Dyson is rolling out their new line of air purifying headphones. Pretty interesting technology! However... is it any good? Does overpressure air purification even do anything? NASA, Tesla, and 3M seem to think so.
3M PAPR Respirator: amzn.to/45wLgOX
What if I inhale quickly? Is the fan strong enough to keep positive pressure if I suck the air out of it quickly? Or it only covers relaxed breathing situations?!
I imagine as long as you're not running/exercising with it - it would keep enough air supplied. Lol I'm not using mine anymore. You want it? A gift from one channel to another. It has been taken apart once. But still works.
It definitely won’t work anymore after ElectroBOOM gets his hands on it 😂.
At least it will go out with a bang! 💥
@@JerryRigEverything :D sure why not! Maybe I can make a vacuum cleaner out of it!!!
@@ElectroBOOM 😂
At the end of the day, this dyson product just feels like an idea put together
"Not as dumb as you might think." Yes... Yes it is.
Yeah, he explained how idiotic it actually is ahahah
Actually, the title is correct. It was dumber than I thought.
Yep
Not AS dumb. Way, way dumber.
that's quite a statement from someone called dumbo 😂 😂
Computer building community has known about this for decades.
If you want to keep your case more dust free, have more filter incoming air than outgoing air, to create a high pressure zone in the case.
If you have more air output, more fans sucking out, dust will enter through every crack in the case.
Good point!
Basically have positive air pressure because negative air pressure will literally make your case a vacuum.
Also, keep in mind that 1 intake fan is only 1/3 the strength of an exhaust fan because of the filter in front of it.
So 3 filtered intake fans is equivalent to a single exhaust fan.
Not going to lie, Zach... it's exactly as dumb as I thought.
your too poor to buy any so no loss
@@Puppyjans Lol , it is a good headphone but it doesn't do what it tries to which is to give you clean air.
@@Puppyjans what?.. Are you 12? I'm a functioning adult with a job that can afford me to buy these on a whim and not think twice. You're clearly young, but here's a fun fact: there's a group of people (that I'm included in) that work hard and make a good living, and we don't have to check our account balances before we make purchases.
@Silvan Pierce easy bud, i believe he is just a kid 😂
Was that the title? Guess comments like these reversed his decision on it.
But i still don't see what Tesla has anything to do with a freakin headphone
So, the overpressure is blowing upwards. That's where my glasses normally are situated. Air blowing from mouth and nose over glasses a cold day tend to result in fogging on the lenses...
air blowing over eye balls usually make them dryer too
nope, air coming from your mouth makes your lens fog. but here you have air from outside, just mixed now and then with your exhales. it would be mostly dry air.. no fog .. but your eyes may suffer from this.
Maybe Dyson thinks that the people who can afford their product can also afford laser eye surgery.
That’s because your breath is humid
I always find it really funny when Zack references Marques' review titles.
Ikr😂
Ono title got changed sadge
He changed it 😢
What was the old title?
If only he watched that video as well. Marques and Dr. Mike made it very clear that this thing is, in fact, worse than nothing in every way.
You're right, it's "not as dumb as I might think".
It surpasses my pre-existing thoughts of how dumb this 'dyson marketing thing' seems.
I'm shocked that MKBHD is the only major reviewer I've seen with a worthwhile take on these pieces of overpriced garbage
True!
I'm actually surprised that Zack thinks this is a good idea, I really respected his opinion on many things, but not this one.
Both MKBHD and Dr. Mike gave a good perspective about how dumb this really is.
@@shirocat_shirocat kinda disappointed in Zach. He seem to lose touch with the community more and more lately. Pumping out low effort videos that make the impression to be only there to get a sponsorship. At least this video was better than the last few.
I thought this video provided some helpful context on:
- how over pressure filtering works
- who else uses over pressure filtering
- how scents can still get through a fine filter
I don’t see this video as an endorsement, it more feels like a clarification of the fundamentals that make it work.
