Congratulation, Chef John. CZcams would be a dull, dismal and far less delicious place had you not started making your awesome cooking videos way back when... We love you xoxo
Thank you, my friend! You were an early inspiration (and continue to be)! XOXO
No, Chef, the key to your popularity and the reason 'why people enjoy your videos' is Not the fact that you don't appear in the videos and 'people are cooking along with you this way' blabla ,
but: YOU :) your personality!!
he is honest and I think it's fair to get paid on two ways
totally! and filming, editing, buying materials for, etc., takes a lot of time and costs money! the least you can do is ignore some ads so he can keep making videos lol
At least your honest about the ads and making the $$
very true. i do like his candidness, and he deserves it. His idea is original, one i have rarely seen. The whole no appearing on camera, focus on food, is a new twist that I enjoy. Removes the ego out, and helps use to visually appreciate the food a lot more via close up versus the focus on cook....
And btw, most youtubers don't mention it at all because they aren't exactly supposed to direct youtube watchers into clicking ads and therefore earning money. It's not really as hush hush as people seem to think, it's just not generally talked about because of guidelines.
"I mean it's one of my secrets for staying in such great shape" lmao this guy is too muchEdit: Damn I just randomly came back to this video 2 years later. thanks for all the likes lol.
You don't need to appear on camera... i can see your face everytime you use your metal bowl
I love your face! You're so incredibly entertaining and genuine. I really trust you when it comes to cooking. I don't think I've ever used exact measurements myself, so I totally get the "when it feels right" instructions. There are lots of times when I ask what everyone wants for supper and someone (in my family, I don't hear random voices...I think) suggests we "see what Chef John is making". You're doing a great job and I hope you absolutely do continue to make videos for the next ever. Yes forever. P.S. I saw that catwalking/Vogue/WORK! through the garden, girl. :) hugs from my family VIVA LA CAYENNE!!
Thank you chef John!
A few years ago I lost a job. Instead of being a good boy and getting another job I took some time to learn how to cook for my family. Mostly by watching your videos. Eventually I started my own business. (not food related) But I've never stopped cooking for my friends and family. This year, for my birthday, I cooked all day and fed a neighborhood in Portland with mostly your recipes. (grandma's apple pie slipped in) Thank you for changing my life. (mostly in the middle section)
Eli
P.S. I've poisoned my wife with Cayenne for long enough now that she will order Medium hot when we go out.
"Completely legal, completely ethical..... I guess"
I've been following this channel for almost 5 years now. Linking your voice with an actual moving picture of you and just seeing the kitchen where all the cooking happens... it just made me euphoric. You really made my day. :)
PS. For all the people saying he only cares about money for trying to double the profit, well, he's trying to make a living! I'm sure that editing the blog is a lot of work as well. Plus, it's not like he doesn't deserve it. I actually think it's really smart of him. Not to mention he's being honest and straightforward about it. I'm sure if anyone's made any of his delicious recipes, you'd feel like you owe him AT LEAST that much!
Shorty2488
Buying stuff for a recipe for you to cook is hardly John's responsibility. LOL
Also it's not like he is taking money from us directly. He is just making us click ONE more time on the link to his blog. If that's what people are blaming him for they probably have other issues they should look into.
Renlish I think they mean the cost of the ingredients is a part of the channel's expenses, so ad revenue is a fair trade back.
Renlish Uh, I may be mistaken here, but I think Shorty2488 meant that Chef John has to pay for the ingredients in his recipes, so while he's showing us for free, he's spending money.
I'm going to make your kitchen in the Sims 4... it's BEAUTIFUL
I want my kitchen to look like that! It's not a HUUGE space but it's so tidy and beautiful. I loved it!
Don't be so hard on yourself. I think you're a super handsome guy.
Chef John is absolutely right. I'm a restaurant chef myself and yes... it is incredibly hard, low paying, and stressful. The servers and bartenders do seem to have much more fun and make loads more money.
it must be a good way to learn though. if you're in it for the experience and education, it would be worth it, right?
yeah and you really have to love your craft, in revel in the prep and execution of a variety of recipes over and over to the best of your ability.
In Europe a chef is been paid salary, plus a procentege from what the kitchen sale, like 2% or so
Yep. I only did it for five years when I was young…pot washer, cook, waiter, and bartender, and I knew that I was never going to make a life long career of it. It was good because it was something where you could always make ‘support money’ while in school or on your way to where. But….everything they say is true, it’s hot, hard, sweaty, and the temptation to drink too much after hours is always in front of you. The camaraderie amongst the workers is truly a good thing and to be an owner and run the place usually means you will not be part of that club. It’s not easy being boss. I never lost the love of cooking food though and have maintained it for these many decades.
