 음악적 특색(클래식 + 발라드)이
한국인의 정서와 잘 맞았기 때문에 어느정도 인기가 있었던 것으로 보입니다.
당시, 일반적인 인기순위에는 특출나지 못했지만, 음반판매량 등에서 두각이 있었습니다.
1990년대에 한국가요에 유행했던 "하우스", "힙합"이나 "레게" "테크노" 그리고 "아이돌"그룹의 인기와는 또 다른... 대한민국을 대표하는 발라드 가수였습니다.
-2000년 이후 : 작곡 능력(클래식)이 추가되면서, 자신의 음악에 오케스트라 연주를 추가하거나, 합창단과 같이 노래를 부르는 등의, 노래의 "깊이"와 "넓이"를 한층 확대하는 모습이 많아졌습니다.
현재에 이르러서는, 공연다운 콘서트를 보고싶은 대중들에게 가장 인기많은 가수중 한명이 되었고, 콘서트 티켓은 10분만에 4~5만장이 매진되기도 합니다.
"바리톤"느낌의 톤으로 고음영역을 소화해내는 목소리가 가장 큰 장점이며, 이 때문인지... 대다수의 팬이 여성입니다.
기교를 많이 부리는 노래가 아님에도, 고음인 노래가 많아, "김동률"의 팬인 여자친구에게 그의 노래를 불러주려다가 실패한 남자들의 후일담도 많습니다.
부르기 어려운 곡이 많다보니, 콘서트 후반부에 목소리가 초반과 같이 유지되지 못하는 경우가 있기도 했습니다.(동률님 죄송합니다 ㅠ.ㅜ - 하지만 사실이잖...)
또, 그는 "완벽주의"로 유명해서, 같이 연주하는 밴드나 오케스트라, 코러스가 힘들어하는 영상도 유튜브에 있습니다.
반면, 이런 성격탓에 본인이 실수를 하게되면, 엄청나게 당황을 하기도 합니다.
전람회 시절부터 현재까지, 그의 앨범에 실린 수록곡은 거의 대부분 본인이 작사/작곡했으며, 다른 가수에게 준 곡이 유명해진 경우도 있습니다.(자신의 콘서트 때 사용할 곡의 오케스트라 편곡도 본인이 합니다. lol)
전반적으로 그의 곡들은 어둡거나 슬프거나, 슬픔속에서 피어나는 희망과 같은 느낌이 많지만... 가사가 아름다운 단어들로 꽉꽉채워져 있습니다.(최근에는 밝은 노래도 많아졌습니다.)
"리액트-투-더 케이"에서 "김동률"의 다른 노래들도 들어보셨으면 좋겠네요.

님 덕분에 옛 기억이 떠올랐습니다.
전람회 1집을 카세트 테이프로 구매하는 바람에(중학생이라서 돈이 없....), 계속 들으면 테이프가 늘어날까봐, 다른 공-테잎에 녹음해서 들었던 기억이 나네요~
저도 이 채널에서 김동률의 곡을 해주길 원했는데 오늘 드디어 들었네요. ^^
저는 '희망'이나 'requiem' 같은 곡은 어떨까 했는데요.^^ 님께서 정말 자세히 써주셔서 여기에 댓글 답니다.
덧붙여 저 바리톤음색의 남성보컬이 작곡자라는 것도 알려주셨으면 좋지 않았을까 합니다. ^^

I don't know how he managed to collaborate with the London Symphony, but Kim Dong Ryul has already collaborated with the London Symphony in his previous albums in early 2000s when he studied at Berklee College of Music and also just graduated
The LSO are THE Hired guns in the world of film scores and accompaniment. They make a huge amount of money recording for artists all the time - and have performed in Korea on several occasions. How did Dongryul get them? Simple - his label PAID the asking fee (either SM or Kakao, which is very large and rich publishing company)
IU already did concerts with tokyo symphony as well
I just saw IU last Friday and that's enough as a Christmas gift. 🤗🤗🤗

Kim Dong Ryul is the singer of "Should I Say I Love Her Again", one of the early 2000s popular Korean pop songs. He learned more about music in Berklee College of Music (1999) and majored in film scoring. In between his study, he released his 2nd and 3rd albums. Once, he made music with London Symphony Orchestra.

I would also recommend Jung Jae-hyung. He is a singer-songwriter, composer and pianist. I don't know if it is included in K-pop, but I am sure you will love it. 🙂 I recommend his '편린' live performance and his recent album 'Avec Piano'

크 김동률님 노래 좋죠. 노래방만 가면 꼭 부르고 나오는 노래가 김동률의 출발 이라는 노래입니다.
마치 정말 숲속을 걸어가고 있는 느낌을 알려주는 노래예요.
폭발하는 가창력도 좋지만 이런 도란도란 차분하고 서정적인 노래는 더 기억에 잘 남는 것 같아요.

In mid 90s, many Korean artists worked with London Symohony Orchestra. Then they shyed away when it became really expensive due to econonic crisis in 98 for Korean currency dropping its value. They have not gone back crazy to working with LSO since but you see it every once a while.
Not surprising Kim Dong Ryul worked with LSO on this.
