I thought Animals album is mostly written by Roger Waters and my opinion is that the acoustic rhythmic guitar comes from Waters. Gilmour is the genius behind the electric guitar parts.
arguably their best album but id say meddle is more underrated. saw roger live this summer and he does pigs 3 different ones and it is literally an entertainment masterpiece i'd say its my one of the best but its part of that floyd era when you really have to listen to the whole album
Even more so would be Obscured By Clouds. It's a wonderful post-Meddle, precursor to Dark Side. It's hardly mentioned in any books or documentaries. It's probably my favorite Floyd album and I highly recommend it.
The only thing I like as much as the music of this masterpiece would have to be the lyrics of this masterpiece. Note for note, syllable by syllable their most powerful expression of humanity, desperation, vengeance and deceit. James, very nice work!
Thank you for this - you have changed my life showing these different open tunings and voicings! The fact that I can now play this is almost unimaginable... This song and chord changes have always been a crazy enigma to me - until now! Thanks again James - you got me rocking' here in Aspen Colorado!
agreed.. I've only been playing for 6 7 years.. started at 48..shouidve practiced more.. but can play this song one of my all time favorites.. and that my friend is worth it
Absolutely fantastic! You're blowing my mind man. This has been my favourite Pink Floyd album since I was a teen-ager doing hot knives of hash with the headphones on. But back then, all my sorry-ass was ever focused on, was Gilmour's electric guitar parts. You've opened my ears to the supporting rhythm guitar he plays behind that stuff. I'll be honest with you, I'll never really try and play this becasue I have a back-log of stuff I want to learn. But thanks, I'm gonna listen to Dogs again.
I covet that Dove. Lot of parts to this song. My memory just sucks. I can play all kinds of things but can’t remember anything. I don’t know you do it. Great lesson. Many thanks.
Thank you James James. You played (and sang) this song beautifully. I don't know how you figured out the chords or the strumming or the down-tuning, but it all sounds true to the original DOGS.
Think of it as, "Dragged down by the cinder block chained to your leg...", and it should coalesce in your mind fairly quickly... (as you beg, "PLEASE, TONY! NOT IN THE FACE!!")
The weight of all you’ve done dragging you down, for a dog’s life is built on lies and manipulating people. The song and specifically that line is about how the dog’s greed and cowardice drags it down in the end, leaving them empty and alone.
Question: You're not actually palm-muting any of the strums - you just lift your left hand fingers and block the open strings on the percussive strums, right?
Is the Guitar Tuned Down, a Half-Step, or Whole Step? Brit Floyd, does a Phenomenal Performance of this!! And, he plays the Acoustic Part, EXACTLY this Way. Thanks!!
You don’t have to know how far it’s tuned down. Just tune your low E string to what you hear on mine. Then tune the rest of the strings from there. Use your ears, not a tuner.
Thanks. I'll tune whole step down. To" D". Seems right to me. If we do what you say then the rest of band is not in tune to guitar. Imagine keys trying to 1/4 step. I can't.
i used to have a dove. it had this metal bridge that you could adjust. it gave the guitar a horid bright sound. i should have changed it not sell. probably worth a fortune now.
why do you micro-adjust your fretting fingers when you're playing the intro? like you're removing pressure from the strings for an instant. im new to guitar so i'm not really sure if there's a name for that, maybe it's just slight muting, idk. definitely changes the sound and everyone that plays the intro does it though.
James James I’ve seen some guitarists palm mute or slap instead of going for the staccato effect. I use your way also, I think it sounds better. Just took a day or two to get that high e to ring out on the second and fourth bar of the last two chords of the intro. Took me a bit to get used to turning my index finger to the side to hit it right. Thanks, great work on this. Very helpful!
I don’t know and it doesn’t matter. Just tune your low E to what I play at the beginning and then tune the rest of the strings from there. Use your ears, not a tuner.
@@jamesjames9275 cheers i and many of my music buddies are very grateful for your contributions, particularly the America songs of the first album😀greeting from Western Australia!
It's pretty simple. Tune your low E to that first chord, then tune everything else at regular intervals. It's standard tuning, but a little lower. You don't have to know how much lower, just tune to what you hear.
I am so glad to hear that. I’m good thank you! Why no videos, I’ve been watching you for like a decade. Your videos are my favorite! I see it’s been a year since your last one.
I absolutely love the acoustic 4 chord opening to this song. Gilmour is a genius.
I thought Animals album is mostly written by Roger Waters and my opinion is that the acoustic rhythmic guitar comes from Waters. Gilmour is the genius behind the electric guitar parts.
Actually Gilmour is credited to the acoustic guitar on this track.
@@laytonn1160 no way.. waters literally plays it live. he wrote it
Dave wrote the music.
Dogs is the only Gilmore tune
My favorite song from my favorite Floyd album
My favorite tune from my favorite Floyd album! (^^;👍
Animals is probably the most underrated Floyd release. Good stuff James, keep it up

@JoPa GeRi Melt? Do you mean Meddle or More?
Melt indeed.
probably the best Floyd release

One of my favorite guitar strumming songs... Such a great tune! Thanks for sharing man.
Your best post yet. Dogs is one of the best songs written in the last 50 years in my opinion. Gilmour and Waters were never better than this.
Totally agree!
100% agreed @rubicon1983, phenomenal chord progression, guitar and lyrics, one of the greatest songs ever
Agreed. Gilmour’s best guitar work is here, as a piece. Astonishing. Legendary guitarist at his peak.
Thank you for this - you have changed my life showing these different open tunings and voicings! The fact that I can now play this is almost unimaginable...

