  • Follow along as one of our educators demonstrates the blotted line technique often used by Andy Warhol in his commercial work during the 1950s. This technique combines drawing with basic printmaking and enabled Warhol to create a variety of illustrations along a similar theme.

    This is a lovely technique I had never thought of, thank you for showing it clearly & simply and for putting it up. I didn't know Andy Warhol used this method, he was such a clever man and good artist whom I have admired for decades. For those who haven't got bottles of concentrated watercolour: of course a children's paint palette of blocks of water-colours works too!

      He used it a lot as a commercial artist. He was much sought after for this "look" in his commercial work. Here's an early album cover: usercontent1.hubstatic.com/12265648.jpg

    I feel like you could easily achieve similar effect with a brush and ink. Is there any benefit from doing it this way? I don't think the result is worth the trouble of all materials used.

    • @colin72
      @colin72 Před 3 lety

      @PurpleRose7777 It's not really a benefit. Trying to do the line work on that piece of tracing paper after you've used it doesn't work so great. You have to keep tracing the original image on a new piece of tracing paper. It's not worth the bother when you can get similar line effects other ways and duplicate drawings other ways.

      I disagree. This method has elements of grunge and randomness that could be simulated with extra effort. It has inkblot energy that done right keeps the integrity of the original with an artsy vibe. Andy's method is not boring, or mainstream, and certainly not ordinary brush and ink.