@@billigerfusel you act like you were paying for his content…
I think the only criticism aside from looking dumb is that it filters don’t do as well as an N95 mask.
well, it lets you breathe easier. i take it as a plus
@@ismaelyu5 , that doesn't mean much. I take it that you're implying N95 is hard to breathe through. N95 is bottom of the barrel for PPE. I have a P100 respirator and I can breathe just fine. That Dyson unit looks like 100% overpriced trash and in no way should be considered to be protecting you like PPEs a fraction of it's price would.
Oh and its a 1000$. Aside from it not actually working, according to mkbhd
@@daveubermensch i know there are better solutions out, but none of them would be as easily to use and not complete cover your face when you just need a filter for most allergens. I know a lot of ppl who don't like to go outside in spring because of that. And they wouldn't put on a normal respiratior. I could imagine this thing where you just but the visor down to talk would be easier to use in that case.
And none, even not the doctor at mkbl did mention anything about allergens and if its working, everyone is just making assumptions.
Imagine if this had been released before the pandemic, the enormous sales Dyson would have generated
I guess they lost that train..... it would have given them a huge profit :)
If they come out with a version where it actually covers ur face im game!
it was released during you idiots
Razor gaming had something like this that came out in the middle of it and people forgot about it
Heck yeah democrats would have bought them by the truck loads
Heres another example. On main battle tanks like the M1A2, it has what's called the NBC (Nuclear, biological, chemical) system. And it dose the same thing, it filters air then pressurize the inside of the tank where no contaminated air can come in
John Deere, and other Ag equipment brands, have been using positive airflow for decades (since at least the 70s) to help keep excess dust out of their equipment cabs. Many cabs have a small interior air filter and a larger pleated outside-air filter. Though the pleated outside-air filter is not usually a heppa filter (newer sprayers can have pretty good filters). One set of fans pull air through both filters simultaneously, thus slightly pressuring the cab. Works decent until someone opens the door wide open just as you've stopped in a cloud of dust! If you ain't dirty!
This system is the equivalent of attempting positive airflow with your door open halfway.
I would like to point out that a full-face respirator that is OSHA compliant & have a NIOSH rating gotten from a reputable seller is only ~250-300 and with the right set of filters will keep you from getting dead if dealing with actually hazardous air where as the Dyson will do practically nothing
Edit: For a forced air hood respirator you can get one with NIOSH rating for ~450 so still better than the Dyson because it can actually protect you from things
and for working in an IDLH (immediately dangerous to life or health) environment you can get a SCBA for ~3k
I don’t think Dyson is targeting industry workers who need full protection for work.
They are targeting people who want to walk around the city, go on subways, and have good air quality while listening to music and not look stupid.
But they do look stupid, and that’s the problem with it.
It does do a great job, better than your cheap cloth masks. but people would likely feel more normal wearing n95 than this. But also true is it’s nicer to breath out of this than an n95(properly fitted)
@@korvish111 I'm just pointing out that a real forced air respirator from a reputable supplier is a fraction of the price and has actual ratings to prove that it does anything so someone would be much better off getting one of those and a high quality headset for the price
@@crazy_human2653 yeah but you are really, really missing the point.
It’s almost like comparing a cordless saw vs a corded saw. “If you really wanted power get a corded saw, and it’s cheaper, therefor cordless is stupid”.
Or even worse, it’s like if Apple started marketing using their phones’ flashlights underwater and you saying “I can get much cheaper, actually water proof rated flashlights that can be used 100m under water”. Not exactly the intended use case of an iPhone flashlight.
Dyson’s big miss is how stupid this thing looks. If was actually nice, it would be a hit. Decent air filtration, comfortable, headphones for audio, it would be a great public transport commuting device.
Also remember this was in the works before COVID, which has changed everything. If you see someone in an n95 it’s 100% acceptable now.
