Zita Swoon, an indie rock band from Belgium, initially emerged on the vibrant Antwerp music scene in 1993 as A Beatband. They gained early attention with their debut EP, "Jintro Travels The Word In A Skirt." The group is a reflection of Antwerp’s dynamic cultural landscape, known for members' involvement in multiple projects. Stef Kamil Carlens, a prominent figure in the band, co-founded it alongside Aarich Jespers and also contributed to the renowned band dEUS.
In 1995, under the name Moondog Jr., they released "Everyday I Wear A Greasy Black Feather On My Hat," which brought them significant recognition and led to performances at major European festivals like Lowlands, Pinkpop, and Rock Werchter, as well as an appearance on MTV's Most Wanted with Michael Blair. However, due to a legal issue over their name, they rebranded themselves as Zita Swoon-a name symbolizing "intense desire."
Zita Swoon's influence expanded internationally with their debut at the South by Southwest festival in the U.S. in 1998. They have since performed extensively across Europe and in the U.S., showcasing their unique sound at various prestigious venues and festivals.
The band's contributions to music and culture were officially recognized in 1999 when they received a grant from the Flemish government and were titled the Cultural Ambassador of Flanders, an honor shared with other distinguished groups like DAAU and dEUS.
In 2009, Stef Kamil Carlens innovatively participated in the Lexus Concert, a "hybrid" event blending diverse musical styles at the Klara Festival, underscoring the band’s ongoing commitment to artistic evolution and cross-genre experimentation. This event also featured a contest with the prize of an intimate concert in a new Lexus RX 450h, illustrating the band's engagement with both music and contemporary cultural promotions.
