You can connect to the Free Wifi with your phone and then turn on your moble hotspot to use the Free Wifi. It will route it through your phone which has a browser. I don't know if iPhone does this but Android does

Mileage will vary on public wifi or LTE. That would be true for any gaming streaming device. Only major issue with Portal is the browser thing they need to solve.
There is a work around using a laptop and changing the MAC address. I believe there are some videos out there to help. However this is not convenient whatsoever

As someone who has to work away from home during the week (unable to bring my Ps5 with) , the Portal has been a godsend. Can play my PS5 when I'd otherwise have to wait til the weekend to play.

Good download and upload speeds but again it didnt connect or had frozen problem..so wht should be ideal internet speed without any problem?? Otherwise no point to pay..
How did you get to connect i b away from home alot & i have problems trying to connect my portable to my ps5
@@Trillkev1 ideal if you have your Ps5 connected directly with lan wire to router or lan wire to range extender. Ps5 must be in rest mode and you need to turn on settings to turn on via WiFi, etc and make sure to turn off the sync with tv (setting where if you turn on your Ps5, you also turn on your tv) so that you don't have to worry about tv being on when you're away.
I play my Ps5 when I'm in a different town on a different WiFi network and it works great. Not good for competitive twitch shooters like cod but good for single player games and RPGs, etc
All it’s good for is if someone is using the tv in the house you can use the small hand held device

If you plan on getting a Playstation portal just to play away from home. I'd recommend looking into a windows handheld gaming pc
You’re right Marlon in that games installed NATIVE on a handheld will always be the best compared to cloud streaming/ remote play.
Here on the channel is a big focus on the ROG Ally PC handheld and this is an INCREDIBLE device!
Can someone put this thing on a GOOD external WiFi connection, like at a different house. That’s what I want to see. Not connecting to some piss poor network. We know that won’t work well.

It’s works bro at different house and really good, I’m a truck driver an it is amazing I use it anywhere like chicago , Denver literally anywhere while my PlayStation is back home

I really liked the device. I received it the day before the release into mass sales. At home it connects and works well, but we were never able to connect remotely from my friends house. Although all settings were correctly installed on both ps5 and PS portal, stable internet is 600mb. I don’t know what this is connected with, but I couldn’t connect.

You gotta port forward to be able to remoteplay from outside. There are guides (google portforward ps5 remote play)
You can buy unofficial cases for the portal
I live in texas where my PS5 resides and am on vacation at my wife’s family’s house in MA. Even on great wifi, the portal will not stay connected. Hope this gets fixed, however it seems this devise was really designed to be a second screen for home use.

I did want one due to sometimes wanting to play my PS5 around the house and not be stuck in the living room but a lot of my retailers sells out fast by me and their is so much damn resellers selling it for double the price it’s not even worth it.

I don't get how it doesn't have a browser. That's useless. But I'm sure Playstation either wants you to only use within your house, or so you wouldn't be able to download other streaming services (such as GeForce Now)

Sony will probably never add a browser because it can be used to hack the device in order to install custom firmwares which will do ps portal much useful.

I use my hotspot to use this device I noticed if u have a vpn activated while trying to connect to ur phone hotspot it won’t connect unless u turn off ur vpn.

This is exactly the test that I wanted to see. I’m gonna hold off on this device for now and stick to just using an ipad pro for remote play. The fact that it doesn’t even have a basic web browser to handle public wifi setup throws me off. Which means the portal won’t be able to connect even to high speed hotel wifi that requires logging in. 😢

Why would anyone connect to a public wifi. Would be crazy slow. Even at home to stream games it's rubbish. I do like this portal. But first I have to get a PS5 😅
@@rf6497 not really “public” wifi hehe. I’m talking about high speed hotel wifi whenever I go on trips. Almost all require a browser to login. But anyway, I probably belong to those minority with this use case 😁
People saying it can connect to your phone's hotspot. Yes because you don't need a browser for that. It can't connect to hotspots or public wifi that require a login.
Mobile hotspot can be hit/miss.
Works with some carriers, & doesn’t with others. Works with mine, but the gameplay can get very choppy/laggy.