" Will you Marry me? " ... is the question I see asked of you the most : ) What a lovely smile you have chef John...
LOL , ok..@Micky.. I am not asking Chef John to marry me.... I said it is one of the question " I see" asked of him the most. ; P.. : )
People like the videos not because of the camera angle or the shooting technique or that they can "cook with you" or something like that. People like your videos because you're awesome. Because the recipes are good, because your sense of humour, because you're not too serious about too many things and you don't force people to buy exotic ingredients that they never going to use again. Because everything you cook looks like an easy upgrade of something our grandmas would cook.
People love your videos because you're awesome! At least that's what I like about the videos.
Can't wait for 2000th video. I have a question.
lmao how many videos does he have currently? should be getting close lol
chef john, i haven't slept in 30 hours. i always find myself watching your videos late at night to cheer me up. i know it sounds crazy but you've gotten me through so much depression. especially in college. cooking has given me something to look forward to. i always die laughing at your jokes because your voice just fits so well and the timing is always perfect. you honestly deserve EVERY view!!!! ignore the people that are complaining...come on, even jenna marbles made your pumpkin pie!!! just want to thank you for being such a great guy! i hope to meet you some day :) hope you have a great day!!!
congrats!!! i totally agree with the answer for Q1. and i think it is too much work to shoot and edit if you appear in camera. hehe but nice to see you once in a while ;)
your kitchen and garden look nice and comfy!!! i like the way you use the sunlight. it makes the food looks really delicious. that is how i save money, too~ :)
I'm smiling ear to ear! Thanks Chef John
Food wishes has brought me from grilled cheese sandwiches to Clifton springs ginger garlic chicken wings. My football buddies all kick money for me to whip us a tray of these. Thank you chef John for showing me a new path to happiness.
More! More! More! I was bummed when this video ended because I truly enjoyed it, just as much as I enjoy all your other videos. And by the way, visiting your blog is such a treat because your blog entries are not only entertaining but informative as well. Thank you for all your work!
without exaggerating or anything, one of the godfathers of modern cooking methods, all my cooking i learned watching your delicious videos, cheers...!!!
People enjoy your vids...cause your voice is memorizing, your puns are funny cause you are natural saying what is on your mind, your receipes are exciting to learn, etc...and lastly you are one of the most exciting cooking teachers we can ever find on CZcams!!! You are our beloved You Tube Chef John!!!!
that last bit when you said your signature "enjoy" into the camera, really put a smile on my face! thank you so much for your hard work to bring us amazing dishes. You're truly amazing at what you do.
You've made plenty of great recipes that have saved my ass at events for quite a few years man, best of luck to your channel and endeavours in the future :)
P.S don't ever change the jazzy tune in the background, makes every video feel cozy as fuck.
@FoodWishes there is a recipe for this video.
1 cup Chef John.
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon snarkiness.
You're a comic chef john.
Hi Chef John and all the Food Wishes team, thank you very much for your hard work and inspiration, you have a big fan in Mexico and you have inspire me to get in the kitchen. I did not had the chance to go to Culinary School but love to cook, so you are basically my school and I am learning a ton of things from you. My favorite dish so far is the Lasagna, it has become my signature dish with my friends, we all love it, and thanks to you I use CAYENNE pepper in almost all my food and I love it. Thank you very much, God Bless you all and I am looking forward for your next 1000 videos. CONGRATULATIONS...!!!!
I do have to hand it to Chef John, I think his format does encourage learning how to actually cook.
"Completely ethical, I guess" lmao
Chef John, you are one of the most honest men I've ever seen. I love it!
Lol at least he's honest
The continuous focus on the food is what makes Food Wishes the best food channel ever! No one else tells us what to look for and how to read the signs at just the right moment -- bubbles around the edge, shimmer in the oil, the first wisp of steam, the streak when you pull the spoon across the bottom of the pan, the stages of browning without burning, the fond. Thank you Chef John for your generosity of spirit, it's what makes you the greatest chef of all, feeding the most people by showing us how to make the best food for ourselves! And no showing off! 💖💖💖
Thanks for everything, Chef John. I love to eat but hate to cook (and clean) so when the budget is too low to eat out I always watch your videos to drum up enthusiasm to get into the kitchen. You're the best!
This is the first video of yours I've ever seen. I just discovered you. I think I'm in love already. Can't wait to see an actual cooking video!
you are in for a treat! I remember my first day. It was like 2 hours of video watching lol
You may need to take a few days off of work for this...just saying. It's that good.