I think I'll still just keep my computer desk inside my Model X, thanks.
6:38 I just bought the hair dryer two weeks ago and my wife started talking about her desire for the hair straightener, so I was naturally confused why would you consider these headphones over those top notch products. Then it hit me, lol.
No one cared who I was 'til I put on the mask.
That flimsy plastic is criminal for 1k $... It would not have changed much in terms of price to make it brushed aluminium I think, and it would have made the product look like something else than a low cost power ranger helmet toy.
"while Air filteration is important
Air pressure is more importanter"
- Zack
Stupid take. Yeah sure the concept of overpressurization is fine, but without any proper testing you can't be like "yeah same concept so it works and better than nothing". I mean compare it to your woodworking mask, the thing is pulled tight to your face with a rubber seal all around. Not some cheap plastic garbage with huge gaps all over the place.
exactly, all those examples he shows created a "sealed" enclosure, without it there is no over pressurization lol I feel like Zach is trolling here, he def saw MKBHD vid and knows how blowing air into your nose can actually cause even more problems...
Zack looks like Bane with the headphones on. " 'Ah you think Mohs Scale of Hardness is your ally? You merely adopted the Scale. I was born in it, molded by it."
How did a bunch of dyson engineers invest something worse than wearing a respirator with fams and hadphones seperately.
It's marketing and it clearly works
Even If I have the money, I still wouldn't buy one. 😅
@1st4mendment no they wont, this will only appeal to the type of people to wear a full body armor made of gold
Ships also use positive and negative pressures when fighting fires, dealing with hazmat spills, and/or performing repair work while in the yards. It creates a push-pull environment that helps vent all the nasty particulates out of the ship.
Love that you're working with LTT, love their channel
MKBHD mentioned in a Q&A that he believes the most important part of being a tech youtuber is being a "pro" consumer, with the technical side of tech being less important. Now I get exactly what he meant after watching Zach sing this "product's" favours for 7 minutes, while never once talking about the wearing experience, or how they sound, or how loud spinning fans are right next to your ears. Truly greateful some youtubers haven't completely lost touch with reality
Agent 47 looks sick in that headset-mouth mask combo.
Lol ..I swear thats why I subbed years ago....the only Hitman that Assassinates 'Warranties' lmsao
“And if you’re thinking ‘wow that’s a bit smaller than I thought’, you’re definitely not alone”
I mean, Linus stepping down as a CEO of Linus tech tips is indeed a real story. But never thought Zack was the one pulling the stinging all along. well played.
I mean, if i were so worried, wouldnt i just use a facemask? its lighter, doesnt look as ridiculous, its cheaper and some models can be washed, like my underwear. And i dont need to wear the headphones to use it.
The fact that they charge 1000$ for it makes me think there has to be a market for these, and they overpricing for that same reason. They might be trying to start a monopoly of that market and i would be surprised if they allowed the device to be repaired by independent technicians, assuming its repaired at all instead of just replaced or destroyed by the company with the excuse of it being "dangerous" to repair, without any compensation to teh customer. Now im not saying theyre doing or gonna do that, because i dont know, yet.
P.S: Having a vibrating device attached to your body cant be good :/ a facemask sounds better and better by the minute.
For the first three minutes, I thought you were going to review them without dismantling the headphones, and then 3:56 - I remembered that I was watching your channel.
😂😂😂 Luxury furniture for hamsters?? Jerry just killed me and massacred Dyson in the process
At first I really thought he was going to sing praises. That took a sharp turn. 😂
One big issue with these is that they waste so much power and damage the filter unnecessarily. How much of that filtered air are you going to breathe in, and how much will just get lost around you?
For anyone who knows your style, you were over the top hilarious in this vid Zak! Ps. I love the way you showed how it's not a new concept with the Tesla and industrial mask.
Thank you!
As a concept-seems interesting and high priced, let the knock offs begin!
