    41 years ago when we got married my husband was a water management engineer for the Saint John River. He got on the river but I never did. Great to finally see it. We got married and lived in Palatka. We loved our time there. Great video!

      Shrimp are doing really good down on Palatka right now also, but they are bigger the more north you go. I rather get less numbers but better size. This area is close to home also. Thanks for watching.

    I remember as a teenager back in the early 80’s going out at night to the end of the longest dock about 5 down from the buckman on the east side and cast netting shrimp. We’d put a chum bucket out in the late afternoon and just net from about 9 to midnight. Good memories!!!

      I grew up doing that from the old Shands Bridge. Good times because we would cook them up on the camp stove right on the old bridge.

    I appreciate your word’s about dock shrimping. Dad taught me how to shrimp off our dock in Orange Park. We did just what you described. It was seasonal, or that’s what we thought - usually mid August to lateSeptember, and in the evenings only. The net taping is something we never heard of.

    I love the mixture of content here. The wife and I are looking for a second home on the gulf coast so that we have an escape from Wyoming winters after we retire. I’m looking very hard at Florida, thanks to the wonderful outdoors content you share.

    I was stationed at NAS Jacksonville in 1970 for Navy school , and use to fish on a fork of the St. John's river that went through the base, every weekend.........great fishing on that river (brackish water, but who cared)..............miss the fishing in Florida, a wonderland of great species.................

    You mix it up a little about shrimps, they don't spawn in a river they feed in it and move out in Atlantic ocean to spawn and return to tributaries to feed

    This is great. I'm considering a move to the SJR area. I knew the fishing and crabbing were good, but didn't know there was shrimping, too.

      Hey Shane. An annual event here. Some years better than others. I hard work, but can be fun when they are running.

  • @ReneeRichterthisonesforyou99

    So I feel like a real idiot. I showed my husband the video and said " I never saw the river" and he looked at me weird and said "We lived on River Street and the river was just across the road from our apartment!" Well, in my defense it was 40 years ago!

  • @genericalfishtycoon3853

    Hey, I tried letting people know in live chat that you couldn't access the link, because subscription feed says you're still waiting to go live. (Because it's totally broken these days.) I let them know you already did the stream, Some people were still hanging around waiting. Nice spin on that net throw btw. 👍 Sweet catch.

    What area is best for shrimp in April/ May? I’ll mostly be using them for bait. Shore and dock, no boat yet

    • @BackwoodsGourmetChannel
      @BackwoodsGourmetChannel  Před 2 lety +1

      Here, the season is closed for May. June. July because the adult shrimp are coming into the river to spawn. Other areas will have different regs. The big ones are out there but we can't harvest.

    • @BackwoodsGourmetChannel
      @BackwoodsGourmetChannel  Před 3 lety

      They are starting up right now. You have to be in just the right spot to get any. Most of the ledges have some decent size ones. Just posted a new video on shrimping.

    Do i look for a grass bottom. And about how deep

    • @BackwoodsGourmetChannel
      @BackwoodsGourmetChannel  Před 4 lety +1

      Sand bottom near drop offs. I start around 9-10 feet and work my way deeper until I figure out what depth they are using. The other day they were thick in 20 feet but it was to hard to get your net all the way to the bottom due to current.

    Do you need a license to catch shrimp on the St. John’s River?
