    ABOUT ME
    Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I hope you'll join me in this CZcams journey as I take you through all the tips, tricks and trade secrets I've gathered throughout the years. I hope I can teach you some of what I know, help you discover your creative voice and I hope you enjoy this Channel!

    Note to all, after the video posted I realized I got my pigment numbers mixed up and I was in fact using PR122 (Magenta) in lieu of PV19. PR122 and PV19 are both part of the quinacridone family so they will be lightfast no matter what. The “secret” ingredient stays the same PR207 (Quin Warm Scarlet) so I would just suggest that you see what you like best. Quin Pink also works very well, just a slight different end hue 👍

    • @CynicalSim
      @CynicalSim Před měsícem +2

      Awesome! Thanks for clarifying. It looks like you mixed a little more of the PR122 than the PR207, yes? I hope you do get your mix made, because I would totally buy it for convenience. 😆

    I love that you have found a solution to the Opera Pink conundrum. Perhaps Roman Szmal will bring out a Pink called "Margot" in honour of you and your quest. I think that would be amazing. DS moonglow would be my favourite "fugitive" colour (at least at the moment) 🤣😂. It has the ability to be dark and dramatic or light, delicate, and whimsical.

      I love Moonglow as well and was upset to discover that it is not lightfast even though they claim it is. It's possible to make your own "Moonglow" and have it be lightfast. • @syrinx9196
      @syrinx9196 Před 24 dny

      "Opera" is fancy misleading name for paint with rhodamine fluorescent dye in it. A "more lightfast" version has less rhodamine dye and more quinacridrone pigment. It's also less intense in terms of color when the dye hasn't yet faded from exposure to UV.

      Yes I was getting confused, and I may be mistaken but PR122 isn’t that lightfast either, it’s sort of ok. But I may try a rose from W&N or sennelier to mix with the scarlet and see. I know that PR122 definitely has that exciting zing of high pink you don’t quite get anywhere else.

    This is genius, for having cracked this pretty pink code!!! Now all Roman Szmal has to do is combine those 2 pigments and bring it out as a new color, named after you (hopefully)... and we will all SCREAM with delight and buy it as soon as possible! I actually avoided opera pink altogether because of the fugitiveness - and because I was certain that I'd fall in love with it too, thus spawning a love-hate relationship since it refuses to live up to my lightfastness expectations. Because nobody needs that kinda drama when they're trying to relax with their watercolors, LOL 😅😉

    Love this video!! Opera Pink is such an enigma.
    My favorite not-so-lightfast paint is W&N's Rose Madder Genuine. It's not just the color, it's the texture, and the smell. It's the whole experience of painting with it. Other colors can be a similar hue, but nothing smells like it. I still haven't found a match for the softness though. The other not-fantastically-lightfast one I like is Prussian Blue, but I have found other single pigment blues I like equally as well, in particular DS's Indanthrone Blue which is actually more intense and vivid. (I don't like the Turner version, it's dull and muted and very crumbly when it dries in a pan.)

    • @suzisandpiper
      @suzisandpiper Před měsícem +1

      Those are some of my favourites too, thanks for the heads up about DS Indanthrone. I find between the brands there are some marked differences in even the common colours. I love that Winsor & Newtons rose madder is a closely guarded recipe from the real plant, very hard to achieve the pink, most brands who try end up brownish. I must buy a tube, I only have a half pan and it doesn’t smell of the plant.

    • @kraznia
      @kraznia Před měsícem

      @@suzisandpiper The scent is soft, not a punch like cologne, but it's there, gentle like the hue. Even dried down in a pan from the tube, I can still smell hints of the flower when I rewet the dried paint from the pan. I so adore the smell of (most) fresh flowers, especially roses and lilies.

    This is awesome!! I have for years wanted to have an opera rose in my paint sets but none of the set I have purchased had it and I just never reached out and bought a single tube as they are so expensive and I just made due with permanent rose. So I went to check my mission gold pure pigment set of watercolors and wouldn't you know I have those same 2 exact pigments needed to make a Lightfast opera rose. I proceeded to test them and it looks as if it worked well enough, granted I don't have to actual color to compare it to. I then went on to see if any of my students grade watercolors had similar colors to mix and see if it would work. Obviously they won't be lightfast with students paints but I have them and use them greatly will be teaching a class with them at our homeschool group. The Mei Liang Pretty Excellent palette permanent rose and scarlet lake mixed beautifully to make this opera rose color I have been wanting since I started watercolor back in 2021. Thanks you Margot for all your hard work to find this color combo. I'm so excited about it! Now I think my set of mission gold combo is lightfast as they are professional grade, but it great that it's works with student grade as well. Color mixing is so fun to me and I'm always blown away at the results! I do have a question: if I use dorland's wax to finish and seal a painting does that protect it from UV and light fading?

    It actually is impossible, since the thing that actually makes "opera" paints what they are (fugitive and more intense) is rhodamine dye, which is fluorescent. No fluorescent dye is lightfast. Mixing various quinacridone pigments will never enable someone to obtain the intensity of fresh (not UV-faded) paint with rhodamine dye in it. One may be able to find the particular hue but not the level of intensity. In fact, the more colored pigments are mixed together, the lower the intensity. Except in mixtures with white, single-pigment paints always have more intensity (when comparing the same pigments - there are some variables such as grind size for some pigments that can affect intensity).

    My alternative is easy it's a brand.... QoR. They make tge garentuee to discontinue any color not passing lightfastness tests. Their quinacridone magenta is lovely. As is their quinacridone violet. I've never used any opera pink but I imagine those two colors are both brighter and both dilute to tge softest pinks quinacridone red is also a lovely pink. Anyway just saying I'm a QoR girl though. # not sponsored but wishing I were

    I don’t much like Sennelier’s Opera. I prefer Holbein’s and my favorite is Bright Rose because it’s bluish undertone. But their Opera is my favorite Opera. Bright Violet is another one that’s gorgeous. Love it!

      I just looked up Michael Harding's watercolors to purchase a scarlet and they make an Opera Rose. It is listed as PV122 and says it's lightfastness is good. Any thoughts on "good" lightfastness?

    PR122 or PR 202 ?

    🎵Pink goes with everything ! 🎵"Quinacridone Barbie", I saw you! 🤣 Jokes asides, I loved this video : the editing was just perfect. 👌 My favourite pink is Helios purple from Sennelier (PR122) because I prefer opaque colours over transparent ones, and the lightfastness is better too. If I want something more transparent I choose Quinacridone magenta from Winsor and Newton over Opera Rose from Sennelier because I'm not a fan of fluorescent. This is just not my taste. But I would definitely give your mix a try. Thank you Margot! 💗

I would love to try this pink, as I have also been on the hunt for a pigment that balances lightfastness with vibrancy, creating my own mixes and testing various brands over the past 2 years. 👏 Margot, I love that you channeled your focus into creating this solution and beautiful colour! I have been looking for a flat metal box like the one at 8:14min, which hold your beautiful collection of Roman Szmal, and your RSz swatch videos helped me start my own (now at 38 colors). Hi Margot, this is a truly awesome discovery. I do have a couple of questions, I'm seeing two quin scarlets on RS colour chart, the quin warm Scarlet is listed as pr207, but the quin Scarlet isn't listed for its composition. Which of the two was it you used. Also was it pr122 magenta you mixed or pv19, as RS don't have a pv19 magenta. Pr122 is usually more punchy as a pink too, depending on brand. Daler Rowney's is a vivid bright orchid blue pink. I suspect Daniel Smith's pv19 rose would do well as I find it slightly bluer, a bit more vivid than some other brands.