I played my portal at the barbershop while waiting to get a haircut. There were no issues at all . I had the option of using the barbershop wifi or my cellphone hotspot .

It’s literally just another accessory to the ps5 you can’t even use it in a hotel bc there’s no web browser which makes no sense to bc it’s a portable device and that’s a bummer which is crazy to me bc I wasn’t even excited for it when it was coming out but I like the idea of play station coming out with a new portable device

This is so upsetting that it doesn’t have a web browser support to be able to connect to WiFi. I travel a lot and most hotels require a web browser. I really hope Sony fixes this soon!

Why would it have a web browser? It’s just a screen that mirrors the ps5….thats it nothing more.
If you really want to connect to a crappy public wifi, there is still a way if you have a laptop with you.
Just change your laptop's mac address to match your portals mac, then authenticate using your laptop. Next connect your portal. But public wifi is really not recommended.

Hey Dom thanks - yes as you can see in the vid the Portal is just too unreliable for playing away from home unfortunately… I got a Steam Deck OLED and this is PERFECT for playing away from home with a battery life of up to 12 hours so definitely consider this instead 🙌

Not great lol. Not much more than an hour for triple A games. I personally don’t worry about battery life though as I have a charger on the couch and also in bed 👍

Mine works fine with my iPhone 14 as a mobile hotspot so not sure why you were having issues. That said I’ve not tried it on any other hotspot other than my iPhone.

Dude - connect to the Nandos WiFi on your phone and then hotspot it to the portal. Much clearer and faster connection.
Most phones won't let you hot spot on WiFi. You are usually using hot spot because WiFi is not available.
@@Analyzer52 I believe that's an issue with iPhones, Android phones let you piggyback on the existing WiFi and use your phone to hotspot. I acknowledge that's not a solution for everyone though.
@Ceejaydee1978 I have an android and everytime I turn on hot spot it turns my wifi off. I'll try it again to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong
@@Analyzer52 Ah, maybe it's just the Android phones I'm familiar with (Google Pixel series, Samsung S Series, Sony Xperia series). Or perhaps there's a setting somewhere in the options. I know my iphone-owning friends don't have it as an option.
As an incidental aside, my Portal is actually clearer and faster when I'm hotspotting my phone from a Starbucks wifi than on my own home network... I suspect that says more about my rubbish home network though 😅

Hey Chris, in theory it SHOULD turn PS5 on when console is in rest mode, but as you can see from the vid the Portal is pretty temperamental… 🤷

I have a steam deck and my portal is ordered different device for different use
different controller en screen that is.. But your steamdeck can do the same as the PS Portal. The Portal cant do the same as your steamdeck tho

Change your hotspot wifi name & password to be exactly the same as your home router SSID

@@nwing07__ All you'll be doing is copying your routers WiFi access details, the same details you entered when you 1st setup the portal
Search your mobiles settings for hotspot name or tethering - then edit your phone's hotspot name / password to match
if you still can't connect your personal hotspot, it's likely an issue with your mobile networks "NAT type". Look it up
Portal $200: packaged in a french styled pull-out drawer with an external box

So you don’t have a back seat you could have layed it on lol
While many of the other stupid decisions Sony made with this device can be written off to corporate greed (like the lack of bluetooth connection, requiring you to exclusively use Sony's wireless earbuds)....why on earth would they disallow you to use it on public wifi networks that want you to sign in? Isn't that an overwhelming majority of public wifi spots? I am truly baffled.

Honestly as much as I love portable gaming this seems like such a useless device. It's really only good for using at home, and since you're at home you might as well just use the actual ps5.

Realistically, the Portal is just an alternative display for when your regular set up isn't accessible...
I've had some good use from mine so far, gaming time that I normally wouldn't have had as my wife and/or children are usually using the TV...

As long as the playstation itself has a solid connection and the portal has a connection about 50mbps then game play is very gd no other device can play remote play in the same way for a £199 accessory considering the edge controller costs £209 ain't a massive hole in the pocket like the rog ally and Legion Go ect
