During the WW2, China suffered massive casualties (20 million), second only to the Soviet Union (26 million). For comparison, Germany lost 3 million, UK 450,000, and USA 420,000.
During the war, China didn't have an advanced military and was at the mercy of its enemy. Therefore, you can't blame the Chinese for developing a strong military now. They want to protect their people, just like any other nations.
Yeah China got the Japanese Imperial Army with the help of American troops. Look up Flying Tigers to get glimpse of what the USA did for the Nationalist Chinese. Right after the war, the communists took on the Nationalists, forcing them out and into modern day Taiwan, and then took over the country, making China a communist country. They may want to have a lot of weapons, but not because they fought Imperial Japan (Nationalists did that, not the Communists) but because they want to take control of most of Asia.

American here, I have much respect for China and their people. I wish our country's could unite, in any form. I always look at the Chinese as well disciplined, loyal, humble people. It takes a lot of studying of history to realise the full picture of Chinese military and their perspective. I stumbled upon this when reading and contemplated why it is called 'People's Liberation Army'. After all, before I learned the history behind it, I was under the impression that the Communist Party won a civil war and rose to power, so to what extent is it 'liberation', and if it was a revolution, what regime was being overthrown?
Thus I learned, that China probably suffered more than any other country in the last 200 years of modern history, starting from the opium-wars, it has been targeted by western powers repeatedly, peeling off territories, economic goods (like silver and tea), antiques and artworks and each and every time due to the technological differences, it was a one-sided defeat by definition. Fighting guns and cannons with swords and machetes, fighting steam powered steel ships with wooden frigates, and fighting well trained soldiers and mercenaries with opium addicted local militia. And then World Wars came, inflicting tens of millions of casualties and the government self proclaimed to be in control, was a US puppet, supported with arms and funding.
The communist rose in this time, fought off the Japanese, the US puppet government and has been fighting against external influence around its border ever since. I never realised how close China came to being dissolved, from just ending as a country all together. Yet whatever the Western Strategy of division that worked on Korea, on Vietnam, on the Middle East, on India and caused internal strife to no end, did not work on China. Somehow the Chinese managed to remain a single nation, and their unity persists and is probably the key to their strength. When I learned all of this, I realised, the 'Liberation Army' is just this: Submission to no gods, no masters and China must remain its own independent sovereignty.
The Chinese military is suspicious and defensive, I think from a justifiable fear of all that was suffered in history and the fear of it repeating. Peace and security must be a drop of rain on a barren desert for these people and they wanted to keep it that way.

As a proud American patriot, I realize the PRC is our primary geopolitical rival but I respect the message behind this recruitment video.

Why the Americans? The US only guards against the risk of Chinese agression against Taiwan. As long as the communist party behaves, that's not going to be an issue.

So...I live in Mongolia. Which is neighbouring country of China. (My country is located between both China and Russia.) The most impactful thing that I took from this video is the aspect of being human and having a family of loved ones...even in war we're all still fighting for those we love and want to protect.
