And will continue to. I wouldn't mind betting that the tax laws won't affect them because it will be paid for by.........The Tax Payer. If anyone doesn't believe that, look at the pensioners fuel allowance being axed, yet the MPs still get their second home fuel allowance.

Starmer, Tony Blair, Dianne Abbott, Harriet Harman, Emily "As a mother, I will never apologise for doing the best for my kids" Thornberry and probably many others ensured, as the man says, they bought houses within the catchment area of the best state schools or chose selective schools.

I work in an industry that deals with migrants and refugees indirectly.
Something that isn’t mentioned is the numbers of children arriving that have a refugee parent or a parent living here as a ‘skilled migrant’
An example was a guy I dealt with last week. He had been granted refugee status by the government early 2024. This allows him family reunification rights. He had collected his 6 kids (ranging in age from 5-16 yrs old) from Istanbul (he was from Tajikistan) and was bringing them to live in the U.K. so needed school places for his kids none of whom spoke English
Then there was an Indian care worker who had arrived to work in a care home in East London, a minimum wage job. She arrived with her 9(!!!!) kids and husband who spoke no English. They all required school places
These are just 2 examples of thousands of such cases
Or the Roma who marry at 13 from Bulgaria or Slovakia who have 10 kids by the time they are 30. Or the Ukrainians who have arrived (200,000 of them), with children requiring school places. They all require school places
The list goes on and on and on of people who make no contributions but expect free education, healthcare and care and pensions for elderly relatives who have also joined them
There just aren’t enough resources, schools or teachers
    It is genuine madness

In UK teachers are now basically people who left school , went to University for a Teaching degree and go back into school as a teacher at age 21 years old. Very little life experience or business or social experience. BUT, if you think education levels have slipped, take a look at the education levels in USA. Most people in USA leave school and dont know even basic knowledge of mathematics, English, history, geography, sciences AND dont really seem interested in much at all. Politicians dont want smart people who ask questions. This is possibly deliberate dumbing down of the general population in the West. Asia and particularly India and China, is bringing forward the smart kids now.

So long as they step the VAT rate, the private sector education might survive.
I'd introduce a 5% rate the first year in 2025, from April onwards and then increase it to 10% in 2030. I'd stop at 10% for education. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to apply the top rate of VAT, so I would ask government to take the stepped approach to allow people to adjust to the new expectations for taxing education.

Labour have always had one overriding policy: levelling down. Of course Labour MPs will always find ways for themselves and their family to wriggle out of this. Tony Blair made a big thing of sending his kids to state school. But isn't it strange that this school WASN'T a local one in Islington where he lived, and was better than a lot of private schools.

Poor attitude to learning is a major issue - there has been a massive "anti education" and devaluation of education in students and parents (and some teachers) over the past decade, more predominantly seen in state schools - parents who scrimp and save to send their kids to private understand the importance of education in modern society and our future. As a teacher myself we took the decision to home school our kids owing to the terrible state of the local schools (can't afford private school fees on one salary).

The labour governments after the war gave scholarships to private schools. They were called Direct Grant Schools. I got a scholarship in 1958 and eventually spent 43 years doctoring. Never went on strike once! I wouldn’t have been able to do that even if I went to the state grammar school.

I was an 11+ failure from many years ago & from a very poor backround. so have no axe to grind. But Labour seem to forget that many private Schools do offer those from poor backrounds the chance to have places which they would otherwise not get. I think if I was a parent now if I could afford it I would send my Kids to a Private School simply because (not always) they offer better education. The Old system of second rate if you did not pass the 11+ was very wrong but if I had taken that exam at about age 14 I would easily have passed .

Private schools just need to change to becoming an NGO just like many universities. They'll carry on not paying tax and can keep paying the same wages and charging the same fees etc. only difference is any profit made needs to be re-invested and spent on the organisation within 3 years and not taken out as cash or paid as high bonuses. This only forces the private schools to do this, which arguably will make them even better and Labour still get 0 money from them.