That is some powerful strumming - and some good chords. Sounds great.
youve nailed this, a great song with beautiful chords , really well done .
One of my favorite Floyd tunes, incredible sound landscapes, the intro is funky and menacing and contains some weird soloing. Thanx!
Best Floyd album ever!!!

Thank you ❤. The greatest song ever! You have given me a gift with this one.
Animals was awesome
You’re the man. Love your videos.
James James....Remember that time you did a lesson on Dogs? That was AWESOME!
You just blew my mind! Thank you so much for showing me that xo
Well done, its one of my favorite Floyd tunes to jam on acoustic. And like most other Floyd tunes...lots of tasteful soloing by Gilmour.
J J you are the Animal ! Super Thank you !
Thank you for including the chords for my favorite part of the song (the whole song is a masterpiece) "Who was born in a house..."
Dude I've been trying to find a decent lesson for this forever. Thank you man
Good job, one of the best floyd’s tune
Lovin the playing, keep em comin many thanks L. B.
Just found your channel, I always wondered how to correctly play this. Love your channel image too \m/!
Thank you James! As an owner of two German Shepherd dogs, I concur ; )
Very cool!
Quite a surprise to see that one pop up!
Fantastic Lesson JJ
I covet that Dove. Lot of parts to this song. My memory just sucks. I can play all kinds of things but can’t remember anything. I don’t know you do it. Great lesson. Many thanks.
Thanks for the lesson. Very helpful!!!
Beautiful Gibson you have there. I bet it sounds rich and deep!
Thank you James James. You played (and sang) this song beautifully. I don't know how you figured out the chords or the strumming or the down-tuning, but it all sounds true to the original DOGS.
Well done man. Thank you!
Loved that
Great lesson video, thanks for making this video!!
sweet....I heard the dogs barking
Awesome , good job
Nice...I love animals
That's a brilliant rythm.

Awesome!
Thank you!
Damn! You're ambitious. Mountain Jam next? 😜

Relived to see this under James James. The PT lesson has no audio anymore!
Love me some DOGS 🐕!!
My first album I bought in 72 was Ummagumma.
Thank you
Thanks!!!
oh my gosh thank uuuu
Rare!! would have never expected you to do Dogs. What's next Barrett stuff?
Brilliant, and very helpful. Thanks. 🎸
Top!
yay and thanky...that wack first chord also starts Hole's Malibu which is slightly (but not terribly) bizarre
Wanna discuss what “dragged down by the stone” might mean???
Love this song and your vids..
Thank you
Curious , what do you think " dragged down by the stone " means .. always wondered myself .
I've got my own ideas though ....
Think of it as, "Dragged down by the cinder block chained to your leg...", and it should coalesce in your mind fairly quickly... (as you beg, "PLEASE, TONY! NOT IN THE FACE!!")
“The bad blood slows and turns to stone”
The weight of all you’ve done dragging you down, for a dog’s life is built on lies and manipulating people. The song and specifically that line is about how the dog’s greed and cowardice drags it down in the end, leaving them empty and alone.
Question: You're not actually palm-muting any of the strums - you just lift your left hand fingers and block the open strings on the percussive strums, right?
You missed the last part of the song where the lyric line " dragged down by the stone" Ab to A to F to Em7 to Dm9
Hi! Thank you for sharing this masterpiece cover.
What's the tuning you're using?
Cool chords

what is the number of nail you use? thanks!
Sorry, I don't understand.

there are actually two acoustic guitars. i think one is tuned down as you say not sure about the other one.
Both are tuned down.
did you tune down to Eb or a full step to D?
PS This lesson is great, thank you.
Full step down to D.
What would u say the best Floyd albums is?
Wish You Were Here and Animals are great, but I like Dark Side because that was before it became Roger's band.
Piper. Full stop.
You live in Rochester ny?
A long time ago.
Well, done Nigel. Does your guitar go to 11 as well?
Only the acoustics.
What is the chord on 6:50? I can't play it😥
That's a B.
Is this down a half step?
It's down, but I don't know how far down.
I've always played it one step below, but listen and see what you think
It is tuned down a whole step to D.
1:20 atrum practice comment for my self to use i cant figure out this fuckin strum pattern lol

You have to do that to get the staccato effect. You have to get the strings to stop ringing between the strums.

George Ambrose d standard
Where are you, James James? Hope your okay! Let me know, please!!!
I’m just fine. I hope you are, too.
I am so glad to hear that. I’m good thank you! Why no videos, I’ve been watching you for like a decade. Your videos are my favorite! I see it’s been a year since your last one.
what about the section "but its too late to loose the weight you used to need to throw around?"
The acoustic drops out in that section, but you’d just vamp on that same E minor sequence that comes before it.
Ace
Nice shirt. Is that a garbage plate stain on it. 🤔
And after a while, you can work on points for style....
Like a club tie, a firm handshake, a certain look in the eye and an easy smile.
nails = spikes size example : 0.45 mm
Oh, I just use mediums for the most part on acoustic.
Para enseñar asi mejor no enseñes nada.
Thank you