I highly recommend you head straight for his "Chocolate Lava Cake 2" video! That's how I first discovered him and perhaps the first time I've laughed out loud during a cooking video... Much love Chef John you sarcastic son of a b ;)
Ashly C I discovered him on the Roku channel AllRecipies.com. I think it was his baked Chicken parm I watched and loved his show ever since. Ironically that recipe did not turn out good for me but all his others has,
thank you for sharing your wisdom over the years chef john
You definitely don't have a voice for newspaper.(rimshot) You have such an upbeat voice that you inspire people to try the recipes that you show. I love the humor you inject as well. It just makes cooking seem a lot harder than some shows make it out to be. Just try, that's all you preach. And if things don't go as planned, don't give up.
"Theres no paint by numbers in the museum, theres a reason for that. k" so great 😂😂😂
I actually added that to my collection of famous quotations. Seriously. it is just too cool.
I've always wanted to see chef John's face when he says 'enjoy', and I wasn't disappointed.
Holy jaysus he hardly blinked throughout the video O.O
You're exactly right,I hadn't noticed til I read your comment...I couldn't do that if I tried.lol.
That was the first thing I noticed. hahah. I was wondering why it seemed like he was staring into my soul.
I loved this video! Love all your videos..but seeing you makes me smile even more! =)
Honest, direct answers! Respect!!
"Hours are long but at least the pay is low" that is exactly why I decided to check out other jobs and cook for fun.
I'm up for it. Look forward to seeing you again around the year 2020.
I love your style of presentation, it's about the food and sometimes presenters are distracting and some of the more flamboyant ones are annoying. Your recipes are doable and delicious and you look like a kindly uncle :)
Just wanted to thank you. Found you through your Greek Lemon Chicken & Potatoes, and I'm a huge fan. Thanks again.
Hi Chef John,
I was here on CZcams before you began. I noticed your channel which stood out over all other cooking channels. I think I was one of your first eight Subscribers. I Subscribed using a different account than this one.
I Subscribed to your channel and offered help getting started. I even directed you toward StartUpNation.com. You tried to register but doing so produced error messages. When this channel earned around 24 Subscribers or public for 24 days you became a CZcams Partner. I sent a message congratulating you.
Over the years I've recommended your channel to friends and family. I've watched nearly every video you've uploaded here. I cheer you on again and say Congratulations on reaching your 1,000th video upload.
Yeah Kaizen Master you are correct good sir, John has*(edited) an incredible page and excellent recipes, we are more like each other than we think.. Lol
Now that I've seen your face. .. I still say you are the sexiest cook on youtube.
Xoxo
Thank you for the honesty in this video. You are the bestest!
What about Byron talbot. I'm not gay but a lot of people in the comments say he is pretty hot
Just type in Chef John in youtube and you would have seen him way earlier..he did an dozen of interviews on other channels. Lookup "Sizzle reel - Cant boil water"..i wonder why it never made it to a tv show =)
You have a fantastic voice, and watching the food instead of watching you cook does indeed draw me into the vid.
#1 question is exactly what it is all about. You give great direction. Cooking is good!!
I love how honest you are about making money :) you seem like a smart guy
Ingredient amounts for this video:
1 Middle aged cook
1 Microphone
1 Camera
Add to kitchen and stir.
Let it sit for 1 hour.
Remove content and put it in front of computer for 2 to 4 hours.
Enjoy the result.
Awesome! Love the explanation on why no written recipe!
Chef John you are absolutely beautiful - inside & out 💕💕💕
That was awesome! If you knew him, and you should by now if you've been watching for awhile, the money part was mostly tongue and cheek. Truth is he loves what he is doing, he's very good at it, and we don't pay one cent! What's to criticize about that?
I think he's straight up honest when he tells that if he can make money twice, he'll make money twice and that making money is important for him. I don't think there's a shame in telling the truth. I also go to work first and foremost to get paid. I love the work, but without the pay I wouldn't be able to live! Chef John really relies on making his money by making these videos. It's nice that cooking also happens to be his passion!
Your voice is so soothing. Sorry if that sounds weird, but it does. Can't wait until I'm older and have a small house with an organized and no GE appliance kitchen. Though I will probably miss making Baguettes in an oven that tops out at 400 degrees. Happy 1000 video!
Chef John must be one of the most honest youtubers of all time :3
That was the cutest "Enjoy!" ever! ^_^
Chef John I love how honest you are! you keep doing you! and keep them dishes cooking!
If weren't for you I'd be living off ramen and fried eggs, thanks for everything chef John!
I've been asking myself the last question. The answer makes perfect sense, and it's one of the reasons why this is my favorite cooking channel on CZcams. Also, about you not appearing on the videos, and only closeups of the food, I agree with that: it does feel like we are cooking together, and not like I'm watching you cooking. Congratulations for the thousand videos, keep up the good job!
I LOVED your answer to the last question.
You're awesome, Chef.
