    As the river formed after the water retreated, it ate at the shelf OP is walking on, eventually the weight of the unsupported line found a natural weakness in the rock and pop goes the weasel. Could be tomorrow, could be in 100 years, but it will fall. Well, in theory, considering the Colorado river is in deep skittles, with water levels being lower and lower, i expect Green river to be in the same bottle, meaning erosion would craw to a halt if trends hold.
    It's extremely well visible in google maps, giant chunk right at a bend.

      Geology.

    • @aserta
      @aserta Před 2 lety +3

      There's a cave underneath. In very simplistic terms, this was deposited over time, layer after layer, then at some point, water started left and made a river (to the right) said river ate at the rock below, and without support it broke along a fault line. Kinda like what's happening with glaciers now, where warmer water is eating the base, leaving the tops unsupported, forming cracks that run along lines as long as a large US state.
      You can do the same at home, for fun, using a glazed layer cake. At the base, use a spoon to eat the first layers, going in. As you do, it will eventually break and fall on the plate.
