I love how the animation community came to the conclusion that Hermes has an ever-present pair of shades.
It also reeeally jives with the 80s-nostalgia Synthwave theme of this song.
In a modern-setting story you'd expect this melody for some scene in an 80s car driving towards a purple and pinkish sky during sunset, palm trees, street lights and beaches flying by, intercut with shots of the protag at the wheel wearing such shades.
Pretty sure his voice actor put on shades for the first part of this song

NO JOKE THOUGH my 5th grade class's play was a musical compilation of Greek myths, and our Hermes was, in fact, on roller blades with foam wings attached to the ankles (this was the 90s so yes they were full skates and not heelies)
We NEED Jay to hear about this. This seems like a critical addition that needs to be a feature.
i like the idea Hermes made the tiny boat travel fast when the beat drop. Hermes is god of travel and his blessing is probably the one blessing odyseuss reallly needs the most, and is probably the only reason he's alive.
i know Hermes helped twice but considering Hermes is god of travellers and hospitality, thievery and cunning, heralds and diplomacy, on top of a messenger of the gods and a psychopomp, Odyseuss's life clearly far more suited to be under Hermes' patronage. i suppose the fact that Hermes is Odyseuss's granpa made it redundant and well, as a warrior, a favor of a war goddess is much more preferable.

He is also Odysseus's great grandpa, so there's some more incentive to help him out.
I just read this comment again, and I just thought about it. Literally, what Odysseus wants desperately is to go home to his wife and son.... and what better way to start his positive path back to it with a piece of home? Hermes, the best travel companion to him now with all that has happened and is part of his family to lead him home. Still rocking to this song as I was thinking it over xD

It’s funnier when you remember that Hermes was Odysseus’ great grandfather
One of the things I adore is the differences between Athena and Hermes.
Athena is a strict teacher and Odysseus was one of her first serious students that she invested in. She accepts nothing but the very best, expects wisdom no matter what, and doesn't allow for mistakes. That said, every intervention of hers was directly helpful and meant to help Odysseus along, often stepping in between gods when she did so.
But when she leaves, Odysseus isn't alone because cool grampa Hermes has Odysseus' back. He's not trying to teach, he's not trying to mentor, he's nothing but supportive and EVERY action he takes is to even out the odds Odysseus faces.
And the WEIRD thing is, in the musical I get the sense that Odysseus wanted the opposite to happen. He wanted Athena to be cool aunt friend, and he reacts perfectly to Hermes trickster-mentor tendencies.
Also honestly even if they weren't related, Hermes is the god of travellers and man Odysseus travels a lot
The reason Odysseus reacted that way to the gods, is probably because of their dynamics. Athena helps him in battle, so he treats her like he does a fellow soldier because that's what he's used to. Hermes is his great grandfather and gives him assistance only in his most desperate times of need. He's a trickster too, which makes it hard to really become close to him as his intentions are never really clear.😅😅
The fact that he’s (probably) got no idea that Hermies is his grandfather is so funny cuz he’s so confused on why this random god keeps helping him & Hermies is just living for how confused he is and therefore never bothers to tell him. 😂

1:00 You can really feel the grandson-grandparent bond in this scene. Like it has that feeling that Hermes(even tho it’s kinda his entire personality) is trying to be jazzy to smooth it down and kind of cheer Odysseus up and he’s like “Okay fine. I’m sold.” And when Odysseus agrees Hermes has that face that’s like “O MY GOSH I KNEW IT I’M THE COOLEST GRANDPA EVER” Definitely one of my favorite god-hero interactions in the entire musical.

I liked that Hermes gave Odysseus a choice. Most Greek gods would just say 'This is what I want you to do.' Expect the mortal to comply and they start inflicting divine retribution if they didn't.
But Hermes lays it out like; 'this will get you home to your wife and son, but it's really dangerous, what do you want to do?'

Fun Mythology fact: Odysseus is actually Hermes's great-grandson. Odysseus grandfather was Autolycus, a son of Hermes, a thief and trickster who could shapeshift.
But Odysseus has no abilities, despite his great-grandfather in the form of the god of messages
@user-oi1os8zj1f you would surprised by how many demigods (who were direct children of gods) had no actual powers, a major example was Helen of Troy who was the daughter of Zeus and had no powers at all (don't let Percy Jackson fool you, demigods getting powers was rare, and most often you got the lamest powers, like being a child of Poseidon would just make it so that you were really good at horseback riding)
That... makes a lot of sense where Sisyphus's immense skill at fucking with Hades comes from now... (Sisyphus in some versions is Odysseus's father)
The guy from the 90s Herculese/Xena series? He was pretty rad! I don't think he could shapeshift in the universe of those shows though.

The fluidity of Hermes’ movements really shows his character- laid back relaxed and super chill. He’s like that one fun uncle Yk? Athena’s movements on the other hand are more calculated and regal in a way. Lol just saw the differences and felt like commenting about it I could do a full fletched analysis but I’m too lazy

One thing that's been on my mind every time I listen to this song. Hermes is fast because he's a messenger for the Gods, Goddesses, and Demigods. I always wonder if he can just pick Odysseus up on his back and carry him back home. But then again, the omnipotent beings can't interfere with a person's fate or lifestyle and watch for the outcome (or simply didn't want to get involved). Or the gods were still punishing/ cursing him like Poseidon. Plus, Hermes probably didn't want to piss off any uncles or aunts of his aiding Odysseus. Amazing animation!!
Hermes is also Odysseus's great grandfather, so he could easily just be like, "Ah, ah, ah, don't you dare touch my great grandson!"

I’ve watched this so many times and every time I hear and see Hermes’s silly little laugh at the beginning I just smile. Because its just so fitting that he has an absolutely dorky little laugh like that.

Well- it's not as bad as you think it is, the Greek gods are pretty messed up when it comes to relationships, Zeus married his sister and even slept with his grandson's wife. So don't feel strange, although what you mention is indeed pretty strange.

I love this so much. I’ve looped it so many times. Your character designs are so good, especially Hermes with his sunglasses and general vibe. My favorite part is when he waits for the beat to drop and then the perspective changes and the boat starts going faster- so good. And the twirl he does with his staff is so cool! It’s very satisfying to watch

The building retrowave evokes this feeling of sitting down at an arcade and the start of one of those racing games. And thats exactly what Hermes is setting up, Odysseus's final race home and to the gods its all a game.
