What a beauty of a PSU.

That site's an absolute goldmine, but you'll get lost in old magazines for hours there.

Probably a wise idea replacing that mains lead, the old PVC cables (particularly the green earth conductor) have a habit of breaking down and leaching corrosive goo!

I have just landed one of these in a house clearance. Still need to test it though. I repair the odd tube amplifier, but can't think of what I might use 5kv for. Might be worth swapping out for some more modern parts and making it a 600-700v tube amplifier test psu?

They don't make 'em like that anymore!
You can't plug in something 20 years old without capacitors exploding!
    (Or maybe it's just me?)

When I was digging around for info I found that two vintage components have a propensity for failing: visconol caps (with a bang) and SenTerCel stick rectifiers (just go high resistance and virtually impossible to test at low voltage due to the high forward drop), hence it being tested outside in the middle of the garden.

Would you be willing to do a tear down of an Amazon product for me? Im no electronic expert or anything but I find it fascinating. I found a listing for 15W charger plug adapters on Amazon and saw the top review was a melted one. I want to know if it was the mechanism or operator error but I'm not willing to risk my house and I'm not smart enough to know what I'm looking at if I opened one up lol I could message you the screenshots if you like and you can check it out if you like? No worries if you're too busy

The only operator error that should cause that would be putting it in a fire.
I've got a bit of a backlog, you could try asking @bigclivedotcom though.