Will be soon on aliexpress for less than 100 bucks! 😅
I wish we could get some e-ink tablet durability tests and teardowns. Especially now that the color e-ink screens refresh fast enough to play video content reasonably well.
In 1000$ we can purify more air by planting trees.
Doesn't save you from possibly toxic gasses now a few years maybe but now not at all
My Xbox headphones have a 50mm driver, and Dolby Atmos, and cost $200. With the other $800, I could jerry-rig my own personal air filtration system!
My Bathroom Vent fan cover has a small speaker and its quite loud lol Amazing what the can do with speakers nowadays. Also looks like Dyson said nah let's not make something practical like a personal fan cooler ,let's make something as useless and expensive as humanly possible. Dyson is the new Sharper Image congrats 👏
They've always been that way.
I knew somebody who used to work for an inventor and when she heard the commercail for their vaccums she laughed. "Nobody makes 5000 prototypes, thats not how that works."
Hamster furniture....hmmmmm, but is it edible? Zach, your one twisted dude, I like that!
I live in Houston, TX. Through a scientific study, it was found that we breathe in a credit card worth of plastic weekly.
Yikes
They are smart for sponsoring this video, thats for sure... the rest of it - exactly as it seems.
Luxury furniture for hamsters hahaha, love watching your videos and eyes Zack!
Same principle as a pressurized aircraft cabin. Bleed air from the engine fills the cabin. Pushing in more air than it can hold… creating internal positive pressure (like a coke can). Over pressurization is released by set valves.
thanks for the advice, bought your knife and mugged someone wearing the Dyson air purifying, 975$ saved
A bit late to be released but kudos for trying, they are doing something that later will be enhanced and cheaper to make
Problem is the price. At £800 they are out of reach for many especially in a recession
Thanks for going over the headphones, I've beed wondering hoe good they are. Also that for the Tesla information. The headphones do sound like Dyson quality😂
I was going to buy one of your knifes but then someone came and gave me a Milwaukee's knife just like it.
Not as Dumb as You Might Think > Yup, it's Dumber
JerryRigEverything using a Milwaukee Fuel impact wrench, proves that he's a man of quality! 😏😏😏😏
"Let me show you" , goes on to unbox the whole Tesla next 😂😂😂
A Masterpiece on so many levels! This video shows again, that you are a real "gentleman". An inspiration. Thanks for being around!
This is a piece of "technology" I cannot justify, no matter what! Looks like a cool Halloween mask in my view. Sorry; not sorry. The better deal is getting 60 Jerry Rig knifes. Awesome Christmas gifts or stocking stuffers.
Before anyone fills that space. I'ma go ahead and start making luxury furniture for hamsters.
Great. Just what I needed. More knives. We do use them, so I guess I'll add 2 more to the collection. I should specify who gets what color in my will to prevent any fighting over them in the future.
Ordered. I think I should attach the matte black to the LTT orange or other neon colored one so I don't lose it.
6:03 That's what she said
LOVE THE NEW EDITING STYLE JERRY, keepin it fresh
Damn, the thumbnail is exactly like the one MKBHD made, same arrow
Didn't see that hair straightener and hair dryer coming 😂😂😂
Will this get a follow up, how good was the air filtration and how good are the headphones? A live demo of you walking down the street to see peoples reactions and standing behind a diesel truck, to check filtration.
Depends on the person is what I would have said. I doubt Dyson considered headphone fitting in their design.
most wholesome merge plug ever! 🥰
this was the uplift I needed today
Positive pressure, computers cases have same effect when you have more intake fans, then exhaust fans( More CFM going in, and less cfm's going out. It keeps dust out...
Air quality directly and immediately affects cognitive ability
They really turned the bear trap from saw into headphones
It's a refreshing take that adds some extra context. I love it.
Also, I always trust Zack to throw very clever shades at tech companies and friends. 😂
Keep them coming, Zack.
