How to cut up shirts to make fabric: A tutorial showing how to cut up clothing to make quilts.

This is how I destruct shirts and get them to be usable fabric. When using this method, shirts can be destructed in about five minutes.

for work i had to go to the goodwill warehouse, on the way to his office the mgr took a route through the sorting area….the mountain of stuff was overwhelming to see…i can imagine they were happy to let you stuff and bag with clothes, because they have a mountain more to process through 😂….i agree that clothing quilts are instantly cozy

I like how you keep all the parts of the shirts together. I think I might switch to that. I’ve been keeping mine with all backs together, then fronts, then sleeves etc. I took a bin of fronts and sleeves and while watching tv, I cut into 10”, 8 1/2(cuz I have a ruler that size) and 5”, and so on. So I have drawers full of these sizes. I’ve been leaving the 5 inch strips and not cutting into squares., I’m thinking I might make a jelly roll race using the 5 inch strips joined on an angle. Just a thought I’ve been playing with. Let’s see if I ever get to it. I’ve been enjoying your newer videos, and decided to go back through yours and discovered this.Keep up the good work I’ve been enjoying.

I use a seam ripper to take shirts apart. I don't know why I enjoy ripping seams apart. May be I enjoy the quiet time.

another post from me….i’m new and keep learning more about you…i get clothes from my family, and from my closet, I love using fabric from clothes. My favorite quilts are scrappy…but i like completely scrappy and organized scrappy. I finished a plaid scrappy quilt recently, collected many different plaids over years, I only purchased the sashing fabric. I’m ready to begin making a sweater quilt, I thought this up years ago and have been collecting my sweaters, bought the sashing, each block will be a small square surrounded by the same color for all the blocks, so the sweater blocks can be different but the block can be made into the same size with the strips of cotton. Visually should end up being very vibrant, different sweater pile, colors, and size of the sweater square. I feel if the square doesn’t get too big it will hold shape better…plus it will have interfacing and backing fabric.
I also use clothing for doll clothes, the clothes look real, not all cotton…especially the coats and barbie gowns.

Jo, jo, i love just love how you demonstrated this....i did a few shirts and I used a ruler along the seams. Yes cuffs and top back piece has a good amount of fabric. Also love that you made a plan of how much you want to get done.....please keep videoing your ways....oh, by the way, love your kitchen area......

At noCal thrift shops, they ask $6 a shirt. I never pay more than $3, tho when I get them. I only buy XXL, which gives at least 3/4 to 1 yard.
I'm lucky where I am and can still get them for $2 each.
Yes, that's definitely faster than they way I was doing it. I'm goin to give it a try. Maybe I can convince Hubby to join in on the fun. Thanks for all the tips.

Found your channel a little while ago and lovin it. I always use my rotary cutter for deconstructing my shirts, but I have never torn them, this makes the process so much quicker, shall give it a try. Thankyou. I really enjoy The Catbird Quilt, she uses shirts also.

❤what a timesaver is the rotary cutter. I used Bonnie Hunters tear method but wish I had thought of the rotary cutter. Great video. If you make bags the front plackets make great handles but you would need to use seam ripper instead of scissors. I saved little scraps for my crumb quilts. I watched Beth at My Sewing Room use 8 shirts to make a quilt

Thanks for showing your technique. When I've cut up a shirt I've used scissors, but I liked how you cut 2 edges and then ripped off the fabric. I once bought a new shirt from a charity/thrift shop but liked it so much I kept it for myself and wear it when the weather is cooler haha.

I loved this video! I've got the Bonnie Hunter books and want to do a shirt quilt but first I have all of our family's old jeans that I am deconstructing. I have the charming circles template and I'm cutting the circles out of the jeans then scrapping the larger leftovers. I have 2 xlarge Ziploc big bags I'm dedicating an hour every Friday or Saturday processing. I have about 50 cut so far but not enough variety. Hopefully by the summer I'll have enough to start a good size quilt. I have scraps for the inset square. I'm going to tackle the shirt quilt after my bags of jeans are gone.

Could you shorten the time by 5 seconds bt "nicking" the side seams as you slash the inside yoke seam down?

My thrift stores charge $6.50 for a man’s shirt. I do better with yard sales, estate sales, church bargain sales. But I do often buy blankets for padding for my quilts, and check womens dresses, skirts, and lightly used sheets.
You would have done it under 5 minutes if you just did it without talking.
This freaks me out to think how much fabric you are wasting. 😢