I like your style (and your wicked sense of humour).
LOL this guy is too funny
John, your answer to the final question, (‘why no written recipe?’), is pure gold. All my life it has been the way I’ve learned to cook. (Well….baking is more recipe driven.) But you watch, you do, you take notes, you do again, and eventually you make it your own.
A movable feast is much more interesting than a wet lettuce leaf.
YAAAYY!! I finally get to SEE you say, "and as alweees..eenjoy!" Thanks for doing this "show-n-tell" video for us fans!
p.s. LOVE your retro 1960's game show host microphone [lol]
Ugh, I love your voice. It's so soothing.
Chef John...thanks for showing us you and your wife's cozy kitchen!!! O honestly feel that the unique format that you created is the very best way for people to learn!!!! But, you are so sweet and I feel that many of us would love to see you on the Food Network for Special Occasions Shows!!! We youtubers really appreciate your genuine and helpful natural!!! You absolutely Rock!!!!!!!
I appreciate your honesty, culinary skills, and sharing your world with us. Got used to your voice and love it now. You are not afraid to show your mistakes and let us know if it tasted bad. Keeping it real.
At least you're honest. I love it. DOUBLE DIP!!!
Chef John, please keep up the brilliant work. Hope there will be another thousand of your great videos. You encouraged me to try out new things because you just dont make it look easy, you really do give me the feeling that it is easy, and it works for me! Greetings from culinary Germany!
Also we still do not know the secret to the (single hole) holy wooden spatula!!!
Chef John: The Most Honest Man In Showbiz.
I love you Chef John!
Chef, you should consider the Amazon Associates program as well if there are some products on Amazon that you use in the kitchen. I'm sure lots of us would love to be using the same tools as you are, and you can earn about 10% of the cost of the items through your referral!
Hey Chef John. I've been following you for a couple of years, you're the best. I don't know why I'm just seeing these videos! You are so humble and modest, you're unbelievably gracious to show us how to prepare great food! Oh yeah, I made your Minestrone last night, WOW!
Thanks,
Charlie
This video made me so happy! I've seen SO many of your videos! I can't believe this just popped up in my recs today. But I'm glad it did. You are absolutely delightful, Chef John!
OMG CHEF JOHN YOU ARE MY IDOL!!!!!!
Oh, c'mon!
7 years, a 1000 vids, endless hours of raw video, and no gag reel ?!
You've got to be kidding!
Carlos Gomez SERIOUSLY!!! this video is a few years old. Chef John, give us the bloopers if you haven't yet.... (Off to go hunting now)
I am a Nanny and I started watching your videos with an 11yo who I am teaching to cook and she loves them as much as I do. Thanks for doing what you do.
Perfect description of how I've used the blog site/youtube videos!! My wife and I love it. Thanks for all you've done to add FLAVOR to our kitchen and marriage. We have tons of fun cooking together, and your recipes are a blast to make!
Thank you for all the recipes and being such an amazing guru! Whenever someone asks me about a recipe I dont have on my channel, I direct them to you
I was soooooo waiting to see his face while he said "Enjoy!" :))
Chef John, your energy is infectious. I've had a passion for food that has grown over the years, but your videos have really shown the incredible fun that cooking is, and how to just throw oneself into the process with gleeful abandon. I'm always thrilled to see a new upload on this channel. Here's to another 1,000!
Chef John, what you do and how you do it is just perfect. My favorite cooking show ever.
Thanks for being you in every way.
While I'm glad you aren't in the recipe videos (I agree with your method, I like being captivated by the food alone), I really enjoyed seeing you in person in this video. I've always loved your deadpan humor, but I often imagine that you're cracking up under your breath. You proved me wrong in this video, though...you keep a completely straight face during your jokes, and I think that's awesome.
Been watching the cooking videos for years, my go to website for cooking ideas. But you should do stand up on the side, seriously! I was actually LOL ing. Keep up the great work! BTW I've stolen your " give it the ol' shaka shaka" and have passed it off as my own, but got caught the other day by a friend..."that's Chef John!' DOH!!
I love you chef John!! You're amazing!
i have such respect for your cooking and the philosophy behind your teaching style! And your format with your friendly narration and the focus on your technique is perfect. Here's to the next thousand! Thank you so much, Chef John.
It's like seeing the real santa is so cool
I like the curtain rod idea.
This is, hands down, my most favorite ever video of yours, Chef John. Thank you!
Thank you, chef John! Congratulations! Many more to come...
OH MY GOD CHEF JOHN YOUR FACE IS JUST AS MAJESTIC AS YOUR VOICE
TRUE. I ENJOY HIS FEATURES.
raphael!!
I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT
You took the words from my mouth 😄
Uncle Grim POTATOES!!!