You're right, this product is not as stupid as I might've thought... It's way dumber! Some would say it's dumber than the law allows!
6:43 dude this joke flew over my head for a sec but as soon as I figured it out I was fucking dying bruh.
The mask, yes it seems dumb, but the jerryrig knife, no its essential
Love the knifes
I couldn't decide on blue or silver so I got silver painted it blue and lightly sanded it , so blue and silver 👍
Linus sells everything on his website in US dollars no matter where you are buying from or shipping to. So does dbrand, and most other brands. Which means, Canadians still pay shipping and import fees.
So you're saying I could save myself a 1000 bucks and not look stupid at the same time? awesome!
NYC needs this
imagine going out with this in public
I love this guy....the way he disassembles anything with no regards....it's invigorating....carry on bro 🙌🏽🤣😂
_Nobody cared who I was, until I put on the air purifier..._
This is like a complete opposite of MKBHD review
With all the microplastics, smoke, etc. in the air, it doesn't really strike as ridiculous to me. What's ridiculous is the price though.
I didn't even watch the video. I just liked it because I know my bedroom smells like shit.
0:00 / 0:03
"No one cared who I was until I put on the mask."
Zack puts on the Dyson
>"No one cared what I reviewed 'til I put on the mask..."
Good video! Too bad people hate the product so much they don’t want to try and learn the theory.
I’m curious for this to be actually tested in a lab. The theory sounds good, but does it actually provide over pressure while inhaling?
Not really. One normal breath is half a liter, while a deep breath is several liters. In any given breath you'll be pulling in air faster than the filtration system can produce it, meaning you'll be breathing in a pretty solid mix of both filtered and unfiltered air. If you make sure to breathe very shallowly or slowly, you can get the most benefit, but that's only realistic some of the time (not while doing anything remotely physical such as walking).
Its still unique and its nice to see somethings that are different
You should consider mentioning that carbon is a “sticky” molecule and is why it’s able to remove particles smaller then the fiber filter can’t.
I mean positive pressure is a thing.. but not testing the device to see if the effect actually works in the application gives the product too much credit. It almost certainly doesn't work, would require a huge amount of positive pressure due to the poor seal.
I think yellow and purple would be nice colors to add to the jerry knife collection
Its a "look at my company" marketing product
Need those LTE Orange and Marques Matte Black JerryRig Knives in my collection......
I miss that car
Vents straight into the eyes. Perfect for avoiding airborne pollutants.
Same as turning on the AC in your car. 🤷♂️
Maybe make it like a full face helmet... or a Megaman helmet. I dont know. Maybe it will look waaaaayyy better 😬
I mean it's more just marketing fluff for the same carbon filters all modern cars have. Like seriously, nearly all cars have them. Tesla does have the really fancy giant one, but considering most people never even replace those carbon filters, it doesn't seem most people care. Those carbon filters are supposed to be replaced every like 1 year or 12K miles. They have a really short lifespan and basically nobody takes care of them. Many just replace them with a basic filter anyways as those can be cleaned, you can't clean a carbon filter.
Is this to make fun Tesla?:
Jerry rig: yesn't
Why does Jerry look like Bane with those headphones on lol. “I was born in the darkness”😂
1hour late and LTTStore is already out of your knives. Hook us Canadians up, Zack. 😭
More are on the way!!
With the headphones and mask on Zack looks like Robocop without the mask!
This is why a positive air pressure PC gaming rig is better than a negative one.
Luxury furniture for hamsters is the next big thing!
I suppose these will be popular with the "wear mask while I drive alone in my car" crowd!
We were so concerned about whether we could, that we failed to consider whether we should.
Zack, how can you review a headphone without talking about the sound quality 😂 I was waiting to hear about how good the sound is considering the expensive price.
Thank you! Just commented the same thing. Scrolled through a few dozen comments and we are the only ones who care about this. The audio quality that is. I'm so confused as to why nothing was said about it...
