According to the writer's commentary, the video for "My Lovely Horse" was based on a 1975 lifestyle video for "That's What Friends are For" by The Swarbriggs, which was Ireland's entry for the 1975 Eurovision Song Contest, which they consider the funniest music video of all time.

It's a bit ironic that this episode made it out as the first of your Series 2 reactions to air, as this was originally supposed to be the first episode, and was actually written for Series 1. But as they were told they could only make 6 episodes for the first series, this one was held over for Series 2. Which is why is seems very similar in feel to Series 1. God, I'm starting to ramble on like Father Purcell now! 🙃 "Ghost Town" by The Specials being repeated on the dancefloor, and then played as the Irish National anthem cracks me up every time! 😂 Love the Spinmaster!

The Dancing Priest mentions “a younger fella who stole the idea of him.”
He’s referring to Defrocked priest Neil Horkan who decided to dance on the Loyalist Shankill Road in order to bring peace to the North of Ireland!
He also was the man who ran out in front the cars at a Formula One race and pushed over the runner who was leading the race at the Athens Olympics in 2004!

He also ruined a marathon back in 2004, by charging at the lead runner and managing to hold him back enough for the rest of the runners to overtake him.

@@Quessir It may well be purgatory. Remember the three 'death' cards dealt by the fortune teller in the opening episode. One for each priest, perhaps? Or what Bishop Brennan says to Ted in The Passion Of St Tibulus: "you are here until all of that money is paid back." There are more clues in Going To America, but I won't elaborate in case anyone reading this hasn't watched it.

    • @Quessir

@@richardfurness7556 Could be indeed. The tarot card scene depresses me because of how it lines up with Dermot Morgan. Ted draws three "death" cards. Dermot plays the character for three seasons, then dies. A hell of an unfortunate coincidence!
But yeah I do love the Purgatory idea. It absolutely fits. Ted being the (more or less) straight man trying to make sense of a world filled with the most bizarre and insane people :D

Ardal is right about FT humanizing the church when it was (and religion in general) being demonized. Father Ted was the best PR for the Catholic church (and still is). I remember the late great Norm MacDonald talking about how lazy and crappy comedians make Trump jokes because it's low hanging fruit, same with religion. There are some people who know how to satirize religion in a non spiteful, intolerant or hateful agenda driven way. Obviously Graham and Arthur from FT are on that list, South Park satirizes religion well while being respectful. That takes intelligence which is unfortunately missing from some who call themselves writers.
