Pro skaters like Oksana Baiul were putting in well over 360 performances touring non-stop. That kind of performing creates wear & tear on the body showing up in foot problems, tendon tears and overuse injuries. You couldn't walk or work in 30 seconds in her shoes/skating boots. Great exit flow and aplomb on the landing of the salchow - a really beautiful glide there and such confidence and aplomb in the landing and flow and skating skills and style! The footwork is so inventive and emotive and she is an absolutely magnetic skater who is a true great of the art and sport. The switch-lunge into a gliding split is really cool too, and the landing/end pose is a really interesting artistic choice at the end which is also skated with such flow, confidence and aplomb. I love her emotion and presence on ice and she has such delicacy, dexterity and beauty too.
She is a wonderfully gifted talent. But her team was more concerned with cashing her in to make money rather than developing her to full potential. She never learned to properly duet or perfect her jumping ability despite all the power she had I saw her live. Her jumps were bigger than the men! She could've challenged Sonja Henie but she didn't have the support-- its everything. She should've developed herself as a pro dancer rather than a skater. Skating lacks discipline & a future.
You're ignorant. Get your feet in a pair of skates on a sheet of ice and try a basic forward crossover with grace and elegance. Stitches, broken bones, fractures, bruises. Get your lazy ass up at 4:30 am daily for years if your $ allows. By the way, smoke - drink- stay up all hours and do it again the next day. No need for discipline. Support? Petrenko. @@ronniec68 You are right. Back then they fell hard on the ice over and over again learning jumps...Now it's a bit easier on the young ones with harnesses held by coaches. Still to get as far as she got ...it takes tremendous hard work, discipline ... not to mention nerves of steel . There has been some horrific accidents with the pair skaters. Yet they go on and continue perfecting their sometimes very dangerous moves . The average person would fall and say "Forget this " and move on to a safer sport. There are several very dangerous sports that are engaged in and Figure Skating (especially Pairs) is one of them. I admire people with talents that few of us have .It takes guts to be thrown up in the air at high speed on the ice and come down with arms, gracefully, outward stretched ,having faith that your partner is there to catch you. These people are unique , special in the World of Sports .I feel the same about Olympic Skiing. If something goes wrong .....it really goes wrong .They have guts . I admire that , along with their special abilities....just my thoughts on it.
