Trying CHILEAN DISHES (Salmon Ceviche & Corn Pie 🌽) + First Impressions of PUERTO NATALES, Chile 🇨🇱

  • It was our first day in Puerto Natales, so we had to try some Chilean dishes and go out and explore the town!
We started the morning with a visit to The Coffee Maker, which is a really cool coffee shop located inside the Kau Lodge. Here we enjoyed a tasty brunch featuring cappuccinos, carrot cake with a lemon glaze, cornstarch alfajor, and salmon sandwich. Once we were well fed and bundled up, it was time to explore! We enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the waterfront which has plenty of landmarks to keep you busy. Here we came across the historic pier, the monument to the hand, the mylodon statue, the town sign and the monument to the wind - lots of cool sculptures in a very small stretch!
We spent the rest of the morning organizing some excursions, so keep an eye out for some prehistoric caves and a visit to Torres del Paine National Park in the next episode!
For dinner that evening, we decided to try some classic Chilean dishes. We had dinner at Espacio Ñandú, which is a super interesting space combining a restaurant with a souvenir shop. Sam ordered the chilean ceviche which is traditionally prepared with salmon. Meanwhile, I got the corn pie which was served bubbling hot in a cast-iron bowl with beef, chicken and a hard-boiled egg. It was a delicious meal and a great introduction to Chilean food.
That's what we got up to on our first day in Puerto Natales. It was pretty relaxed, but we got a good feel for the town. We'll see you in the next episode where we visit Chile's most iconic national park.

What's the name of that corn pie in Chile? I'd like to try one out...maybe find a recipe for it.
I was a little surprised to see salmon being served in South America because salmon is a fish that's naturally only in the northern hemisphere so I looked into it. I read that salmon was first introduced to Chile and South America in 1977. This may not have been such a good idea as it would have thrown the local ecosystem out of whack.
By the way, 50 Canadian beavers were brought to Tierra del Fuego in Argentina in 1946 in the hope of developing a fur trade. Instead, the beavers are chewing down the trees and there's no natural predator to stop them. Argentina and Chile should get some Canadian scientists to help get rid of the thousands of beavers since I'm sure they would have a lot of knowledge of beavers.
PS - I did a simple Google search and found lots of recipes for the corn pie aka pastel de choclo.

Well, I guess it’s like cebiche, to me I am Peruvian living in the USA for many years, I thought it was a dish that nobody else had it. Imagine my surprise when I learned and tried many cebiches from different American countries! They are similar but they are different! To me the Peruvian cebiches it’s the best !
I couldn’t imagine a cebiche with tomatoes or paltas ( avocados) in it, but the reality is a lot of counties have their own version of it.
It is the same with the corn thing. It’s not better or worse, it’s just different and similar at the same time . After all we are very similar ( people from SOuth America/ Central America )
We have, alfajores, tamales, empanadas, etc etc and so does many other countries.
