  • Maldives' recent actions have stirred diplomatic tension with India. It all began when senior Maldivian politicians made derogatory comments about PM Modi's Lakshadweep picture. In response, hashtags like #BoycottMaldives started trending on social media. While the Maldives Association of Travel Agents apologized, President Muizzu did not.
President Muizzu, elected on an "India Out" campaign, fueled strained relations by traveling to China. In a speech, he asserted Maldives' independence and hinted at breaking ties with India's influence. Reports suggest Maldives is seeking replacements for Indian dependencies, with China being a prominent candidate.
The President's speech indicated a shift in health care and education alliances from India to Thailand and the UAE. Tourism, a crucial economic lifeline, is being redirected from India to China. A 20-point agreement with China, including Belt & Road participation, was signed during Muizzu's visit.
China's Belt & Road initiative aims to connect East Asian and European countries through infrastructure. Maldives, strategically located, plays a key role in China's import-export routes. To ensure continued cooperation, President Muizzu asked India to withdraw military troops from tourist islands by March 15, 2024, essential for Belt & Road trade.
Trade-wise, Maldives plans to stop importing key goods from India, opting for agreements with Turkey and direct imports from Europe and the United States. A $37 million deal with Turkey for drones to patrol exclusive economic zone waters further signals a shift away from India's assistance in joint patrolling efforts.
